[Preview] Up to 4 Player Xbox Co-Op over FaceTime SharePlay on Midori

Hi,

Here's a snippet of 2 friends and myself playing Marvel Cosmic Invasion via SharePlay over FaceTime using only one Xbox! (or xcloud session)

Latency's great, and supports up to 4 players local via Remote Play and Cloud gaming

Cloud games are more limited in game selection due to not having the ability to sign-in multiple accounts in a cloud session.

Coming with Midori version 1.0.4.

Thanks,

/v

P.S. This is all zero setup btw, all devices just need the app to be installed.

[Sunday Report] Edition 24, Week 34: Expect the Unexpected

Hi,

Well that was unexpected 👀

....

....

Humbled.

....

....

Working on Asobi has been quite eventful in the last year or so, but I did not expect this to happen. To think that one simple green button saying "Release to public" could have so much impact.

I was still writing last week's Sunday Report when it started. First the PlayTest getting picked up by outlets like Polygon, Eurogamer, Tom's Hardware, T3 and Push Square. Then opening YouTube to a thumbnail of my own Steam build. Then a Twitter timeline that wouldn't stop. And somewhere in all of that, seeing Asobi turn up on the Steam Machine of the most honoured Yoshida-san (for if you're reading: 本当にお疲れさまでした 🙇‍♂️🙇‍♂️🙇‍♂️).

In no way was this expected and it took me a couple of days to come to terms with this change. Im a sense: everything changed, but also nothing. There's still a lot to do, which brings me to the following;

The most humbling of course has been user response, which to me is who I'm doing this for. From the bottom of my heart: thank you 🙇‍♂️.

Thank you for the kind words and support, I couldn't have done this without you 🙇‍♂️🙇‍♂️🙇‍♂️.

---

Either way, let's get to it! Welcome to edition 24 of the Sunday Report!

I hope most of you have had the opportunity to enjoy the new adaptive trigger implementation on Apple devices, I wish I could've done the same for the haptics but that's not possible as of yet. I'm gonna try and poke Apple, see if they can do something with their API's.

That said, I intend to bring the same adaptive trigger tech to all the other platforms so you can finally enjoy the 1:1 experience there as well.

# Asobi for Apple (link)

As you might've read, I've split version 1.4.2 in two pieces since I really needed to get released. I had done a lot of big optimisations to it and I've heard you guys noticed it! So glad to hear that tbh.

There's a couple of big features coming with version 1.4.3, one of them is "video filters" of which you can see "work in progress" screenshots in the attached gallery.

Currently there's about 16 different ones, which I might cut down a bit (or maybe not). One of them is cell-shaded mode, and I have to say I'm quite satisfied to see how well it looks while playing.

I'll try to share a video later this week showcasing some of the new filters.

These filters will also be coming to the other platforms at a later date.

I've also been able to further optimise the streaming experience, which might result in "game mode" making its return next week as well.

Version 1.4.3 for Apple is scheduled for release in week 34.

# Asobi for Android (link)

Due to unforeseen circumstances (see intro) version 1.1 has had some delay, I hope you understand that what happened last week can have quite some impact as a solo developer.

Either way, I'm back on track: My Fold 8 was delayed a bit, but is now in hand so I can get to work on DeX support, I'm well underway to adding 2D->3D realtime conversion and split screen. Next to that it should have the adaptive trigger parity update as well.

After version 1.1 is done I'll focus on making Asobi work on Android TV as well. (incidentally, my NVIDIA Shield finally arrived yesterday.)

Version 1.1 for Android is scheduled for release in week 35.

# Asobi for Steam (link)

Although the steamOS/linux still needs some work and your first response has been overwhelmingly positive, there's still some work to do for niche cases. That said It's not stopped me from starting work on getting the Windows version out there. Plan is to have it out before next weekend, depending if everything goes swimmingly with my test devices.

Invites to the PlayTest are sent out daily in batches, once I'm comfortable with the state of both versions I will open the flood gates until the full version is released.

Expect to see many Steam updates to come in week 34, and a Windows version should drop as well before this weekend.

# Asobi for Meta Quest (link)

The PlayTest for Meta Quest is in full effect, thank you all for the great feedback. I have quite some changes planned for the first Meta Quest store release.

