What are some surprising or uncommon things that helped you simplify your life?
I’m looking for some ways to simplify my life that maybe I haven’t thought of yet. curious about what other people have done that isn’t the usual kind of suggestions.

Overpass
Abigail Swoboda
In our dreams, we’ve started seeing the phantoms planted beneath our floorboards—
and we fear that there is no door that is always open for us.
It took too long to realize the tenderness of ice cubes in our tomato soup
and that each sound is a sentence.
And when we wake up, the house is full of smoke from fires burning somewhere else, but all we can do is close the windows and take out the trash.
Abigail Swoboda’s poem “Overpass,” was selected by Short Edition in partnership with Temple University. Abigail Swoboda graduated from Temple with degrees in French and English. They have continued their studies at Temple and expect to graduate with their M.A. in English in 2021.

my friend is coming to town for Pride and we are both extremely on a budget. other than the marches and parade, what can we do for free? is the party in civic center free this year?
I’ve been vegetarian since 1997 and vegan since 2001. I am dog sitting for people that are heavy meat eaters and using all their cookware and dishes. let me tell you I am having the worst gastrointestinal issues. I am eating my normal food and the only difference is using their pots and pans to cook. I didn’t think this sort of cross contamination was real but is it?? Do other people have any problems with cross contamination from eating food cooked on pans also used for meat?
my personal trainer quit and I don’t think I want to continue my membership if she’s not there. I would like to find a program or an app that I can do at home with my bands and hand weights that doesn’t require a gym membership. what are other people using?
A three-month national investigation by Beyond Plastics found that not a single tracked Starbucks cold-beverage cup ended up at a recycling facility — even when the cups were placed in clearly marked recycling bins inside Starbucks stores.
I have a pretty large tree thanks to cousins that have been doing genealogy for a while. But also I’m pretty sure some of the information is incorrect and I have been trying to clean up my tree. When I look at my journeys I see ancestors listed as belonging to that journey even though I don’t have documentation of them being in that location and other trees have them located somewhere else (possibly incorrectly) So for example my Kentucky journey has an ancestor allegedly from Pennsylvania. How is he being assigned to my Kentucky journey? Is it from other trees or something else? Should I be trying to find documentation of him in Kentucky?
I am a deeply religious Hindu in the US and I am constantly shocked by Christian beliefs. Even though I grew up here and my father attempted to force Catholicism on me I forget about Christian philosophy and beliefs sometimes. Today I was having a conversation with a religious Christian person about current events and how the world is inherently corrupted and how evil forces are present in the world. I was shocked. As a Hindu I believe in a world that is auspicious and abundant, that life is a blessing and everything exists within Shiva, and that the so called evil in our world is the work of humans and not inherent to life in Bhuloka. Human life is precious and being born into this world is a blessing. It’s hard to interact with people that believe the opposite, and I have no interest in debating other religious belief systems so I just let the topic drop.
had an emergency surgery 1 month ago. No digestive side effects, wounds are healed, sometimes a little pain if I twist wrong, I still don’t have my strength back and I am having some seriously debilitating fatigue. I expected to be a lot better by now. Is this normal 1 month post surgery?
I mended the weak spots on the thighs of my jeans a few months ago and the stitching is already destroyed. Half the stitching on one patch is completely gone. I’m so frustrated. Do I need to use carbon fiber yarn or something??? What are we all doing about this?
I am chronically ill and have been using amazon prime for almost all my groceries and shopping. I do not have friends that can help me when I’m sick so I’ve been using amazon prime as the friend who will go get me cold medicine, cough drops, vitamin water and frozen burritos. I am also on food stamps and amazon offers grocery delivery using food stamps since I am not able to regularly grocery shop for myself. Even for medical stuff there’s very few pharmacies left and everything is locked up, so I had to buy my bandaids and tylenol from amazon too. I have been wanting to quit amazon for years but I haven’t found any local alternatives.
what am I missing here? is there some alternative option for same day delivery, low income groceries, OTC pharmacy for someone who is generally not well enough to go into Target or Safeway or whatever.
