Auto Detecting BiDi

I'm in a position where using simplex SFPs made the most economical sense. I'm about 5 years in on a few sets of generics. It got me thinking, what is the technical hurdle to building both wavelengths into a BiDi adapter and having them auto negotiate? For years nics and switchports couldn't do Auto MDIX now almost every device has it baked in. This would eliminate the need for a matched pair.

Mystery Oil Leak

Not looking forward to investigating this one. Took my SeaRay 250DA out a couple weeks ago it ran great, I trailered it home and parked it in the garage. Monday there was a puddle of fresh oil on the floor that had come out of the drain hole. I initially thought it was a trim cylinder leaking but it was indeed engine oil and it had come out of the drain hole. It took at least a week to appear and oil on the ground is maybe only about 5 or 6 table spoons with no more in the last couple days. Hope it's something simple, the hardest part about owning this boat is contorting myself to get down in to the engine bay to do maintenance.

Cuyahoga Valley NP

Considering a trip to Cuyahoga Valley NP this weekend anybody happen to have been there in the last few days how are the waterfalls looking? We're south and have had an unseasonable amount of rain in the last few weeks, wasn't sure what it was like up there.

Bring your own battery power station

Why are there so few BYOBattery boxes that would work directly with a customer provided LifePo4? For portable use it seems like the only option is buy a power station with a fixed battery or build your own from discrete components.

Do you have external file sharing enabled in your M365 tenant?

We have historically had external filesharing disabled in our M365 tenant for security purposes. We are getting more and more request to enable the feature. I'm currently in discussions with leadership about the security implications of enabling external sharing. There is a business need for it and not enabling it is leading to shadow IT workarounds. I'd like to take r/sysadmin's pulse on this topic. Is it enabled in your org do you do any active monitoring of files shared outside the org?

Lost a fork

I was brush hogging the other day and had the forks on my tractor. I like to keep the forks on when cutting trails, makes it easy to move a downed tree or other debris. I lost a fork somewhere without noticing. I walked the entire area I cut with no luck, with a mass as big as the fork I wonder if a metal detector would be helpful?

Is Summersville Lake Going To Be Unusually Busy This Weekend?

Was considering taking the boat to Summersville lake this weekend but am seeing the National Scout Jamboree is going on. Will the lake be incredibly busy this weekend or is all Jamboree activity confined to the Summit Bechtel Reserve?

Possibly have the wrong prop on my 1996 250 DA

My SeaRay 250 DA with the 5.7 and Alpha One outdrive is having a hard time getting on plane and at WOT it will redline. It has a 15.25x15 3 blade prop, my limited research tells me this is the wrong prop for the boat. Recommendations seem to vary... either a 14.5x17 4 blade or 15x17 3 blade but I am also seeing recommendations for a 15x19 3 blade. Do you have this boat/engine/outdrive or similar size? What prop do you recommend?

Head Troubles

Boat has a very nice Vacuflush system with a nice porcelain head. I mostly trailer to two different local lakes none of which currently have black tank pump out available. Hate to rip it out and shove a plastic portable toilet in there but I’m at a bit of a loss. Is there a reasonable method for dumping a marine black tank? Do I need to get a sacrificial shop vac?

WV boaters what's your favorite lake in the NCWV region to overnight on?

Looking to spend a night or two in my boat on the lake. Tygart is my go to but I'm looking for a change of scenery . Anybody overnight on Cheat Lake, Burnsville, or Stonewall? Sutton, Summersville and Deep Creek are a little to far for me.

What's everybody doing for air conditioning?

I mostly come from the RV world and a few years ago did a major solar build out that gave me off grid air conditioning. I'd like to do something similar on my boat. I've got far less space/weight capacity for equipment on the boat. I think I'd like to avoid a marine AC system that requires raw water as I may need to occasionally camp in the cabin on the hard.

I opted for a Furrion Chill Cube for the RV but did a good bit of research into the 12v units. I think the CountryMod or Outequip 12v units would fit the power and cooling needs. Anybody using an RV style AC in their hatch?

1997 SeaRay 250 DA

Just picked up a splash ready 1997 250 DA. Every few years I get a hankering to buy an old express cruiser, it's like I get amnesia and forget how much of a headache owning an old boat is.

