Question/ discussion on Children of Time series

Hello!

Reposting here as it may be a better fit.

I’m new to his work just finished the Children of Time series. I have something I want to discuss but no one in my life has read the books!!

Basically- what is the theme/ genre/ naming convention of the fourth book?

By my read, each book has its own sort of genre or theme that is connected to the names of the new creatures we meet on each planet.

For example, book 1 is Shakespeare - Portia, Bianca, Fabian, themes of politics, honor, betrayal, gender roles.

Book 2 is Biblical horror. We get Paul (maybe others? I can’t remember), and themes of world evisceration, omnipotent power, destruction, passion, emotion.

Book 3 is a Germanic fairy tale. We get the two crows, Gothi and Gethli, the woods, the witch, the wolf, the villagers.

Book 4 though… it seems closest to like Jurassic park to me, engineering nature, but I can’t figure out any name pattern or more than that.

I would love to hear any thoughts!!

My takeaway from all these wonderful pictures…..

Is that so many people need to get sleep studies to assess for sleep apnea!!!!!! It’s a pain to do and depending on location and insurance it might not be possible, but if you can afford and access it I can’t recommend it enough. My husband used to snore terribly and we both slept terribly as a result, and it’s SO much better since he got a CPAP. CPAP machines are small and have many different options for the part that goes over your mouth - and in the US, a pill for sleep apnea was recently approved!

Honestly, it is a huge quality of life improvement. If you or your partner snores, see a sleep specialist if you can!!!!

“You’re skinny again, good job!”

Said to me by a random fucking neighbor who I guess has seen me and my husband walking with our dog every day during my pregnancy and since giving birth. Oh sorry - not said, he actually SHOUTED it across the street to us. What the actual fuck is wrong with people??????

Wanna Stop Time by Caspar Babypants

Oh man. If you wanna have a good cry, give this song a listen. Probably not if you’re still in the newborn trenches, but hearing this with an 8 month old just made me burst into tears.

Suddenly painful latch on one side at 8 months??

Hello!

I have an 8 month old and I’ve been breastfeeding her since day 1. We’ve been lucky to have had 0 issues with breastfeeding, never had any pain of anything. I feed her most often in the glider in her nursery.

The past few days, even when I’m feeding in the same glider, her latch is SO painful but only when I feed from the right breast. The left side feels totally fine. And my right nipple feels totally fine when I’m not feeding her- it’s not sore or anything. But when I feed her on that side, it’s like I can feel her teeth scraping on my nipple and it’s just so uncomfortable.

I can’t really think of what to do because we’ve been breastfeeding for so long with no issues and nothing has changed! Does anyone have any ideas? It’s becoming that I don’t want to feed her on that side anymore because of the discomfort.

Help me with indoor activities for 8 month old!

I posted this over on r/parenting but figured I’d post here too. We’re in a heat wave, stuck inside, and baby is bored as hell with all my usual activities. Please give me all your weird and creative ideas!

ETA: We do typically spend lots of time out of the house, especially at the library, but I honestly do not even want to get in and out of the car because it’s so oppressively hot. So I am mainly looking for creative activities in the home!

Best resources for deciding on County Executive vote?

Hi!

I had a baby this year and as a result am way behind in educating myself about the upcoming election. I am familiar with the three main county exec candidates but I’m having a hard time pin pointing where they differ in policy and record. If you have a great resource on the candidates - voter guide, profile, news story, general insight- please share it with me! Thank you!

When is it okay to catch a feral cat who just had kittens to spay and release?

Hi all hoping to get some advice. My friend had a feral cat living under her back porch who had kittens maybe 1.5 months ago. My city has a spay and release program, and it is legal for cats to live outside.

However, she doesn’t want to separate the mom cat from her babies too early and possibly cause harm. So my question is, is there any guidance on timing for this? As soon as possible? Once babies are past nursing age? Looking for advice and resources, thanks!!

Flow just emotionally wrecked me

Oh my god. My husband and I put this movie on because it was a rainy day stuck inside with our baby and we thought it would be calm background for her since there’s no talking. I had no idea what I was getting into. I ended the night absolutely sobbing. It didn’t help that the cat in the movie looks and acts a lot like my own 13 year old cat!

What is it about this movie that makes it so emotional? Is it because the characters are animals instead of people? Is it the lack of dialogue?

That was a beautiful movie but I don’t think I will ever watch it again.

Why do you still have to put baby down on back once they can roll?