The biggest issue I'm running into is access to the NPU's on the processor. The result is that this is holding back proper realtime 2D-3D support for Meta Quest. The moment I have access to that (Pretty please Meta, someone poke Mark please 👀) I'll be able to make it much better than it currently is. Which is why that mode will become an experimental toggle for the time being.

You'll see a couple of updates this week as I work to the full release version of Asobi for Meta Quest.

The full release is currently scheduled for week 35.

# Midori for Apple (r/MidoriApp)

Version 1.0.4 of Midori is planned to be submitted tomorrow (Monday the 17th), which has a lot of bugfixes for any crashes and some Top Secret stuff for all of you to enjoy. More about that tomorrow.

# In closing

I need to get back to work, loads to do before September starts.

Thanks again for everything, if you need me -> just ask ok? I'll get to you asap.

Thanks!

[Sunday Report] Edition 23, Week 33: The Week Everything Happened At Once

Hi,

What a week. Seriously. Like some kind of emotional roller coaster ride 😂😂😂. You can make schedules all you want, but sometimes things just happen all at once.

Good news first:

Steam PlayTest is out now!!! Meta Quest PlayTest is out now!!!

Unexpected to have Steam out in the wild as of this time. So what happened?

Well, the original plan looked something like this;
- Asobi for Apple version 1.4.2 relay testing + finish up any bugs
- Midori version 1.0.4 new features + finish up any bugs
- Release Asobi for Apple version 1.4.2
- Release Midori for Apple version 1.0.4
- Release the Meta Quest PlayTest

Seems semi-uneventful to me, but this week had different plans, what actually happened was an easy start of the week on Monday with some Asobi for Apple version 1.4.2 relay testing and getting the TestFlight out there so testers could test the new Internet Remote Play relay.

Which incidentally has also resulted in building a completely new Internet Remote play video pipeline, which was hardly planned.

In getting ready for the Meta Quest PlayTest, I added some last minute polish and update which sadly broke the immersive view".

In the meantime I've been adding more new features to Midori version 1.0.4 than expected, which was supposed to be released this week

On Wednesday I felt like finishing work on the new internet/cloud connection screen for Asobi

Then I finally released the Meta Quest PlayTest last Thursday, which has been well received as you can see here and here

That same day I received news from Steam support that I'll just have to wait longer than the usual 3 to 5 business days which is when I posted this, and that's where it was darkest before dawn and I thought this was never going to happen. Oh boy, was I wrong.

Friday: the fun started. I finally received an email from Steam support that the release version for Asobi needs one more setting adjusted, which needed to say "3rd party account access required", if I'd had that set earlier, it would've already been approved for sale.

Then I seem to have missed the email saying "The PlayTest is approved", which I discovered when I went looking for the same "3rd party account access required" setting for the PlayTest version and it was approved -> thought about it for 2 seconds and clicked the big green "Release" button. Which didn't go unnoticed 😂

Which was paired with a lot of confusion when the queue for players waiting for access just kept going up, which it still is doing btw as I'm writing this. It's crazy how many players have access to the PlayTest as of right now and it just won't stop going up: 5k in just 48 hours.

Don't even get me started on the loads of late nights talking with my man u/Jdunrrp

And of course getting humbled big time by an appreciation post from u/Sockobotto

And now it's Sunday and as I'm writing this Sunday Report I get news from u/phraze91 that Asobi is now on Eurogamer .... and on Videocardz 🙇‍♂️🙇‍♂️🙇‍♂️

What a week.

Either way, back to work, time to fix some bugs.

Plan for the coming days:

- Getting the updated Steam PlayTest build out asap (controller navigation and cloud library fixes).
- Fix the Meta Quest immersive screen
- Release version 1.4.2 of Asobi
- Release version 1.0.4 of Midori

Let's get this done.

More next week!

/v

P.S. Played more Halo than expected.

[Open Beta] Asobi Remote/Cloud Play for Meta Quest

Hi!

Back in March I shared a first look at Asobi running on the Quest 3, and a bunch of you asked to be kept in the loop. Well, it's here: the PlayTest/Beta started this week!

For those seeing this for the first time: Asobi (r/Asobi) is a PlayStation Remote Play and Cloud Gaming client I built, which has been available on Apple and Android for some time now.