  • 1990 Bayliner 2855 Cierra Sun Bridge
    • Poorest quality boat I've owned by far
    • OMC King Cobra Outdrive - I was dumb an new to boats. Nothing inherently wrong with that engine/outdrive combo, it's actually pretty solid. Lack of parts and ability to get it repaired is the issue.
    • Best cabin and cockpit layout even if everything was kind of junky
  • 1989 SeaRay 230DA
    • This boat had great build quality, very solid, it was also well maintained.
    • Had the 454 and Bravo outdrive, the boat would scoot down the water and had no problem pulling a tube, as long as your wallet would allow.
    • The cabin layout was ok but the cockpit layout was awful, made it hard to enjoy the boat with more than two people on board.
  • 1994 Bayliner 2355 Ciera
    • Bayliner build quality had improved marginally but not SeaRay quality.
    • Cockpit and cabin layout was nice similar to the 2855 but smaller.
    • Only owned this boat for a month, someone made me an offer on it too good to pass up.
  • 1997 250 DA
    • Build quality is as good as 1989 230DA.
    • Cabin layout is a bit better but cockpit layout has significantly improved.
    • A lot of modern touches are evident compared to the 89. Looks like this will be comfortable as weekender for four adults.
    • Has the 350 and an Alpha one outdrive, I fear it may be a little under powered, I'll let you know next week.

I've also owned two pontoon boats, I don't even care to talk about them. They are 100% functional, easy to tow, easy to launch, easy to work on, can hold tons of people, have a shallow draft, have lower operating costs........ Literally the perfect boat for the waterways and lakes I have access to, but I hate them, they feel like the minivan of boats, I find no joy in owning one. I'm generally a practical guy but sometimes the heart wants what the heart wants.

Single handing a 27' Express Crusier

It's been a while since I've owned an express cruiser, and am thinking about picking up a 240 DA this weekend. Anybody single hand one of these on the regular? In the past I always had another set of hands this season I'll be solo quite often. I'll be trailering to local lakes and maybe occasionally on the river. My biggest concern is launch and load, I know its possible just curious how stressful it is to do on the regular.

Chill Cube Test: 1000W solar, 400Ah LiFepo4, and 2Kw inverter.

Having great overnight results with the Chill Cube on our last trip I recently decided to do a not very scientific daytime test in the drive way.

  • Camper FR NoBo 20.3 Beast Mode
  • Test timeframe 10:00am - 7:00pm
  • Outside temp 84F min 95F max
  • Chill Cube Set temp 75F eco button set to 75%
  • 2x 400 watt solar panels with a no name MPPT charge controller
  • 1x 200 watt solar panel with a 30amp GoPower PWM solar controller (factory installed)
  • 2Kw WFCO pure sine wave inverter (factory installed)
  • 2x 200AH Powerurus LiFePo4
    • Battery SoC start 100%
    • Battery SoC end 55%

I stepped inside to check every couple of hours and the Chill Cube had no problem keeping up. According to the MPPT charge controller the 2x 400W panels max output for the day was recorded at 580 watts. I don't have any data from the GoPower controller. I was pleasantly surprised with the battery SoC at the end of the test. It's certainly not enough battery for 24x7 AC but it shows me that I can get at more at least a full days worth of AC if I start with a full charge and have good sun.

How wrong was this outdoor pool circuit installed.

Just decommissioned my pool and was taking out the outdoor circuit that someone had installed. On a small pole near the filter was a duplex outlet with the top outlet switched and the bottom outlet always on.

20Amp Breaker ---> GFCI outlet ---> Junction/relay box --> Direct bury 12-3--> Duplex outlet near pool.

In the relay box the hot leg was split in 2, one leg was switched by the relay and one leg was unswitched and the neutral was shared. Breaker, GFCI outlet, & relay were in the basement. Other than the questionably repurposed packaged relay, I think this was a mostly safe install but I'm curious about sharing a neutral and what part of this wasn't actually to code.

Last Minute International Trip Ideas?

I've got some free time and can leave anytime in the evening on July 7th and have to be back anytime before the end of the day on July 15th. I'm on the East coast PIT, IAD,BWI,CLI,& CMH are all within reasonable distance of me.

Where would you go on an international last minute solo adventure? I don't necessarily need to take the entirety of the window and I'd like to keep the trip under $3k USD but could splurge a little bit.

I'm considering Chile, flights from IAD are priced right, but I've been there recently. I was in Mexico last summer I have no interest in going back. Lets leave Canada off the list for now as I've got some future Canadian travel plans.
