Are there validated methods for measuring the reliability of one's own reasoning and detecting systematic self-bias?

Gifted individuals can arrive at strongly held conclusions that differ substantially from prevailing social consensus. Agreement with the majority is obviously not a reliable measure of truth, but neither is internally consistent reasoning necessarily evidence that one's conclusions are well calibrated.

This raises a more general psychological question: How can an individual objectively assess the reliability of their own reasoning when external social validation is limited or potentially misleading?

Some possible strategies I can imagine include:

- Actively searching for evidence that would falsify rather than confirm a hypothesis.

- Generating competing hypotheses and comparing their predictive power.

- Assigning explicit probabilities to predictions and later measuring calibration.

- Reasoning from the opposite hypothesis, for example: What observations would I expect if the inverse interpretation were true?

- Distinguishing evidence that genuinely discriminates between hypotheses from evidence compatible with both.

- Maintaining prediction records to compare confidence with actual outcomes.

The last approach seems particularly interesting because it could produce quantitative measures such as calibration error, Brier score, log loss, discrimination, or confidence-versus-accuracy curves rather than relying on introspective impressions.

However, these methods mostly come from Bayesian reasoning, forecasting, and decision theory rather than psychometrics.

Are there established psychological or psychometric methods specifically designed to measure metacognitive calibration, susceptibility to self-generated belief systems, or systematic reasoning bias at the individual level?

More speculatively, could a useful self-assessment framework combine:

  1. probabilistic forecasting

  2. adversarial hypothesis generation

  3. falsification attempts

  4. prospective prediction logging

  5. retrospective calibration analysis

  6. measures of metacognitive confidence

I'm particularly interested in research on metacognitive efficiency, calibration, overconfidence, belief updating, cognitive reflection, active open-minded thinking, and debiasing.

Are German Expats Welcome in Argentina?

Hi.. I'm just wondering... Are Native Germans welcome in Argentina as expats? (Assuming they are willing to learn the language, integrate into society, bring value, help and money; knowhow and support with the willingness to be a benefit for society -- classic German values! Hard working and supporting everyone who needs a hand). How about Russians? And what would be the right place to move to? Are there some typical areas where German Expats live or where Germans are more welcome or safe than somewhere else?

Edit: A few people mentioned that the term "Expat" could be understood as me trying to imply that I'm "trying to make the point that I'm better than immigrants from other regions or social-economic status". I just want to stress that I'm very sorry if my wording comes over like that. That's not what I intended. Here in Germany the word Expat is the natural term when you intend to live abroad. I don't see myself or my wife anything different from any other immigrant. An immigrant is an immigrant no matter if brown or white. What matters, in my view, are the good intentions, the willing to contribute and just being a decent human being. Bringing value and now wanting to take but wanting to give and share.

I added MTP to local SoTA Agentic Coding Model Ornith 35B FP8 E4M3

Just wanted to share that I was looking for an optimal way to run Ornith 35B in FP8 with E4M3 and MTP with vLLM but there was no out-of-the-box model with MTP drafter support. So I grafted this new model! It's 18% faster than without MTP and the drafter acceptance rate is not bad (70% on avg).

It should run on any RTX based setup > 80GB VRAM with full context window 256k. Might also do well on Unified Memory Systems like GB10 (for this - use my script and graft the MTP model into a target NVFP4 model!).

I work with Hopper and Ada gen hardware, so this is the Pareto optimal for me. Have fun!

No matter which direction you look: everything is shit, unless you constantly lie to yourself or close your eyes. And then, for all the torment called life, there isn't even any apparent meaning. What absurd shit...

And to put a little bit of icing on the cake: if everything were meaningless, I could give a fuck and YOLO through life. But thanks to universal uncertainty, we cannot know anything for certain. We might end up getting a VIP interview with some kind of god figure after life - and you better prepare well for that...

Oh, and if you thought you could just focus on morals then, because thug life: cause and effect has you by the nuts and will tell you that every action, and every omitted action, has some nasty consequence. So you better be a good slave to some random billionaire - indirectly - and work in order to "make a painful living"..

