9 cgpa after first year but feel like i wasted it. seniors, need advice.

just finished first year with a 9 cgpa but i honestly feel like i wasted the whole year.
all i’ve learned is c, c++, basic python, html and css. i don’t know js, react, git, sql or dsa properly, and i barely did anything productive during the sem break either.
can any seniors from our university tell me what i should focus on in second year? dsa first or web dev? what roadmap did you follow? any clubs, hackathons or opportunities in college that are actually worth joining?
i’d really appreciate any advice because i don’t want to waste another year. thanks :)

Finished first year with 9.0 CGPA but I feel like I wasted it. Need a roadmap for second year.

I’m from a tier 2 college and just completed my first year with a 9.0 CGPA.
Academically I’m doing fine, but career-wise I honestly feel like I wasted my entire first year.
So far I’ve only learned:
C
C++
Basic Python
HTML
CSS
That’s pretty much it. I don’t know JavaScript, React, backend, DSA properly, Git, SQL, etc.
Looking back, I also had around a 2-month semester break, and I barely used it productively. Now I’m seeing people from my batch getting internships, Google Arcade Facilitator roles, research papers, and building projects, and I feel like I’m already behind.
I want to target good software internships and placements by the time I’m in 3rd/4th year.
Can seniors or anyone who’s been in a similar situation suggest a realistic roadmap for second year?
Some questions:
Should I focus on DSA first or web development?
What tech stack should I learn?
How many projects should I aim for?
When should I start applying for internships?
Any mistakes you wish you had avoided in second year?
Please be brutally honest. If I’m behind, tell me. I’d rather hear the truth and fix it now than realize it in final year.
Thanks! 🙏

this is the craziest recipe i’ve made. high protein creamy shirataki ramen 410 kcal 26g protein

been trying to make diet food that actually tastes good and i think this is the best thing i’ve made so far.
for the broth i blended paneer garlic ginger garlic paste soy sauce sriracha a little honey salt pepper and water until it turned smooth and creamy. you could also add a spoon of peanut butter if you want it even richer.
i sautéed onions green peppers yellow peppers garlic ginger and green chillies with just a few drops of oil then added the sauce and tossed in the shirataki noodles.
for the toppings i cooked broccoli baby corn red bell peppers and paneer in the same pan using the leftover sauce then finished the paneer with a little soy sauce and sriracha.
i also mixed maggi masala soy sauce sriracha ginger garlic paste sesame seeds and poured a few drops of hot oil over it before adding it to the bowl.
estimated macros
410 kcal
26g protein
22g carbs
24g fat
9g fibre
honestly this doesn’t even feel like diet food. the broth comes out thick and creamy the noodles soak up all the flavour and the veggies give it a nice crunch.

i accidentally made the best high protein vegetarian kebabs i’ve ever had

made these high protein rajma galouti kebabs today and ngl they turned out way better than i expected.
used:
boiled rajma
soya granules
paneer
sweet corn
greek yogurt
coriander
green chilli
spices
served them with pickled onions, a mint-coriander greek yogurt chutney, lemon wedges and some grilled pineapple that i lightly brushed with oil before charring over the flame.
the original goal was just to make something high protein and filling while staying relatively calorie conscious. i expected them to taste healthy. instead they actually tasted good.
the texture was soft inside with a nice crust outside. the grilled pineapple added a sweet smoky contrast that worked surprisingly well with the kebabs.
approx macros for the whole batch:
700-850 calories
50-60g protein
made 10 kebabs total.
recipe:
mash about 1 cup boiled rajma.
add 80g rehydrated and squeezed soya granules.
mix in 40g crumbled paneer, some sweet corn, 2-3 tbsp greek yogurt, chopped coriander, green chilli and your preferred spices.
shape into kebabs.
pan sear until browned on both sides.
grill pineapple slices over a flame or hot pan.
serve with pickled onions and greek yogurt chutney.
would definitely make these again.
any ideas for pushing the protein even higher without using protein powder? also curious what you’d rate the plating because this is probably the nicest thing i’ve cooked in a while.

