Seeking Input: What do you want to see in this sub?

What sorts of posts etc do you want to see here? I'm thinking about having a particular day of the week where people can post things to buy/sell/trade and for people to share/request services. I lost my Facebook access and Facebook Marketplace is the only thing I really miss about it. What other actions would make this sub more useful/interesting?

I'm also planning on adding tags/flair to add to posts. What are some Knightdale-specific flairs you'd like to see?

Flock Cameras in Knightdale: Join me for a public comment session August 19, 7PM

Greetings fellow Knightdalers!

I’m planning on attending the upcoming public comment session with our Town Council to talk about the use of Automated License Plate Readers (ALPRs) in Knightdale. The session is on Wednesday, Aug 19, starting at 7 PM in the Town Hall.

If, like me, you have concerns about the presence of Flock and other ALPRs in our community, I hope to see you there!

I recently spoke with Assistant Town Manager Dustin Tripp (dustin.tripp@knightdalenc.gov) about the status of ALPRs in Knightdale.

Here’s what I’ve learned so far:

  • Knightdale PD operates 24 fixed ALPRs and 4 mobile ALPRs. They do not know how many privately operated cameras are in use. However, you can see reported cameras in our area here (map linked) or via deflock.org.
  • Authorized uses of the cameras include: Locating stolen vehicles, stolen or lost license plates; Locating missing, endangered, abducted, or wanted persons (including Amber, Silver, and Blue Alerts); Investigating crimes, support arrests, prosecutions, post-conviction confinement, or supervision; Assisting other law enforcement agencies pursuant to a written request for a legitimate law enforcement purposes; Manual hot-list entry only for a documented and time-limited legitimate law enforcement purpose
  • Collected data is deleted after 30 days with a statutory maximum of 90 days. Longer retention requires a preservation request or warrant.
  • A system administrator designated by the Knightdale Chief of Police manages access, training, and compliance.
  • Reviews of collected data are conducted quarterly and reported directly to the Chief of Police.

I’ve asked the following additional questions, for which I’m awaiting a response:

  • Where are the locations of the ALPRs being used by Knightdale PD? Is there a map available for the public?
  • Did Knightdale PD or the Town of Knightdale at any point seek public comment or other input from the wider community regarding the installation and use of Flock Cameras or other Automated License Plate Readers (ALPRs)?
  • Was there a vote by Town Hall members regarding the decision to sign this contract with Flock? If so, do we have access to know how our elected officials voted?
  • How much does the contract with Flock cost annually? How are those funds allocated?
  • When did Knightdale PD originally go into contract with Flock? When is the next renewal period?
  • Are the quarterly audits of the collected data and/or use open for public review?
  • What positions, if any, have Town Council members taken regarding the installation and use of ALPRs?
  • Is there any policy ensuring that police officers who have been on any form of disciplinary action will not be permitted to use the cameras/access the data?

Some additional resources worth considering:

YouTube docs better than the coverage on big streaming platforms?

I’m looking for YouTube coverage of some of the popular crimes/scandals/etc that do a better job than the docs on the big streaming platforms, like the one that covers the Toxic Live Story account. I’m more interested in scandals or crimes that don’t involve rape or murder, but am open to any suggestions. Thanks in advance!

Interactive/Stimulating Toys

I’ve got a high energy/anxious goblin baby. Her playmate is about the same age (7-8 years old) and isn’t as interested in playing with her as when they were younger. My goblin needs more stimulation for during the day when we’re working. Does anyone have suggestions for interactive/stimulating toys that could help her get some of her energy out? TIA!

🚨 NEW from WRAL: Wake County is the worst-funded DA’s office in the state. Republicans are playing politics with public safety. - Wiley Nickel

Wake County prosecutors handle more than 2,600 cases a year on average. In Mecklenburg and Durham, it’s about 1,000 each. More than double the caseload.

Republican lawmakers knew. They had the numbers. They came back this month to fix budget mistakes and left Wake County out. Again.

They’re playing politics with public safety, and we’re all less safe as a result.

What do you love about Knightdale?

What’s something you love about Knightdale? Personally, I love visiting the turtles on Mingo Creek trail, the Hemp Store on Farmwell (and the taco truck outside of it!), and getting burritos at La Casita by the Food Lion. Oh, and the new-ish restaurant by the ABC store has delicious food and huge margaritas! What local spaces/businesses do you live in Knightdale?

2018 Honda Civic Hatch Advice Request: USB Port & Infotainment Upgrade

TL;DR I'd like to replace the USB port and upgrade my crappy infotainment system. Help identifying needed parts and any advice for these upgrades would be much appreciated!