And as if that weren’t enough, you also get a freaking random initialization at birth, and you know shit about your talents and weaknesses. Not even your body type is obvious to you. You are a baby, delivered as an absolutely stupid creature into the hands of fate, hopefully born to parents who love you. And you better be lucky that they can feed you.

Jackpot if you inherit a house in a few years.

If you don't... well, that sucks.

If you can't afford education... well, you suck.

And if you can't afford a doctor... well...

The whole fucking universe seems to hate living conditions, and the whole fucking world seems to hate happy people. That's why everyone is trying to steal from you. Money, energy, time, attention - whatever they can get. There is nothing but trade between people. It might look like something else, but there is always some kind of deal underneath every relationship.

Intelligence vs. Skills vs. Knowhow

A wonderful, yet apocryphal, quote by developmental psychology pioneer Jean Piaget:

"L'intelligence, ce n'est pas ce que l'on sait, mais ce que l'on fait quand on ne sait pas."

"Intelligence is not what you know, it's what you do when you don't know"

Apparently this is not a real quote but a synthesis of Piaget's positions on the topic. Psychologist John Holt reformulated and popularized it in a 1964 book: "The true test of intelligence is not how much we know how to do, but how we behave when we don't know what to do."

These simple quotes clarify many questions surrounding Al today:

- Why the accumulation of declarative knowledge seems like Intelligence but is not intelligence.

- Why the accumulation of skills seems like intelligence but is not intelligence.

- Why the ability to solve new problems "zero shot" without prior training on said problem is an important metric of intelligence.

- Why intelligence is not a collection of learned skills but an ability to acquire new skills very quickly, with very little or no training.

Our mental model of reality gives us the ability to predict the consequences of our actions, which gives us the ability to plan, which gives us the ability to apprehend new situations without prior training.

Are gifted people more responsible for "saving the world"?

I keep coming back to a moral question:

If someone has more capacity to understand complexity, do they also have more responsibility to act on that understanding?

Many destructive ideologies seem to follow a similar pattern: they stop analyzing systems and start morally condemning individuals by group identity - sex, race, religion, nationality, class, or whatever category is currently useful. Once that happens, nuance collapses. People become symbols. Blame becomes simple. Dialogue becomes harder. Conflict is inevitable, justice falls short, and suffering is guaranteed.

At the same time, the human brain seems to prefer energy-efficient explanations. Simple narratives are cheaper than complex reasoning. "This group is the problem" is cognitively easier than "this is a multi-variable system with competing incentives, feedback loops, historical causes, individual variance, and no clean villain."

This is where I wonder about giftedness.

Many gifted people seem unusually willing - or unable not - to spend more mental energy on complexity. Pattern detection, root-cause analysis, moral abstraction, long-range consequences, uncomfortable nuance: these often come more naturally. Not always, of course. Gifted people can be just as biased, ideological, arrogant, or emotionally reactive as anyone else. Intelligence does not equal wisdom.

But if a person has more cognitive capacity, better abstraction, or a stronger drive to understand difficult systems, they at least have _the potential_. Does that create a higher ethical obligation?

Not in the sense of superiority. Not "gifted people should rule." That would be its own failure mode.

More like: if you can see more of the board, are you more responsible for helping prevent bad moves?

A humanistic ethic would suggest that ability and responsibility are at least somewhat linked. If someone can understand more, mediate better, de-escalate conflict, resist simplistic blame, or build better solutions, maybe they do carry a larger share of responsibility for the common good.

But there is also a danger: turning giftedness into martyrdom. Nobody can "save the world" alone. And constantly feeling responsible for civilization is a fast path to burnout, cynicism, or grandiosity.

So maybe the better question is:

Do gifted people have a greater responsibility not to look away when they understand what is happening?