What it does on your Quest

  • Stream your PS5/PS4 over your home network or the internet (Remote Play)
  • PlayStation Cloud Gaming: stream PS3, PS4 and PS5 games without a console in the house (PS Plus Premium required)
  • Immersive mode: a giant curved screen with ambient Light Spill, positioned wherever you want in your space
  • Realtime 2D to 3D conversion: flat games with actual depth (experimental on Quest, the device gets warm, set 720p for this one)

What you need

  • A Bluetooth game controller (DualSense, etc.). Quest controllers position the screen but can't play games.
  • For PS Cloud Gaming you'll need a PSN account with an active PS Plus Premium subscription

Join the PlayTest!

Join here: https://www.meta.com/s/bn96gblky (or DM me your Meta account email and I'll invite you directly). After joining, Asobi shows up in search on your Quest.

FYI: All premium features are unlocked while the beta runs.

Expect bugs, which is kinda the point of a PlayTest, and please report what you find! For the full notes, see the announcement on Asobi here

I hope you guys like it, let me know what you think!

Questions? Just shoot!

[PlayTest] The Asobi for Meta Quest PlayTest has Launched!

Hi,

Good news! The Asobi PlayTest invites for Meta Quest have been sent!

How to join

  • Check your email: it contains a link. Open it, click Join, and Asobi becomes searchable on your Quest for install.
  • Not signed up yet but want in? Send me your Meta account email via DM, or use this link: https://www.meta.com/s/bn96gblky

What's in the PlayTest

  • Remote Play and Cloud gaming support
  • Immersive mode with Light Spill
  • Realtime 2D to 3D conversion (see performance note below)
  • Fully featured: everything is unlocked until the PlayTest ends

Before you start

  • Pair a game controller (DualSense, etc.). The Quest's own controllers can't be used for gameplay, only for moving the screen around.
  • For 3D conversion, set the stream resolution to 720p60 or 720p30. The Quest is quite underpowered for this, but you guys insisted I keep it in. And yes, your device will get hot.
  • Expect bugs. That's what a PlayTest is for.

Questions? Just shoot!

Have fun!

[Sunday Report] Edition 22, Week 32: Can you feel it?

Hi,

Sunday Report! Edition 22! Another big milestone for PlayStation Remote Play has been achieved!

As you may know, I've been in touch with some of the key figures in the PS Remote Play scene. Last week the OG u/grill2010 checked in with me, asking if I knew anything about the Saros adaptive triggers issue that's been going around.

Issue is that none of the current Third-Party Remote Play apps have this properly functioning, but the official one does! I couldn't let him down, so I said I'd get on it, and now a couple of days later it's not only fixed, but:

We now have full 1:1 adaptive trigger parity for PlayStation Remote Play! 🔥🔥🔥

I've shared the fix with u/grill2010 as well, which means that not only will this ship with version 1.4.2 of Asobi, it will also come to PXPlay (r/PSPlay) soon!

Many thanks to grill for poking me about this, else this would've been parked for a long time.

As I see it, a milestone for third-party remote play apps, and for me since I get to contribute a tiny bit of code to PXPlay.

Besides this, a lot more has been happening behind the scenes.

I have a truly next gen update coming very soon to Midori, which will bring something no-one has done before. You'll see what I mean when it ships! 🔥🔥🔥

Other than that, I've been working on a definitive solution for solving CGNAT and general connection issues. Thank you who responded to my post, I'll be in touch with you tomorrow.

The Meta Quest PlayTest is starting in week 32 as well, and will hopefully have a full release the week after! Really looking forward to the response! I just hope it won't disappoint.

What to expect for the next releases:

# Asobi for Apple (link)

As you might know version 1.4.2 was delayed again. For good reason, I'm currently working on integrating TURN servers which will help those who have connection issues via Internet Remote Play.

For the update expect fully native adaptive trigger support on DualSense controllers, updated app navigation controls, TURN server support, PSN sign-in optimisations, new recently played cards and widgets, 3D for Mac and a lot of bugfixes!

Version 1.4.2 for Apple is scheduled for release in week 32.

# Asobi for Android (link)

Version 1.0.9 was shipped in week 31 with some much needed video pipeline optimisations and work on version 1.1 has started, which should finally implement 3D support among others.

