Onn 8 (2024) tablets as little as $33

Walmart has some new open box Onn 8 (2024) tablets available for as little as $32 (not $33). This a low spec 8" tablet with a 800x1280 screen resolutiion. It has the Helio 80 processor, 3GB of RAM and 32GB of eMMC storage. Surprisingly, this tablet updates to Android 15.

Note: I have purchased a few of VIP Outlet's open box tablets, including an Onn 8. The boxes were actually unopened, however, they were quite damaged.

Unisoc S565 processor???

Is anyone familiar with the Unisoc S565 processor? I am curious about how it perform on various benchmarks. In particular, how does it compare with the MT8775 (Dimensity 7300)?

The 13" Alldocube iPlay 70 Max Pro uses the Unisoc S565. It's the only device I know of that uses this processor. This Alldocube is now available in the US from Walmart for about $250.

At about the same time, Walmart's house brand Onn has released a 13.2" tablet. The 13.2 Onn uses the MT8775 processor, which is also in Samsung's A11+. This Onn sells for $288 including a stylus and folio case.

$100 tablets in the US???

You can't get much for $100 in the US these days. Amazon, Walmart and other websites offer plenty of tablets for $100 or less. These tablets usually have weak processors, poor screens, low memory, low storage and/or an old version of Android. Some sub $100 tablets have all of these.

I've found one $100 tablet that people on a tight budget should consider - the Headwolf Hpad 5. The Hpad 5 has decent specs, but it only has Android 13, which is now 3 years old. (If you're lucky, it might upgrade to 14, but I won't promise). A new Hpad 5 is $100 on clearance from Headwolf's website.

The Hpad 5 has a 10.5" screen with a 1200x1920 resolution. Its processor is the MediaTek Helio G99. It has 8GB of real RAM (plus 8GB of virtual RAM) and 128GB of UFS 2.2 storage. It also has Widevine L1, which lets you stream videos at hi-res. It has a large 8500mAh battery with 30-watt quick charging. It even has 4G LTE.

Headwolf is a smaller Chinese brand that is not well know in the US. Most of its tablets are low cost and not particularly high quality. Headwolf also makes some small gaming tablets. I bought an Fpad 3 from the company website and it is a nice little tablet. Headwolf tablets are shipped from China.

Stroke recovery... or not

I had a stroke about 19 years ago. While going through rehab, I met a number of stroke survivors who had recovered completely, or almost completely. They assured me that I'd get better and I believed them. It gave me something to work toward.

After a year or two, I realized that, no I'm not going to recover, well not that much. My right side has paralysis. I need an AFO and cane to walk. I sometimes drool and I can't control my emotions. I can't even sign my name. It totally sucks!

However, I'm glad that I had that unrealistic expectation of a full recover. It helped my outlook on life. I kept thinking, this is temporary, I'll get over it. This outlook clearly helped me to recover as much as I did. And it sure beat rolling up into a ball and feeling sorry for myself.

I was disappointed when I realized that my recovery had hit its limits. That sure bummed me, but I also realized how far I had come.

How do others feel about giving disabled people realistic or unrealistic expectations of full recover?

I use an AFO to stabilize my foot when i walk. I have hemiparesis and foot drop from a stroke. I've had a huge AFO for years and I'm tired of needing to find and buy a 13 EEE shoe to fit it. And because one hand has even worse paralysis, I need to wear shoes that use velcro instead of laces.

I need to find a smaller AFO that can fit inside a more normal size shoe. (My good foot takes size !0.5 EEE.) I also need an AFO that I can put on with only one hand. I have seen a few AFOs and braces Amazon and Walmart.com, but I'm not sure which one will work for me.

If any of you have used and liked an Amazon or Walmart.com AFO, I would appreciate hearing from you. TIA