Does higher cognitive capacity imply higher moral responsibility - simply because we have the ability - or is that just another unfair burden placed on people who already overthink everything? One could also validly argue that everything behind that is, could be a random initialization based, chain of cause and effect of unknown length and thus there is no responsibility at all, accompanied by no hard rules on any morals. But in this case (it would legitimate murder), we would still end up in a world where we define a local moral codex in order to prevent suffering maximization (aka. Kant inversion). So even if we only rely on a local moral codex, we still try to enforce behavioural rules in order to increase collective well-being. With certain individuals being gifted, should or shouldn't they feel more responsible to at least try to have some positive impact here? After all, given the complexity of the issues we face as humanity, we probably shine as the candidates with the highest _potential_?

I'm sick of unnecessary "elves castle complexity"

Let me explain. In academics, we still cook with water. And everything we do, is actually pretty simple. Broken down to the atomic operations we execute, stuff is incredibly simple.

For example: Optimize a function for fast computation.

You watch how a number changes over time. Then you take a pen and when the number goes up you move the pen up the paper. And while time progresses, you steadily move right. Because you are drawing a nice line, and because you are creating a graphic, we call this a graph. Actually you will realize that you have drawn a line of curves. You slice the line into small step pieces now, by drawing a dot every few millimeters. This is fun - it's like connecting dots and remember, every dot has a number. You note down every number, one after another. So the numbers become a list.

Now instead of doing any magical voodoo with complex math, you take the number you wanted to put into some complicated function that is incredibly slow but also very precise before and instead... you multiply it with every number of the list you noted before. For every time you do it, you remember the last value you've got and you add the values up. In the end, when you have no numbers left in the list, the result is found.

This is similar to how we slice a banana. And eventually mix every piece of banana into a Joghurt. Adding the pieces up.

Do you know how we would call this simple operation in academia?

You will be splattered with terms like approximation, coefficient table, algebra, infinitesimal calculation, vector and even tensor math, higher order functions.... and what not.

But all it is, is simple *, +, - and / in a loop, sometimes with a few exceptions.

Yet we are building elves castles of all mighty complicated words, describing incredibly abstract and complicated processes, dis joining the practical approach from the concept and overcomplicating everything so that nobody gets why the heck anybody should read this crazy textbook explaining the logic of high dimensional vectors in euclidean space.

I'm really sick of this voodoo. Not because I don't get it. But because I think this is killing the joy of it, the vibe of learners and it actually doesn't even help -- the idea is that with definition and abstraction we would get clarity. Yet what we've got was complexity. Unnecessary complexity. And something tells me that all of this _also_ exists because it's incredibly helpful in being seen as the great genius who gets this complicated stuff. Oh yeah - we can translate voodoo down to the banana slicing it really is... Wow!

p.s.: Forgot to mention that some people in academia would spend felt like half of their lives debating the terms, how to use the terms right, if we should change the terms, and if so, how we should change the terms, and if there is ambiguity maybe. Or if we should abstract it further. If we could think of this completely from an inverse direction, changing all operators, but getting the same results... etc. pp. And then all in 20 years or so, somebody is born who is an actual genius. And he will be excluded from the elderly elves gang, so they rest in anonymity and a few years later somebody will stumble upon a few very smart ideas written by an anonymous genius sometime. And that will become big news.

Unpopular Opinion: If you are worried about prices, run efficient software

I know, I know, sometimes you can't really choose - but then charge your client or don't care because it's not your money/company.

But if you pay the bills and you own the decisions, then just don't run stupidly inefficient Software.

There is so much great OSS software out there that uses all cores, 1/10th of memory compared to industry standard and often is even more reliable -- especially if you reduce complexity to the scale you actually need (spoiler: You're not going to become Google overnight).

With 1/10th of bloat/waste resource consumption comes 1/10th of the bill.

Hi,

I simply wanted to reach out, asking this community about who would like to participate in a short 1:1 discussion on a new systems programming language that I've designed.