For those Samsung users using DeX, I have a Fold 8 arriving next week so I can finetune that experience.

Version 1.1 for Android is scheduled for release in week 33.

# Asobi for Steam (link)

Crickets from Steam, I've now sent in some support tickets for both the PlayTest and production version of Asobi, let's hope I hear something in week 32.

I've put in considerable time to make Asobi work as a self-published version, but I'm not done as of yet. There's still a lot of testing that needs to be done. I'm aiming to release it this month.

Also the Steam Machine arrived! Which is quite a dope little machine. The new Steam controller is a must!

# Midori for Apple (r/MidoriApp)

Version 1.0.2 and Version 1.0.3 of Midori dropped last week and my latest post was very well received by the r/xcloud community. 3D support and the aforementioned next-gen should drop soon together with loads of bug-fixes. Also shoutout to u/Few-Oil-6886 for all the fantastic feedback! You're the best!

# In closing

July has been an insane little month, especially with all the discoveries I've made around PlayStation Remote Play, the only challenge left is implementing all of this. That and the amount of ideas I have to expand on what I've found. With each release I try to bring some of what I found into that. I just hope you guys will love it.

And as always thank you all for your fantastic support! And keep those feature requests, bug reports and everything coming! You're helping make these apps truly next-gen!

[Sunday Report] Edition 21, Week 31: Updates, Updates, Updates

https://preview.redd.it/kiluiswbtlfh1.png?width=920&format=png&auto=webp&s=4612ac18ebfa2bc80ffba1c22ef62616f03470da

Hi,

Welcome back for another edition of the Sunday Report! Edition 21!

I hope all of you had a great weekend! I certainly did! Made quite some discoveries this weekend which will make Asobi and Asobi 2.0 much much more interesting. Can't share more yet, beyond what you might've already read in the Midweek report

Asobi for Apple (link)

Version 1.4.2 will bring in some much needed fixes, one of which is to bring latency down some more. Also, some of you had a bug where Asobi showed you the wrong PS+ games list -> this is fixed with this update. Other than that you'll see controller navigation updates (highlights), some video pipeline updates and Mac finally getting the 2D->3D update.

One other thing of note, my new parity list seems to work well, since I'm no longer getting questions about missing games. Even Halo showed up on time for those who pre-ordered it.

I might add a couple of unexpected features with this update, that is, if my research findings are conclusive. 🤞

Version 1.4.2 is scheduled for release in week 31.

Asobi for Android (link)

As you might've noticed, Version 1.0.7/8 dropped and added support for Android 11, PS3 & PS4 games and instant start for remote play + some basic video pipeline optimisations. Feedback has been good, but I still have some bugs to squash.

In the meantime I've been preparing version 1.0.9 which will have some big video pipeline optimisations that will make it much more reliable (most of it is done btw). Next to that you'll see much improved HDR tone-mapping, better colour all around actually and better general support for all Android devices.

This also means that I can finally start work on the Android TV version.

Version 1.0.9 is scheduled for release in week 31 (it's been moved up one week)

Asobi for Steam (link)

Still no news from Steam, I've tried to nudge them a couple of times but no response. Either they have a giant backlog or there's something I'm missing. Either way, we just keep on trucking, it'll launch on Steam eventually.

Progress is being made on the self-published version, which I aim to release in August. There's still a couple of things I need to set up in relation to licensing but it's just a matter of time before that lands.

Incidentally, the Steam Machine is on its way and should be here soon 👀

I'll keep you guys posted!

Midori for Apple (r/MidoriApp)

As expected, version 1.0.2 initially got rejected with questions about cloud streaming. It's back in review and will most likely be available tomorrow. It's almost here 😄

Either way, lots to do! I certainly hope I'll still be able to surprise you with Asobi and Midori by bringing something truly next level for Remote/Cloud Play.

Midori Version 1.0.2 release notes "Some Polish"

Hi,

Time for a new update!

I've managed to make quite a couple of changes, and hunted down multiple bugs, so without further ado;

Plan is to do bi-weekly updates for Midori and I expect to add quite some features with each release. So keep those requests and bug reports coming!

