Today might be more of a museum type of day (map of free museum hours)

It’s been quite hot lately, so indoor plans might be the way to go. If you’re interested in museums, I’ve been putting together a map of free things to do around NYC, including free museum hours (if you have any other museums in mind that have free hours or notice something seems off, please submit it or report it). Sharing in case it helps anyone find something fun to do without melting outside: https://whatsfree.nyc/?cat=museums

Staten Island’s map is getting fuller of free events

Big thanks to everyone sharing sources of free events. The Staten Island section is a lot fuller now, so I wanted to post an updated view of what’s free out there! There's quite a lot going on actually. whatsfree.nyc

Finding free local events in Williasmburg

Does anyone have recommendations for Wiliamsburg-specific event sources, newsletters, community calendars, or social media accounts?

I'm trying to find more local events. I live in LIC and love visiting Williasmburg!

I've been collecting event sources for a personal project that tracks free events around NYC by time, and I'd love to add more Williasmburg coverage, especially on weekdays! If you're interested in the map, let me know through commenting!

Free events across NYC on a map (filtered by time)

I love finding free things to do around the city, but I've always found event sites kind of frustrating. Everything is buried in giant lists, and it's hard to tell what's actually happening near you.

So I started putting free in-person events on a map for myself...things like street fairs, museum events, festivals, outdoor movies, etc. Being able to see everything by location and time has honestly made it a lot easier to find things to do on a random afternoon or after work.

Figured I'd share it here in case anyone else has the same problem. Would love any feedback or ideas for event sources I'm missing.

Sources for free events/things to do

Does anyone have recommendations for Staten Island-specific event sources, newsletters, community calendars, or social media accounts?

I'm trying to find more local events and have realized most of the sources I follow are concentrated in the other boroughs. Staten Island is definitely my weakest area.

I've been collecting event sources for a personal project that tracks free events around NYC (whatsfree.nyc), and I'd love to add more Staten Island coverage. Right now, I get Movies under the Star mostly and that's it...Any recommendations would be appreciated.

Finding free events in Greenpoint

I’m a huge fan of finding free things to do around the neighborhood and the rest of the city (I live in LIC) but it's really annoying because the sites out there are often in list views or hard to navigate.

I’ve actually been working on a personal project to map out these events so I can see what’s happening nearby in real-time, especially for evening plans. It’s been a fun way to keep track of things like pop-up events and local neighborhood activities, like Astoria Carnival.

Does anyone have any sources or local newsletters you follow for Greenpoint-specific events? I’m always looking to add more sources to my map so I can keep it updated with the best local leads.

The map: whatsfreenyc.com It has a lot of events for the rest of the city!

Finding free events in LIC and rest of NYC (filtered by time)

I’m a huge fan of finding free things to do around the neighborhood (I live in LIC) and across the city but it's really annoying because the sites out there are often in list views or hard to navigate.

So, I ended up building a tool for myself that maps out free events (e.g. Culture Lab LIC, LIC Springs, Astoria Carnival, museums) across the city by time. You can filter by the time you’re free, so if you’re looking for something to do after 5pm, you can see exactly what’s happening nearby!

It’s not perfect since it's just me working on it. If you see any issues with events or want me to add events, please let me know here or through the website! Feature requests will be considered too. Let's save money and have fun!

Finding free events across NYC (filtered by time)

I’m a huge fan of finding free things to do across the city but it's really annoying because the sites out there are often in list views or hard to navigate.

I finally got fed up with it and threw together a simple map for myself to see what’s going on based on my own schedule. It lets me filter by the time I’m actually free (e.g. like if I want to find a museum or a show for this afternoon) instead of looking at a giant wall of text.

It is definitely not a polished commercial site, just a side project I’ve been tinkering with. But it’s made my weekends way easier, so I figured I’d share it in case anyone else is tired of the same old event lists and wants to save a little cash while exploring. Let's save money and have fun!
