Recently saw Good Will Hunting (1997), felt a little too cliche

What threw me off this film was the dialogue. I greatly feel that the film could have been improved with a more natural sounding script instead of the one-dimensional and unnatural conversations that they have. Don’t get me wrong, Sean's speech on love and how will was just a child was touching, but the film could have hinged itself on its subtext instead of having the characters emphasize what was already established through the subtext itself. Having Sean explain Will's habit of pushing people away before people could push him told me that the writers couldn’t trust the viewers to understand the message themselves. Moreover, when displaying Will's intellect, some of the scenes felt straight out of a Marvel film where the main character is offensively praised and glamorized (like the opening scene where he fends off the hecklers).

Which is also what leads me to be unsatisfied about Will's revelation at the end and his closure with Sean. Will was finally seen as a person rather than a patient to be diagnosed, and found some solace in his trauma. But it felt contrived, sort of over-the-top and cheesy, a penultimate scene that every film contains to bring out a few tears.

I can understand the praise surrounding good will hunting but it felt formulaic and too easy to understand. I like There Will Be Blood, due to its slow build up of daniels character and the uncertainty in whether to praise or condemn him. From the beginning of the film, it was quite obvious that Will's character arc was going to be one of overcoming an obstacle and reaching closure. And I'm not the biggest fan of clichés that are further bolstered by overused film tropes.

Dang! by netflix releases September 8th

as an asian american, i can't help but agree with the vitriol surrounding the release of the show, and after watching the trailer my suspicions were further bolstered by the vibe that this was written by some millennial asian american women who loves to shit on white people. it just feels like a bojack horseman rip off, and a heavy emphasis on the asian american experience, without any good writing.

huge binge.. any advice?

so this morning i went on a trip to costco with my parents, and i got all my essentials for the cut and was looking forward to leaving until we hit the luxurious food court afterwards. now i have had DREAMS of that goddam hotdog for weeks now and i gave in and ate a bunch... but it didn't end there because afterwards i came home and demolished the fridge and ate ice cream, chips, ramen - you name it.

now i'm in bed extremely full and i'm kind of disappointed because i was making so much progress. i was 5 pounds away from my goal weight and now i kind of stunted my cut. i love the feeling of consistency and i feel like this is gonna make me spiral even further

Losing weight on lexapro

So i've been taking Lexapro for a few weeks now, and aside from loss of libido, the other main side effect is an increase of appetite due to the targeted serotonin receptors. Now i'm not sure if it's because im cutting or if it's the SSRI, but i'm so goddam hungry all the time. I eat around 1500-1800 calories a day and managed to lose 10lbs, but these past few days of cutting have been hell.

Has anyone else successfully managed to lose weight and stay lean on anti-depressants? If so how?

Any pull up programs to help me get out of the 3-5 pull up range?

So I can do about 5-7 pull ups right now and i do about 30 pull ups everyday, 6 days a week (6 sets of x5 at the gym). I try to grease the groove every now and then and do some pull ups every time I walk past my bar at home. So in total it's around 35-40 pull ups a day.

However, i'm looking up programs like the russian fighter pull up and it suggests I start off with my max and then dwindle the amount, whilst other programs like GTG i can't really conform to because it's annoying to do pull ups all throughout the day, and i'd much rather do it in one set. Furthermore, the russian fighter program doesn't really allow me to do to many pull ups and i'm plannning to progress faster. So i was wondering if there are any programs to increase my max pull up range, while offering higher training volume or a faster rate of progression. For reference, my current max is 7 strict pull-ups.

Lexapro works so well for me! (20M)

My whole life I had always neglected my mental health and assumed that i could push through with pure will power, but it had recently gotten so bad to the point where i went days without eating meals, couldn't get out of bed, and overall just wanting to die. I finally got prescribed lexapro and started off with 10mg for 7 days and then 20mg.

It's been an absolute life saver for me. I don't ruminate as much, and i don't experience any panic attacks either. I'm working out every day, brushing my teeth, even looking for a part time job and my life is starting to get back on track. So glad I took the leap. I know meds aren't for everyone, but lexapro has done wonders for me. It's not a happy pill necessarily, and I still struggle with some aspects of my mental health but i can't imagine myself living without it

weird social behaviours from a hyper religious childhood

i had a monitored screen time of 2 hours on weekends which lasted till i was like 15. didn't have any gaming consoles or anything, and didn't even listen to music till i was 15, just had the family computer

so naturally, when me and my friends would talk at school and the topic shifted to whatever video game/movie/youtubers we were into, i started to panic cause i literally had no clue about the topic at hand. so i had to pretend that i knew what i was talking about from eaves dropping on other people and gaining knowledge from just listening around. it was literally a game of not letting them know i was being sheltered at home lol. i would even brag to other kids that i was able to watch a movie on the weekends to signal that i'm normal, not knowing it was a normal activity, but for me it was a once in a moon typa thing

what's worse was when they kept asking me why i was never on call with them afterschool, and i had to avoid the question. and the boredom inside the house aswell. i was the king of larping lol

do you remember traumatic events in your early 20's?