To give you a few hints:

- it is influenced by ideas of the 50s and 60s - like the PLEX data structure;

- it has some properties and guarantees of Rust, and adds on top of them;

- there is no optimizer, but only two-stage lowering (basically a 1:1 mapping, keeping the original intent as closely to what's actually going to happen at OpCode level, as possible)

- the syntax reminds you of Rust, C, TypeScript and Go, but it's kept intentionally simple;

- the first target arch is wasm32 (tested and working with Node.js and Webkit/WASM runtimes, WASI abstraction), but I'm already working on aarch64/arm64 and x64 will follow;

- the language comes with runtime abstractions that are designed for pareto-optimal efficiency/minimalism/functionality targets;

- I'm soon hitting my self-hosted compiler target/goal;

- Currently I'm implementing DOOM in this language after I've finished a Shell program (including VFS abstractions); the famebuffer and stdio runtime is already fully functional - on top of multicore execution (sync via Atomics and SharedArrayBuffer between Workers) and several other primitives;

I call this a HLA (high level assembler) design as it lowers from the high level syntax directly to ab ANM (Abstract Mnemonics) IR and from there it lowers to WAT/WASM (and for other archs, their respective pendants).

I've written this language because:

a) I love programming and I see this as the final assignment for calling myself a true programmer. I dreamed of this since my childhood, when I started coding 10yo. I turned 40 the other week and this was still on my bucket list.

b) I think this is an excellent language to teach people how the computer actually works. Both lowering layers export sourcemaps and DWARF is also already working. So you can learn what a function declaration actually means without the LLVM/or other compiler magic and what not.

c) I find modern programming is not much fun anymore. When I was young, back in the end of the 90s, you could learn about 80% of relevant APIs of a language by reading one book. And if you needed a feature, there was no library. You had to be creative! Nowadays you fight the complexity of the ecosystems, a ton of dependencies, their CVEs and since AI became popular, many programmers barely write code by hand anymore.

Well, if our craft is turning into a hobby - so be it! I still love it, and I wanted a language that gives me no headaches! Pure fun, efficient, simple and helpful for 80% of what most programmers need. You should be able to write programs without headaches and share them with everyone. That target is already reached because I target the web first and all programs already run on all OSes because of WASM. This is a shortcut I am aware of - the optimizer now hides behind the WASM runtime. But by bet is that even for other target archs, lowering directly won't cost the user much. Why? Because again, it's a HLA. You can write the ANMs (inline assembly) everywhere in between normal high level syntax. Why? Because we are only lowering. So all references (pointers) work in context perfectly where noted. You need a faster Algo? Learn to optimize your algo!

Example: You have a for loop over integers for matmul and you multiply them all by 8?

Yes, you've read that correctly - ANMs are noted as function calls. Why not.. ending the endless GNU vs NASM vs MASM flame war's..

I'm not yet ready to share everything on here, because I don't want to start a huge discussion without the ability to explain my ideas step-by-step... it also has a psychological component. I know that these things can turn into a shit storm quickly.. and so I want to protect myself a bit from it.

Instead, I would like to learn a lot about your feelings on such a language. I would like to hear your ideas, and think about them deeply!

The big plan is to OSS my work under MIT as I always do with my spare-time work since many years.

What do you wish for a new systems language to have and NOT to have?

Is there any concept you really miss?

Are there some "old experts" here who've built compilers maybe since the 60s or 70s? I would really love to hear from you! I'm very much interested in concepts that didn't survive the C moment.. that's why implemented the PLEX next to struct. PLEX keeps type info at runtime and thus allows for a kind of polymorphy at runtime - a very powerful concept that was disliked by Thompson and Richie.. however I think it was a bit emotionally debated and it's not so bad.. in fact I love it and I will demonstrate how powerful this is. I have generics without templates! And I can do dynamic switching over data type type at runtime while the function that processes the data is carried even as part of the PLEX that carries the data. You would think that's madness. But it turned out to be very intuitive!

(Reminds about FAT structs but it's much more powerful).

Anyways.. before I end up writing a book on this language... I hope you had an interesting read and that I didn't waste your time!

Just wanted to ask if that's realistic, maybe in the "outback" of Munich, like Holzkirchen, Dachau, Petershausen, Freising and alike?

It would just need to be around 65qm2 or a little more without obvious issues.

I'm doing well enough to afford it - it's just that it seems like sellers don't really go for realistic prices. I see 400k+ for flats in bad condition at the end of the universe. I'm really wondering if there is some kind of "secondary private market" where you could buy a flat from trustworthy private sellers.