The Release notes for version 1.0.2

# General
- Added Adaptive Frame Pacing (more fluid visuals)
- Mouse and keyboard support (for supported games)
- Local multiplayer support (up to 4 players for supported games)
- Performance enhancements for upscaling and frame generation
- Added Performance Overlay
- Midori icon updated for dark mode
- Added app full reset button

# Cloud Streaming

- Optimised stream stability to prevent disconnects in cloud session
- Interface tweaks for loading the cloud game list faster + better caching
- Proxy selection for unsupported countries (no more VPN needed)

#Platform Specific

- (visionOS) Spatial 3D in 2D and Immersive modes added

Platforms (& Apple review status)

  • iOS/iPadOS - Out now (July 27th)
  • tvOS - Out now (July 28th)
  • macOS - Out now (July 28th)
  • visionOS - Out now (July 30th)

Next update should drop in week 32!

One more thing, review times for Midori have been slow since it always triggers a discussion about game pass/cloud gaming (since I don't paywall that for 3 out of the 4 platforms, so fingers crossed I don't have to paywall it for another client: RIP Apple TV)

[Midweek Update] Research & Development and some Scheduling

Hi,

Time for a quick midweek update!

Research & Development

This week a new feature dropped on Android that allows you to Remote Play one of your recent games straight from the console dashboard, It's kinda like some kind of quickplay. It's pretty much just a preview of things to come.

These past few months I've been dissecting more PlayStation features on how they work exactly and in what way I should integrate them. The good news is that most of this work is now done.

With the next couple of versions of Asobi I'll will start integrating more of these features, think of things like:

- Party Chat via the app (nice for when cloud gaming with friends),
- Sending and receiving pictures/ messages via PSN,
- See which of your friends are online,
- Managing storage of your console,
- Even being able to install games purchased games on your console
- And much much more

Version 1.4.2 of Asobi will start the integration process, and some of these are already available since the latest Android version.

As I see it, it's a nice way to make Asobi more feature rich and adds loads of convenience so you can play more with your friends.

Other than that I'm hard at work fixing bugs, bringing parity to macOS (3D coming in soon) and I think it's time to move split-screen mode out of the experimental status. Split screen was announced quite some months ago on April 1st and has been available since as an experimental feature. So I think it's matured more than enough to be upgraded as a standard feature.

Besides that, I'm still testing 4 player local support without the use of split screen and it seems to work well on the PS4.

Also, I've found a potential way to enable some level of local remote play for a max of 2 players on PS5, so fingers crossed on that one.

As you know, research & development is costly in time, but you'll all soon be able to enjoy the fruits of it soon enough.

Release Schedule

My current plan for the next updates for the apps are.

- Midori version 1.0.2 - week 30 (this week)

- Asobi for Apple version 1.4.2 - week 31

- Asobi for Meta version 1.0 - week 31

- Midori version 1.0.3 - week 32

- Asobi for Android version 1.0.9 - week 32

Asobi for Steam is sadly still in limbo, Im trying to get someone at Valve to respond -> no luck currently. It's now been 3 weeks of silence. So if anyone knows anyone at Valve that can maybe push it a little then please let me know.

That's it for now, more news with the next Sunday Report!

Thanks,

Asobi for Android Version 1.0.8 release notes "Instant Action"

https://preview.redd.it/czgi7s64nleh1.png?width=920&format=png&auto=webp&s=7df409ec8f565facd490fc646a5fb6703edd894a

Hi,

Since developing for Android is quite new for me, it mostly ends up getting a couple of updates in the span of days. I've added a couple of optimisations with this update, such as fixes for the video pipeline to get rid of those pesky green screens and weird gradients when you connect. The Performance Overlay now correctly shows you which cloud server you're connected to.

And something new for Remote Play, currently Android-only:

You'll now see your most recently played games right on the home screen. Tap one and your PS5 starts booting the game while Remote Play connects, so you land straight in the action.

More of these kinds of features will drop in the coming days/weeks.

Release notes for version 1.0.8

# Remote Play

- Added Recently Played section to instantly play any of your recent games (requires PSN login)

# General

- Video Pipeline optimisations
- Performance overlay now correctly shows server it’s connected to
- PSN QRcode sign-in address has been changed to something more convenient.

Platforms (Review status)

  • Android - Out now (July 21st)

Back to work!
