“Suite Siblings” Zach & Cody looking for their forever home

These “suite” one-year-old brothers are looking for their forever home in the DMV! Zach (black & white) and Cody (black) are two very sweet, slightly shy kitties who are looking for their person to love and adopt them after moving in and out of several foster homes. These two are inseparable and are constantly sleeping together, rubbing up against each other, playing together, etc. They’re very calm cats and spend most of their time sleeping or window watching, though they do get the occasional nightly zoomies. If you’re interested in learning more about Zach & Cody, please feel free to message me or check out their adoption page!

Scammed out of BTS ticket

I’m not sure if this is the right place to post this, but I recently tried to purchase a ticket from someone who claimed their friend was no longer able to attend the BTS concert tonight. After I transferred the money over to them, they stopped responding to my messages and never sent over the ticket.

Does anyone know what I should do in this instance? Should I report them on Reddit? Is there a way to make sure other folks don’t get scammed by this user? Thanks for the advice!

Edit: Including their info so everyone knows to steer clear of them! Their Reddit username was ReekyBox though I think they’ve deleted their account, and their name was Ezequiel Reyes. We used Zelle so sadly I don’t think I’ll be getting my money back. But hopefully no one else gets scammed by this user!

Can you still adopt from Asian countries to US?

My husband and I are in the very early stages of adopting, as in we know we’d like to adopt a child in at least 2-3 years from now after saving up more money, and that we’d ideally like to adopt a child of Asian descent, either domestically or internationally. I should preface this by saying that I’m a Korean adoptee, as is my birth mother and adoptive mother. I’ve always dreamed of giving another little Korean kid a loving home through adoption, but would honestly just love to adopt a child from any Asian country or Asian ethnicity. This is because I know how difficult transracial adoptions can be (both my adoptive and bio mom were transracially adopted) so I would ideally like to adopt another Asian child since I know how impactful it was for me to have an adoptive mother of the same ethnicity while growing up.

All this to say, I know that many countries are in the process of (or have already) closed their doors to intercountry adoption, including South Korea and China. I was wondering if anyone knows of any Asian countries that still allow international adoption, and if so, what the process is like to adopt from these countries. If not, does anyone know how easy it is to adopt an Asian child domestically in the US? I’ve heard that there aren’t as many Asian babies available for adoption. Of course, my husband and I would just love to adopt a child in general, but if we can have a preference, we would really love to give a child of Asian descent a loving home with parents who look like them. Any insight or advice would be greatly appreciated!

Can you recommend me a new dystopian novel?

When I was a teenager, I used to love dystopian books, like The Hunger Games, Divergent, Delirium, The Maze Runner, etc. I feel like I haven’t seen many new dystopian books lately. Does anyone have any recommendations of newer adult dystopian books? Thanks in advance!

Edit: Adding that I’ve read 1984, Brave New World, The Handmaid’s Tale, Station Eleven, and a few other books people have recommended. I enjoyed all of these, and am definitely looking for more adult dystopian despite listing the YA books above. Those were just the first ones that popped into my head.

Wow thank you for all of these wonderful recommendations! I’ve added them all to my TBR list and am excited to get reading!

DC animal rescue in urgent need of cat foster parents

Hi all! I posted here a few weeks ago about my foster kitty needing a forever home and she received such positive comments that I thought I’d try again! The rescue that I work with, City Dogs City Kitties (CDCK), sent out an email that they’re in urgent need of fosters for seven incoming cats & kittens this Saturday or else they won’t be able to save these sweet fur babies. Even if you have a bathroom or some other small room you could temporarily house these kitties in, it would mean saving these animals’ lives! I can also attest that this is a wonderful organization and that they make the fostering process super easy!

AITAH for getting annoyed at my husband for taking so many naps?

