I wish I could archive all of the digital contents of 1990-2000

I just had this idea while listening to some music from 90s. How amazing it would be if I could archive the digital contents of 1990-2000. I don't think I have the space for it, but wouldn't it be amazing? All the major movies, tv series and music of these 11 years. I'm sure I already have a tiny portion of movies and series from these years. I doubt if I start doing it, I can complete it because even if all the contents are readily available, I do not have the storage, and backup storage required.

Maybe I can do one year at a time lol. Just had a filtered search on BHD, and there is like almost 400 movies that are available there which has a remux. Even if it is the same for all the years, it'll still be like 4000+ movies.

I think I'll just collect the jewels, not all, for now.

Dahua SSD, any idea if they are any good?

I've found this SSD on local marketplace: SSD-V800S1TB - Dahua MENA

for about $64 for 1TB. It is new, never been powered on. I have the option to test it out before I purchase. It is mainly for DVR it seems from the specs, and has a good write endurance of 930TB for 1TB drive.

Anyone tried or used this before? Should I go for it? TIA

My experience with reading data back from optical discs

TLDR: Make sure to have enough optical drives if you decide to back up on optical discs.

I've burned about 200 optical discs before I moved to another country and finally got around to get someone to bring them here for me. They were stored safely in 3 album type bags. There are about 20-30 CDs (CD-R and CD-RW), about 50-60 DVDs (mix of DVD+R, DVD-R and DL), and around 100+ BD discs (25GB and 50GB). All are quality discs, all BDs and DVD DLs are verbatim, some Memorex and some other brands of CD-Rs and RWs. My burner at that time was a Plextor and an Asus drive. They were burned about 16 years ago. All discs looked clean and new, no scratches.

I have one ASUS BD burner and tried to read the discs with it.

It succeeded in getting the files out of a few CDs, some DVDs, and 11 BD 25GB and 50GB discs.

Managed some more optical drives, three DVD burner, two BD burner (supports 100GB), and one asus BD burner (older model, only supports up to 50GB), and a Samsung bd burner portable type.

End result: Managed to get data from about 80 discs in total using all the drives. So, using eight optical drives, I managed to recover 40% of the data from 200 discs.

I'll try and get a few more optical drives to see if I can recover some more. A lot of old games, music and movies are on the discs that are no longer available on the web.

Does anyone hoard datasets from sciop.net?

The sciop.net has some interesting datasets, just wondering if anyone hoards any of the sets from them? They recently added some interesting ones including two 3TB+ of reddit archives.

I've just finished downloading the NARA Documerica Image archive and also got those Smithsonian datasets.

Need help choosing a 4K/6K monitor

My current ASUS ProArt is showing some shadow veiny marks on the screen, so it is time to start deciding which monitor I want to buy next. Unfortunately, PC components and monitors are expensive where I'm based, and these are some of the options that are available:

ViewSonic VP3256-4K $796

ASUS ProArt PA329CRV $892

ASUS ROG Strix XG32UCDS $1292

MSI MPG 322URX QD-OLED $1,464

ASUS ProArt PA32QCV $1572

My last post has some positive feedback about the ASUS 6K, but just checking if any of the other ones is a better buy. Any advise and user experience is much appreciated.

I'd like the monitor to last me a long time, so maybe OLED isn't a great idea? Please advise.

My use case: Movies, tv series mostly. I do a lot of archiving so almost always works with multi-windows. I rarely play games, so 60Hz is ok for me.

ASUS ProArt PA32QCV, looking for user experiences

My current PA329C is on its way out, there are veiny marks all over I might need to get another monitor soon. I found PA32QCV 6K monitor in a local shop, and wondering how good it is.

I'd like to get some honest feedback. My current monitor is HDR600 certified, so is the one I'm looking at. My main uses are watching HDR content and photography, and file archiving.

How good are the details and sharpness? How are the texts? Does the matte coating affect the quality? How good is the HDR? Do 4K contents looks bad because it scales to 6K on full screen?