so, i'm 20 years old and just went through an event where i made a bunch of mistakes and without giving too much detail away, this is definitely one of the most humiliating and self-esteem destroying thing i have ever done. i don't really have much going for me right now besides being in nursing school, no friends or social life and cptsd from my upbringing and i just started ssri's. will i remember this 5 or 10 years down in the future? will it be just a funny memory?

i don't think i'll ever beat my depression which is a very sad thought to have

the fact that i will live this this pit in my chest for the next 50 years.. there have been moments of happiness in my life, but it is ever so fleeting. moreover, my upbringing was a literal hellhole and my teenage years weren't better either. i'm just now entering adulthood completely alone, still in the home i grew up in, with people i resent. i fear that even if i do build a good life for myself, which i highly doubt, i will ruin it as i have failed every relationship for the past 20 years of my life, all for different reasons. regret consumes me. i had so much potential and could have built an amazing life for myself but i couldn't live up to anyone's expectations. is it my destiny to be a worthless, joke of a human being?

Correlations between Nen and Personality

So i think it's clear that one's nen ability has a direct correlation to the personality of it's user, and while some are glaringly one dimensional (like bisky and her obsession with beauty, Leorio's power to break cancerous tumors in the medical field etc.), while others have me quite confused. Either way, I tried my best to draw some connections:

Kurapika is consumed by revenge, and chained by his own malice. He wants to take the spiders down and chain them down to hell, but doesn't realize that doing so is what causes him to suffer.

"Rock, paper, scissors" is used worldwide by children to settle disputes, and Gon has a childish and curious nature. Gon is still a child for the entirety of the series, and his journey to becoming a man is displayed, but as all of us do in the pursuit of maturity, or rather life itself, is make mistakes. I don't think he's a psychopath like people say he is, but we struggle between right and wrong as children, and can sometimes latch onto some dark feelings and lack the emotional clarity to break away from it.

Illumi's nen ability to manipulate is fitting, as he's always controlling Killua. And he's a manipulator nen type.

Hisoka has affinity to power and clings/sticks to anyone with such.

I think netero is an interesting case, because the chimera ant arc reveals him to be a vile and dark human being, opposed to the pacifistic person they once painted him as. For one, he's not willing to communicate with meruem and chooses to fight, willingly admitted that he's going to hell (from someone who prayed his whole life), wears a lucky shirt which is a fallacy to religion and the rose was sort of a dishonorable path.

Buddhism is grounded in pacifism and preaches ahimsa (non harm) yet, he is using buddah to harm meruem. Moreover, he prays instantaneously before he attacks, when prayer is inherently used as a form on introspection and not to cause harm. His nen ability just affirms the guise he wears, in order to conceal his authentic self.

Anyway, that's my best interpretation. Anything you agree/disagree on?

Meaning within time distortion in the chimera ant arc

so comparisons between meruem and gon have been milked to death, and people tend to simplify it by putting the two characters on both ends of the moral scale (one gained his humanity while the other lost his etc.), but i wanted to add my stray observation because i think there's more nuance to the writing

Time distortion is a huge aspect of this arc, from the advanced aging speed of welfin and knov, to gon's adult transformation and most importantly, how chimera ants are forced out of the womb knowing who they are and what role they need to conform to. This is a direct antithesis to the human experience, as one develops their sense of self through experiencing suffering, failure, and life as a whole. But instead, ants are fully nurtured coming out of the womb, especially meruem who has been fed a plethora of humans who have experienced life and developed identifies.

However, this ultimately makes him empty, as life becomes nothing but a simulation for him, a predetermined path with no room for freedom. It's as if he is playing his 100th run through a video game, with cheat codes that guarantee victory. The only time we see meruem truly happy (in my opinion) is when this identity is broken down and his time becomes finite. While his status of "king" is broken and he failed at securing his goal, meruem comes to the understanding that what makes the human experience valuable is it's unpredictability, and finite lifespan.

Gon however, goes down the opposite path and embraces the chimera ant nature. He cheated his way through time in order to gain power and instead of expierncing life to develop such strength in the past like his training with bisky, meeting friends through training etc, he gains it within 30 seconds out of pure rage. His victory renders him empty, akin to meruem, as he adopted the chimera ant worldview, that brute strength is the strongest form of strength and abandoned the journey and connections made to achieve strength, which is what makes it truly valuable.

how to get over self disgust?

how does one get over this? okay this is such a incoherent rant but like i look back at my life and can't help but feel a total mix of feelings - regret, shame, humiliation, anger, disgust, cringe... i haven't done any heinous shit per se, and hearing other peoples stories do offer me solace in making me feel that i am not alone in this but i just hate the human experience. i hate my failures, they aren't beautiful and can't be fit into a singular category, like having an absent father or being addicted to drugs, i truly wish it was that linear but there are so many mixed factors that go into it being so traumatic

my life actually went pretty well these past couple of months. i gained some stability and felt normal- went on a long streak of not doing something dumb and felt that i at last achieved normalcy, but then i made a minor mistake and now my dumb brain is just ocd hyper obsessed with it. that mistake has also led me to examine my past which i buried in the back of my mind and now it's come back to haunt me. i fear that, when i do get over this phase of my life i'll make another mistake and have to be confronted with my life again. there's no running from it and i'm too much of a coward to overcome it. my stomach's in a knot. helppp
