Z890 Thunderbolt 5 speeds defaulting to USB3.2 speeds randomly?

Z890 Creator Wifi motherboard here. I'm not sure if there's some buried BIOS setting but I'm using an Apple Thunderbolt 5 pro cable to my Areca 8050T5 raid, and it seems like there's an issue where the cable will default to about 660/780 mb write/feed speeds rather than it's rated 2800/3400 mb/s speeds.

If I unplug the cable and re-mount the RAID it will behave correctly, but it'll sometimes then LOSE that thunderbolt 5 speed.

Is there something I'm missing besides going with another cable (it behaves this way with 3 of the same cable make/models)? I know there's hardware IN the cable that negotiates speeds to some extent.

Thanks in advance!

Fire up the meme, boys... I get to see how Corsair's RMA process goes...

Less than 90 days old. System has been restarting randomly.

This is Pozzi. She’s 10 today. She only gets a steak once a year and I hope we can continue this tradition for many more.

LiquidHaus OFST cooler installed. All...the...velocity stacks!

I've been a big fan of John and Ellie's work at LiquidHaus and they just released their OFST cooler which cools the ram and VRMs (I noticed a 10-12c drop at idle/load) and uses two 80mm fans.

I've reached the point of diminishing returns on this Corsair 5000D Airflow and due to work I need to stuff another Astral 5090 in here (Blender rendering) so this PC will be going to them to get the full liquid cooling treatment...soon.

Buying a pair of AW3426DW's, has Dell gotten better with the screens showing up without marks on the displays?

I know my previous ultrawides had issues from shipping.

Yeah that’s gonna be a problem…

Whoever was working in the tire shop in May at the ford dealer when my raptor was in must have been having a really bad day because when I went to remove my wheels to do my brake pads in the rear I about blew out my asshole trying to undo the lugnuts. These are forged stainless steel nuts. I got all of them loosened except one. That sheared.

My impact gun with over 500 ftlbs of torque was literally just chattering not able to move these.

We’re gonna need to drill it out.

Dealer is going to pay for all the repairs and potentially a new wheel if it’s damaged in the process.

Anyways I hope your Tuesday is going better than mine.

Black and Brown with Velocity Stacks all over

Took the time to CAD up some velocity stacks for the intakes/exhausts. Likely doesn't improve performance but looks cool. 3D rendering // Motion Graphics workstation.

Some Velocity Stack Action

Designed and had printed (SLS PA12) velocity stacks inspired by Liquid Haus (front intakes, CPU radiator, and rear exhaust). Build is just waiting on LH's RAM cooler which will use 2x 80mm Noctua fans...and then likely the build gets gutted early fall to have him convert the whole thing to a custom case/open loop so I can fit a second 5090 in for 3D Rendering.

I love the LC1 but something bugged me…

That dang PWM cable… which on all of their fans looks properly loomed and heat shrunk. So a little bit of braided loom and some automotive heatshrink (6:1 with the glue liner is awesome) and it looks much tidier.

DC vs PWM fan hub? Worth upgrading?

My Corsair 5000D Airflow case included a DC 6x fan hub, which I'm using to control my front intake and top exhaust fans. I know PWM gives more granular control, but realistically is it worth upgrading to the Noctua fan hub?

Is there any performance gain or just leave the hub as is?

Noctua + Video Production

Did this mod a few years back but figured some of you would appreciate it. Sonnet thunderbolt 3 PCIE enclosure for my Black Magic Design Decklink Mini Monitor 4K card.

The cards built in 40mm fan shuffled off this mortal coil and the enclosures’ stock fan was truly annoying. So I machined off the original 40mm mount and milled a mount that would hold a noctua low profile 40mm fan. And installed a 60mm noctua for the enclosure. Because the enclosure only had 2 pin power I hooked it up to a Noctua PWM controller to make it whisper quiet.

A12x25 vs G2? Worth the upgrade?

For those of you lost in the Noctua sauce, are the G2 fans worth the upgrade over the previous A12x25s?

I’ll be upgrading my AIO to the Noctua 360mm, and I’ll likely do push/pull for that since it serves as an exhaust for my case.

I also have a 5090 Astral LC, which I’m using the A12x25s as intake fans pushing air through that GPUs 360mm radiator. Would it be worth it to upgrade those radiator fans or would the gains be negligible?

Swarfworks Switchpro Force 12 install… done

Finished this up today along with the force 12 wiring install. Paul at Swarfworks was awesome in working with me to build a straight panel mount for the previous gen raptors/f150s. I also sourced an overhead console that didn’t have the upfitters. Resulting in a really clean overall install!

Going water-cooled and need some advice...

My last workstation decided it didn't want to live on this planet anymore, and it was entirely AIO and air-cooled, and obviously this build (270K+, Asus Astral 5090, etc) are AIO cooled each.

This is a 3D animation and Motion Graphics workstation primarily.

The Astral for all it's price tag isn't as quiet as I was hoping (the AIO runs at 100 percent and doesn't sound great but it sounds like all the other Astrals).

I ordered a Bitspower water block for the GPU just to have so I'm in no rush to convert it to open loop but I will probably tackle it this summer.

I'm likely going to go with black soft tubing because I dig that industrial look and it's more forgiving for a first time build. Likely with gold EK fittings (I'm not jazzed about EK either, trust me).

My questions are:

  1. Should I do dual 360mm rads or do triple 360mm rads (top/side/front)?
  2. Suggestions on a pump/reservoir combo?
  3. CPU block? I'd like to avoid RGB if possible but I'm looking for the best build quality primarily.

Astral LC pump noise // RMA or live with it?

Just built a new workstation and went with the liquid cooled version. It's honestly an amazing card. But the very slight pump noise bugs me, enough to call it a deal breaker...that I don't know.

The question is it worth it to go through the RMA process and hope for a quieter card? How is the RMA process in general? I don't want to wait weeks to potentially end up with something worse.

This was purchased through Amazon.

So I'm upgrading my workstation after 5 years and am putting together a new PC. I went with the Asus Astral 5090 LC (I do a lot of 3D rendering for work in Blender and 3DS Max) so that has a fairly thick 360mm radiator. I'll be putting that on the top of the case exhausting the heat (currently I'm planning on a pull setup with the fans on the other side of the radiator for clearance issues).

CPU is a 270K Plus, with its intake on the side of the case. Front of the case is purely intake. With a Noctua in the back as exhaust.

This look okay or anything you'd change?
