For this session, we'll be reading the chapter "The Concept of Enlightenment" from Dialectic of Enlightenment by Theodor Adorno and Max Horkheimer (read it here). Philosophy meetup this Sunday (6/14) @ 1:30 @ Work Café Santander - The Trolley Problem

This week, we're diving into one of moral philosophy's most famous thought experiments: the trolley problem!

In her paper "The Problem of Abortion and the Doctrine of Double Effect," Philippa Foot poses a hypothetical moral dilemma: A runaway trolley is headed for 5 workmen and will certainly kill them if nothing is done. Unfortunately, the brakes are stuck, but the driver may redirect the trolley, saving the 5 but killing 1 in the other track. Foot uses this scenario to argue the relevant moral distinction is between doing, vs allowing harm. Thomson expands on Foot's example to challenge this intuition - the concepts of killing vs. allowing to die are not enough to untangle this dilemma. Instead, we must analyze the relationship between rights, responsibility, and present-tensed nature of moral decision making.

🗓 When: Sunday, Jun 14 at 1:30 PM

📍 Where: Work Café Santander, 85-87 N 6th St, Williamsburg

📖 Reading: “The Trolley Problem” by Judith Jarvis Thomson