***

Hi folks. I recently posted about the frustrations I've had with the infotainment system in my 2018 Honda Civic Hatch. I'm planning on eventually replacing the infotainment system with something that has CarPlay capacity and just sucks less in general. The replacement system I'm looking at says that I'll need to have my phone plugged into the USB port to access CarPlay so I figure I'd better see about replacing the USB port first. Does anyone have any info/insight/etc about either one of these upgrades? Thanks in advance!

2018 Civic Infotainment Woes (Bad USB, no capacity for reset)

I have the most basic ass package of a 2018 Honda Civic Hatchback. The infotainment center has always been the most frustrating aspect of this car as it's always given me trouble. I've had issues with it connecting to my iPhone for years. It would randomly disconnect or start saying whatever cord I had was a "bad usb." Now it won't accept any cord whatsoever, even cables from Apple itself. I wouldn't mind using bluetooth to connect, but the usb port won't even charge. I tried plugging in a different device (headphones) and can see that it will connect enough to start charging--which it won't do with my phone.

I've looked for ages for an answer but it seems like most solutions don't apply to my particular car. Holding down the power button doesn't do anything. There are no options for resetting the system in the menu. I reviewed the owner's manual but can't find anything about this issue (even though the message says "bad usb, check owner's manual." I also can't find anything in the manual indicating what fuse the infotainment center is connected to. Any advice would be appreciated!

Flock Cameras in Knightdale

Part of what motivated me to create this community was learning about the abundance of Flock cameras in Knightdale via deflock.org. I assumed there were a few, but was unpleasantly surprised to see just how many are actually in our area.

If you aren't sure why this is a concern for many, here are a few sources to catch you up on the discourse:

While many of the cameras in Knightdale are owned by private entities, there are several that are managed by Knightdale PD via their ongoing contract with Flock. To my knowledge, the decision to install these cameras was made without any public input.

The next public comment town council meeting is Wednesday, August 19, at 7 PM. I plan to attend and voice my concerns about the installation and use of these cameras. If you're similarly concerned, I hope to see you there!

P.S. Here's a guide to combating the deployment of Flock cameras in your community.

Current Instructors: Are you missing Canvas materials?

Hey folks. I'm gearing up to teach in the upcoming semester. When I went to Canvas to start working on the materials for my new course, I found there wasn't a course waiting for me. Normally, once the University assigns someone as an instructor, the course automatically shows up in Canvas as unpublished. For some reason, there isn't a course waiting for me. Worse (to me), all of my previously taught courses are missing as well except for the two most recent courses. I'm working with IT but they seem flummoxed as well. Colleagues that I've spoken with don't seem to be having any issues so I'm wondering if this is just happening to me or if others have had similar issues.

I backed up the content from all of the courses, thank goodness, but I put a stupid amount of energy into organizing the materials so that they follow the flow of the course itself. I'm really hoping all of that labor is gone. Not to mention that it saves a ton of time to recycle content from previous courses.

Flock Cameras in the Triangle: Are they in your area?

Editing to Add: If you're concerned about the presence of Flock and other surveillance tools in your area, please contact your local elected officials. Sign up here to participate in the next public comment session of the Raleigh City Council. Check out your own town/city council meeting schedule if you're a resident of one of the surrounding communities.

deflock.org is a mapping tool that allows you to locate Flock surveillance devices anywhere in the United States.

I entered in my zip code out of curiosity and was unpleasantly surprised to see that there are dozens in my area and several in my own neighborhood. I didn't see anything from my local government discussing or even announcing the installation of these cameras. To my knowledge, the general population had no real say in the matter.

Some sources on concerns about the use of Flock cameras to surveil citizens for the curious or anyone out of the loop on the matter (DM me for any paywalled articles). Even if you aren't concerned about mass surveillance, you should at the very least be concerned about the many reports of data misuse and leaks due to Flock's poor digital security standards and lack of regulation:

Tailgate Support Struts for Honda Civic Hatchback

I have a 2018 Honda Civic Hatchback LX. This past winter, the door to the hatchback stopped staying open and, now, actually slams down if we don't hold it up. Advance Autoparts told me that Honda only sells their replacement parts through their own dealership. The dealership in my area quoted me at $236 for two replacement struts (price for parts only, not service).

Can anyone confirm that I need to go through Honda to purchase these parts or is there a cheaper (but reliable) alternative. Additionally, based on my research, it seems fairly easy to replace these on my own but wanted to hear from others for any suggestions/advice about doing it myself.

Thanks in advance!

Can we talk about literally any other documentary? What are you watching now?

Like, stahhhp. There’s a megathread. I started the Octopus Murders. Pretty interesting, but I’m dubious of any documentary where the filmmakers put themselves front and center.