I’ll preface this by saying that my husband (31M) starts work at 6AM, so he typically goes to bed around 8pm and wakes up at 4:30am every day, which I totally understand is very early. He also has the longer commute between the two of us (an hour each way), though I had that same commute for the past four years before we moved recently. In addition to getting around 8 hours of sleep a night, he usually comes home from work at 4pm and then takes a two hour nap, so that when I get home from work around 5:30pm, he’s still sleeping and the house is a mess, leaving me to start cleaning as soon as I get home. Since today is the weekend, he had the day off and slept in until 9am (after going to bed last night around 9pm). We ran a few errands this morning, and then we came home and he just took over a 3 hour nap. AITAH for getting mad that he sleeps so much, leaving me to take care of the majority of the chores and errands while he’s sleeping? One of his only chores used to be planning/cooking dinner while I typically do the dishes and laundry every day, as well as some general tidying up. But lately, he hasn’t been cooking since he’s been napping during dinner time, leaving me to find food for myself. We’ve also been talking about whether we want to have kids or not lately, and I guess I’m also getting upset because I’m imagining what life would be like with a child, and with how things are right now, it looks like I would be doing all of the chores and childcare while my husband is napping. Thoughts?

Edit: Some additional info…I don’t believe he’s sick or depressed. He’s been perpetually tired since I moved in with him 4 or 5 years ago. We used to live right by his work (only a 10 minute drive), and he would still come home and sleep for 2 hours or so. I’ve asked him multiple times to talk to his doctor since I think it’s abnormal to sleep this much and something might be up health wise, but he still hasn’t.

Meet my sweet foster cat, Norma!

Hi all! I’m not sure if this is allowed, so please feel free to remove my post if it’s not. But I’m currently fostering this sweet 2 year old cat, Norma, through City Dogs City Kitties. She is seven pounds of purrs, floof, and cuddles. Truly all she wants to do is curl up in your lap and quietly purr herself to sleep. If you’re looking for a chill, gentle family pet in the DMV, please look no further!

Is it worth it to tour the UN?

Touring the UN has been on my NYC bucket list for a while now, but my partner is rather indifferent to it. We only have space for a UN tour our first afternoon in NYC, but we would be cutting it close with the suggested arrival time (the website says to arrive an hour in advance).

I was wondering, for those who have toured it, do you think it was a worthwhile experience? Secondly, how long does it actually take to get through security? Will we need the full hour, or will we end up just waiting around if we show up that early? Thanks in advance!

How to take Staten Island Ferry to view Statue of Liberty?

My husband and I will be visiting NYC in a few weeks and we’re hoping to get a glimpse of the Statue of Liberty by taking the Staten Island Ferry. Neither of us have taken the ferry before, so I was just wondering if anyone has advice on how to get tickets, how long the trip would be essentially to see the Statue of Liberty and head back to Manhattan, etc. Thanks in advance!

Any BTS fans? Want to see them in Baltimore, but don’t want to go alone!

Hi all! I’m new to this subreddit, so hopefully this post is allowed. Basically, I’ve been going back and forth on whether I want to get tickets to see BTS in Baltimore, mainly because the concerts fall on a Monday and Tuesday (August 10 & 11) and in Baltimore, which isn’t ideal, as someone living in DC. My partner and friends aren’t BTS fans, and I’d rather not carpool to Baltimore and attend the show alone. If anyone is interested in potentially going to this concert together, please let me know!

Edit: if anyone is also currently going solo to the concert solo, but would like to sit with someone at the concert, let me know! I’m planning on buying a ticket soon, but I’d love to get to sit with someone so I’m not alone haha

My partner’s friend made these paintings - he wants to frame them

My partner’s best friend gifted him with these paintings for our wedding which was very kind of her; however, they’re really not my style or the style of our house, and I just don’t want to see these hanging up in our house. My partner just announced that he’s planning on getting them framed in oak this weekend and that he wants to hang them in our hallway (which has white walls and black tile). Again, I think it was a sweet gift, but I really do not like these paintings and I think they will look bad in the hallway (and framed in oak). What is your honest feedback? Am I overreacting?

Edit: Since most folks here are advising to let him hang them (which I understand) I also want to add context that he’s planning on framing and hanging four architectural photos he bought without asking me before purchasing and which I honestly don’t like. I tried to comprise and ask him to only frame the one that I was okay with, and he proceeded to tell me that he still plans to hang the rest of them. He’s also planning on buying new lamps for our office which I’m also not a fan of, and he’s picked out every major piece of furniture we’ve bought since moving to our new house, most of which I haven’t liked and felt coerced into “approving” him to buy. I’ve tried to tell him multiple times that I’m not a fan of his design choices and to see if we could compromise, but he’s set on doing what he wants. I guess these paintings were the last straw.

