USMobile + Bargain Hunters

I see people who jump from a US Mobile elsewhere before their 1 year promo is up so they can come back for a new promo. I guess I appreciate that these people have more time than I do :).

I moved to US Mobile a year ago on the $300 promo. At the time I was paying ... $100ish/mo to Verizon with some unlimited plan + apple watch.... for like 15 YEARS!

I just paid my $390 renewal and couldn't be happier. I traveled internationally twice, and you know what I did to prepare? Nothing. Such a relief.

I'm thankful for the value, the support personnel here on reddit, etc.. I don't see myself going anywhere anytime soon.

Would you find this useful? Smart home control web page. [host]

Edit: thank you for the feedback. Sounds like people are wary of smarthome stuff in an Airbnb. Makes sense. I won’t bother adding this QR code/web page.

I'm a host and my house has lots of smart home equipment in it. The equipment is invisible to the guests. I use it to automatically turn on the lights/water heater/hvac and code the lock on check in day (it's all connected to the airbnb calendar).

I am going to put a QR code in the house that you can scan to get to a web page that lets you control fans, locks, and lights from your phone:

https://motoretreat.com/assets/local-control.png

This is only available on the local wifi network.

Note that this completely additive - the thermostat, the switches, all work exactly how you would expect.

Would you use this?

California DMV ...personalized plate in limbo

Lost personalized plate... this is a plate I already own but am converting it from car to motorcycle.

AAA didn't know how to convert car -> motorcycle while removing a symbol while also converting it to a black plate, so in Oct 2026 I sent the reassignment form to DMV along with a check and a letter explaining what I was asking for.

I received a receipt back in the mail showing that the plate had been ordered, and it showed the correct configuration. The date on that receipt is Oct 9.

Long story short, plate has been MIA. Never received by AAA.

Various DMV chat or phone reps confirmed that the plate was ordered but not assigned, and one was able to tell me that it had not yet shipped, and didn't know why. He went deep into "what car was this last on" and "what day did you sell the car" and "what vehicle is this going on" and "why did the dealer 'sub-plate' your motorcycle instead of giving you the original" [motorcycle was purchased used]. I have no context on why any of this matters. That last call was on June 9 - he said he would open a case for the personalized plate people to review and I should hear back in 5-10 days [Narrator: He didn't hear back.]

Finally called in and got Sacramento to return my call (24 hr turnaround on that). This person could see the case that was opened on June 9th, but said the case was closed because they didn't have proof that it was not received by AAA (I put AAA as the office to ship to....and of course I called AAA before the DMV each time to double-check they didn't have it).

They said I'll have to call AAA and tell them to call the DMV Field Support Helpdesk.

AAA was busy, a supervisor is going to call me back today or tomorrow...

My buddy got his personalized plate in 66 days (it used to be 10+ months during covid, but it's currently 2-4 months. It's been 9 months for me, everyone at the DMV agrees I should have had it by now.)

Good times....

Can a customer service manager override my ability to keep a cable card with a new TV plan?

Chat tells me that I can't change to a cheaper TV plan and retain my cable card. The online change plan flow errors out "you must contact customer service..."

I'm keeping this cable card (and my HDHomeRun + ChannelsDVR) until it stops working completely.

Just so good.

Backroad romp through the Sierra foothills this past weekend, a fantastic end to a 680 mile weekend.

I recently posted that I made my own noise monitor, and several thought it was an invasion of privacy. I’d like to understand more people’s thoughts on them.

The county next to mine is now requiring them in order to obtain your vacation rental permit. They do bi-annual fire inspections and that’s one of the things they check for. My county does fire inspections as well, but luckily decided not to implement the noise monitor restriction.

My Airbnb is in the same county as S. Lake Tahoe, but is nearly an hour away in the wilderness. Unfortunately, S. Lake Tahoe has become such a shitshow, most of these vacation rental rules have been put in place to combat issues there…. But I still have to obey.

If I decide to deploy my DIY unit, I’d do so on the patio. Many others put them inside, and there are commercial solutions (Minut, Noiseaware).

For those that have them, have you seen any success? When it goes off, what happens? Do you get notified or do you find a way to automatically notify the guest?