Hi, this is probably a super basic question but for my own sanity I just need to understand why this is unsafe!

So, from what I understand, once baby can roll on their own it is okay to leave them sleeping on their belly if they roll from their back onto belly during the night. But, until they are 1 year old, it is not safe to put them down on their belly at the start of the night, even if they can easily roll both directions.

So, basically my question is why? If they can get from back belly and vice versa easily and do so on their own during the night, why does it still matter which side they start on until they are 1?

Definitely not advocating for unsafe practices, just looking to understand! Thanks!

Can anyone else just not run anymore?

I’m 6 months post partum. I’ve never been a big runner, but I’m generally fit and could run if I wanted to. Now I try to run around the yard with my dog and it’s like I physically can’t? Like my bones and muscles just won’t do the motion or something. I end up doing like a half jog half fast walk. It’s not necessarily painful to run, I just… can’t??? Has anyone else experienced this?? I had an uncomplicated vaginal delivery and feel physically fine otherwise!

6 month old hunger cues but not hungry?

Hello! I’m hoping you all can help me with ideas to interpret something my 6 month old has been doing lately.

She is currently breast fed and eats some solids. She won’t eat from a bottle. Lately she keeps like launching herself at my leg, a pillow, my side, the couch, anything big and squishy and very clearly tries to nurse from it. Big open arms, burying her face, trying to latch.

Soo naturally I go to nurse her. But she will just like take one sip then throw her head back and give me a big smile. And then won’t nurse anymore! And she just keeps doing the fake nursing on other stuff.

I’ve tried giving her water and solids when she does it, but that doesn’t seem to be what she wants either. Any ideas????

Having a baby surprisingly improved some of my ADHD struggles

I wanted to share something I’ve been going through recently with this community. However, I think it’s important to start off with some caveats.

  1. I am on medication and in therapy, and have been so for over a decade. Both have helped me stabilize my life immensely.

  2. I have a great support network, which I am very grateful for. I am staying home full time currently with the baby.

  3. I am in no way saying that having a baby will help anyone with ADHD, and I am definitely NOT recommending that anyone decide to have a baby as a solution to any problem. I’m sharing my own personal experience because I think that many of us who want to have children, myself included, experience really high anxiety surrounding how ADHD will impact that choice.

Okay, I just felt like I needed to say that all first…. Now onto the point of the post.

I had a baby 6 months ago. It has been difficult in sort of all the typical ways you expect having a baby to be difficult. But, to my immense surprise, it has helped me significantly with doing things that I loathed and avoided at all costs before- mainly cleaning, cooking, and getting out of the house to run errands.

Why? Well, one thing I have learned about babies is that in these early months they are BORED and they are (in my opinion!) BORING!! And a bored baby lets you know she’s bored…. And toys only go so far. My baby wants to do things, see things, be involved, do something new constantly!!

Sooo when faced with the alternative of a crying or whining baby, every other task suddenly seems preferable. Avoiding dealing with a crying baby, or even just avoiding spending another hour holding little crinkle toys in front of a moderately amused baby, is maybe the strongest motivator I have ever experienced.

Suddenly unloading the dishwasher isn’t a chore, it’s entertainment for the baby. Grocery shopping isn’t an errand, it’s something that will take up 1.5 hours of baby watching time. Baby fussy at 2 pm? Why not entertain her by chopping up all the vegetables for dinner tonight. It’s 7am and I want to order McDonald’s for breakfast? Delivery isn’t gonna do shit for this baby, let’s make eggs and describe the whole process to her instead.

I think basically avoiding unhappy baby has created a constant urgency to my life that is actually kinda working for me? And bonus- I have a constant, rapt audience for all my little silly songs I sing throughout the day!

Anyways, that’s it. Just feeling kind of okay about life currently and wanted to share some success!

▲ 11 r/Cosmere

Okay so I’m pretty sure I have read the entire Cosmere. And there are two things, both from SLA, that I feel like I’m missing something.

  1. Who is Axies the Collector? Is he just from SLA? It seems like he’s from something else and just makes an appearance, but I never encountered him elsewhere.

  2. What’s happening with the woman in the interlude whose face is dissolving into smoke? I get (I think) that she’s going to the island Rysn visits in Dawnshard, but why is she disintegrating?

And also I guess 3, who is the woman (Azure? I think) who is hunting Zahel? Are we supposed to know more about her background/ motivations beyond what we learn in Stormlight?

Thank you!!!!!