Thank you very much in advance.

WD Gold 12TB strange behavior, any know how to make it work?

Ok, so bought a WD Gold 12TB drive about 6-7 years ago. I live in Asia, I bought it from UK, and had it shipped through a cargo who threw the box away, and delivered the HDD on its own, in a static bag. The drive didn't work, so I explicitly told them to not throw the box away, but they did so I never paid them. I never got around to throw it away either, it somehow didn't feel right.

The hard drive has a weird behavior. It will power up and then power down when I used it on a usb dock. I thought it was the power disable feature, but other HGST drive works with the dock, so I thought something else is wrong.

Recently, after the massive price hike that is going on, I decided to try it out. I used a power adapter that mitigates the power disable feature. Here are strange behaviors of the drive:

  1. It will stay powered on, as long as windows doesn't boot. As soon as windows boots, it spins down.

  2. I tried enabling hot plug in the bios, and connected the drive after windows boots up. It spins up, and then it clicks, but not the death click, a very continuous tick with exact same time gap, like a watch, but much faster. At the same time, a specific place of the PCB where a chip is soldiered, gets very hot to touch.

  3. Windows did detect the HDD model when I tried to safely remove the drive (it showed the drive model), but that is as far as I can go with the drive.

Can the drive be somehow a SED drive or something that it spins down as soon as it detects OS booting up? The drive is not dead, the vibration is very normal, no bad-drive clicks, nothing, but it just won't work.

I don't know if anyone have any similar experience. But now that the price is so high, it would be amazing if I could get the drive to work.

WD Gold. 12TB. Model: WD121KRYZ

Anyone having problem with Backup?

My whatsapp is set to backup daily to my gdrive, and for the last few days, it keeps showing backup in progress, but does not go away and does not complete backup. And I get a notification from samsung saying that one of the apps is using heavy resources and I need to restart. And the same thing again next day. The last successful backup was done on 31st July, nothing after that.

Anyone else having the same issue?

Is Archive.org the best place to upload 200+ BD discs?

I've been hoarding 200+ untouched BD discs (Indian movies) and want to upload them somewhere so people can get them. Tried a little with archive.org but didn't get the best upload speed (20mbps).

What is the best way to upload and share them? Most of them are not readily available, and very difficult to find these days. I might have to let some of these go to free up some space so it'd be nice to share them before that happens.

I gave up! 24 hours is not enough when it comes to digital spring cleaning!

I could not do it anymore. I've tried my best cleaning up, organizing, backing up stuff and tried empty up some space, but it was too much. I clean, I get a TB or two, and then after 2-3 days, it is full again. New stuff keeps coming out and I keep looking at my hard drives and I try to control myself, but then there are files that may not be available for long and I get frustrated.

So I gave up. Went through my torrent client and deleted a bunch of full discs and remuxes (kept a list for when hdd will become affordable again). Managed to clean up almost 7TB and started downloading some stuff. It was so difficult to delete them, but once done, I feel a lot better.

Is it as difficult for you too? I'm dealing with 102TB of linux isos 😭😭

YT is being more aggressive at saving space by reducing video bitrate

I downloaded a video last night, only to find out that I've previously downloaded the same video. When I went to check it, I saw that the older file has a bigger file size. I compared them and found that the bitrate is reduced (same VP9 codec).

A video which was 5.13GB in size when I downloaded it on 29th May, 2026 is now 4.52GB (30th June, 2026).

It seems that if I want to archive the best possible quality, I need to get them as soon as it is available on YT, or else they will probably re-encode it.

a quick check with "yt-dlp -F url" command didn't show any other files larger than the one 4.52GB.

Which tracker are you using for sports, mainly FIFA WC matches?

Looking for some FIFA WC matches and just wondering which trackers are the best. The ones I have don't have all the contents I want, so would very much like to know which ones everyone is using.

TIA.