Is it possible to find my birth father? (Private domestic adoption, bio dad lives abroad)

I was adopted through private domestic adoption in the US and just recently re-connected with my birth mom by requesting my original birth certificate and discovering her name. While my birth father’s name wasn’t on the certificate, my birth mother shared his name with me and told me that he now lives in South Korea with his new family. I tried to search for him online and was only able to find an old Facebook profile that I don’t believe he uses. Does anyone know of any other way I could potentially track him down? I know people sometimes hire private investigators when searching for birth parents, but does that work if they live in a different country? The main motivation for me is that I really want access to my family medical history, especially now that my husband and I are talking about potentially having a child. Since my birth mom was adopted from Korea, she doesn’t have information on her family medical history. However, I know that my birth father is still connected to his family and would have this information. Any advice or insight would be greatly appreciated!

What style lamps would work well on our desks?

My husband and I have been going back and forth on what we want to do for the office lamps. I would love your advice on:

• matching lamps vs mixing styles

• one shared light in the middle or just on one desk, rather than a lamp on each desk

• lamp size (I want a smaller lamp so it doesn’t feel like it’s taking over my entire desk, and he wants the lamps to be 16” minimum height)

• chrome finish vs other options (I’m getting a little sick of chrome but I understand my husband’s desire to have the finishes all match)

For those who have reunited and told your adoptive parents, how did it go?

I reunited with my birth mom back in March, and just met her and her husband in-person for the first time last week. They’re both so sweet, and I’m really looking forward to continuing to grow our relationship (we speak weekly on the phone and are already planning a trip together)! The only thing is that I haven’t told my adoptive parents about any of this yet. I’m very nervous about how they will take it, especially my mom who tends to have a bit of anxiety and OCD, though I want to tell them. I’ve been sharing this news with everyone in my life except them which feels wrong. But I also know that my mom tends to overreact about things, and then will obsessively worry about said things.

For those who have reunited with your birth parents and told your adoptive parents, how did it go? How did you tell them? Would you recommend I tell my parents, or continue to shield them from this?

Husband and I want to adopt in 1-2 years - when to reach out to adoption agency?

Hi everyone! My husband and I want to adopt our first child (private domestic adoption) in the next couple years or so; however, we’ve heard that the adoption timeline can be excessively long. How early would you recommend reaching out to an adoption agency, knowing that we really wouldn’t be ready to adopt a child for at least a year (my husband finishes his grad program next spring, so ideally we’d like to wait till at least until then). I’ll also throw in that we know we still have to do research on ethical adoption agencies, we’ll need to do a home study, etc. But when would you recommend at least selecting our chosen adoption agency and beginning that relationship? Thank you in advance!

Edit: I also want to add that we’re located in the DC area, so if anyone has recommendations of adoption agencies to begin researching that service DC, please let us know! It would be greatly appreciated!

Meeting birth mom tomorrow - what to expect?

Hi all! My birth mom and I re-connected back in March and have been chatting on the phone weekly since then. This weekend, however, we’re finally meeting in-person for the first time. I honestly feel perfectly fine, and am mostly just excited to meet her, but I’m wondering what emotions and thoughts other adoptees experienced when meeting their bio parents in-person for the first time. Is there anything I should do to prep? Any big feelings I should expect tomorrow? Or does anyone have any anecdotes of first meetings they’d like to share? Thank you!

Should I tell my parents I’ve reconnected with bio mom?

If you’ve told your adoptive parents that you’ve reunited, how did they react? I’m planning on telling my parents this weekend (in-person) that I’ve reconnected with my birth mom recently, but I’m genuinely terrified of their reaction. However, I fear that if I don’t mention something now, they’ll find out some other way (e.g. see my birth mom on social media).

For additional context, my mom is prone to anxiety and has a bit of a temper and so over the years, I’ve learned to keep her out of the loop to avoid her overreacting or lashing out at me. My dad also always tells me to “not tell your mother” anything that will upset her and therefore lead her to start venting nonstop to him. So I’ve been really conditioned to just not tell her anything. But at the same time, I feel like I need to tell her this. Any thoughts?