A form of sexism that has become completely normalized in many Indian universities

I wanted to talk about something that rarely gets discussed outside India because most people simply assume it’s normal.
In many Indian universities male and female students are often subjected to completely different rules despite being adults.
Women frequently have earlier hostel curfews stricter attendance requirements stricter supervision and more restrictions on their movement compared to male students of the same age.
These aren’t high school students. These are legal adults.
The justification is almost always “safety.”
But what I find troubling is that the responsibility for safety is placed on women through restrictions rather than on institutions through better security and accountability.
Instead of asking why women might feel unsafe the solution often becomes limiting where women can go how late they can stay out and what freedoms they can exercise.
The result is a system where women are expected to give up autonomy in exchange for protection.
What makes this even more concerning is how normalized it has become.
Many students grow up believing this is simply how things work. Many parents support it. Many universities defend it. Even some women begin accepting it because they have never experienced anything different.
The restrictions themselves are only one part of the issue.
They often exist alongside a culture where women’s behavior is more heavily scrutinized. Their clothing friendships relationships and social lives receive far more attention and judgment than those of male students.
A man returning late to his dorm is often viewed as independent.
A woman doing the same thing may be viewed as irresponsible.
The underlying message is that adult women require supervision while adult men require freedom.
What frustrates me most is that these practices are often described as protective rather than discriminatory.
When unequal treatment is framed as care it becomes much harder to challenge.
I’m curious whether women from other countries have experienced similar policies in universities or whether this is something that feels particularly unusual from an international perspective.

srm has one of the most normalized sexism problems ive ever seen

every time someone talks about the different rules for girls and boys people instantly start saying “its for safety” and the conversation ends there
but can we actually talk about how weird some of this is
boys and girls pay the same fees study in the same classrooms give the same exams and get the same degree but somehow they dont get the same freedom
different hostel timings different restrictions different wardens and very different treatment
girls hostels feel way more controlled and strict while boys are treated like adults who can make their own decisions
and before someone says its for safety restricting girls is not the same thing as making them safe
instead of fixing security improving transport making the campus safer and holding people accountable the easiest solution is apparently to just put more restrictions on girls
then theres the culture around it
a guy can hang out with whoever he wants and nobody cares
a girl does the same thing and suddenly everyone has an opinion
people judge what girls wear who they talk to where they go and what time they come back
the amount of gossip and slut shaming that gets directed towards girls is honestly insane and most people dont even realise how normalised it has become
what makes it worse is that people defend all of this as if its completely normal
if the same rules existed in a workplace people would call it discrimination immediately
but because its a college everyone acts like its reasonable
and lets not even get started on how girls end up paying more for a lot of things while getting more restrictions in return
the entire system basically works on the idea that girls need to be controlled more than boys and somehow thats considered normal
a university is supposed to prepare people for adulthood not treat one gender like they need constant supervision
at some point srm needs to decide whether it wants to treat female students like adults or like school children because right now the double standards are impossible to ignore

Calling Out Freshers

why do they think they are tuff? LITERALLY THEY'LL BLAME YOU FOR NOT ANSWERING THEIR DOUBT WHICH HAS BEEN ANSWERWD LIKE 49TH TIME ON THE SUBREDDIT. THEY REALLY THINK THEY ARE TUFF SENIORS ARE NOT SOME CUSTOMER SERVICE 24*7 available for your doubts. you guys are acting as if You're the first batch to join srm.

u/meethapikachu — 2 months ago

Dear Freshers: The Search Bar Exists. Please Use It.

ik imma get a lot of hate for saying this but someone has to say it.

i genuinely don’t mind helping freshers. if you’ve seen my posts, you’ll know i’ve spent hours writing detailed megathreads covering pretty much everything a first year student is likely to ask. hostels, academics, improvement exams, branch-related doubts, campus life, registration, documents, attendance, hostel rules, what to expect in first year, and a lot more.

the entire reason those posts exist is so that you don’t have to wait around for answers.

but somehow every single day i still get the exact same dms.

“didi which hostel should i choose?”

“didi how is xyz branch?”

“didi how do improvement exams work?”

“didi can i change my room?”

“didi what laptop should i buy?”

“didi what is the hostel timing?”

“didi which hostel is nearest?”

“didi is my branch good?”

and half the time the answer is either already in the megathread or literally sitting in the comments section below it.

i completely understand that joining college can be overwhelming. i was a fresher once too. you’re entering a new city, new environment, new people, and naturally you’ll have a lot of questions.

but please understand it from the other side as well.

if a post specifically says “please don’t dm, ask in comments”, why are you still dming?

if the answer is already written in the post, why are you asking the exact same question again without even checking?

if the subreddit has dozens of posts on the topic, why are you waiting for someone to personally answer you within 2 minutes?

sometimes it genuinely feels like people aren’t even trying to search anymore. they see a post, skip reading it, skip the comments, skip the subreddit search bar, and immediately jump into dms.

the funniest part is when someone dms me a question that is answered word-for-word in the post they came from.

i’m not saying don’t ask questions.

i’m saying please spend 5 minutes reading first.

search the subreddit.

read the comments.

check the megathreads.

there’s a very high chance your question has already been answered multiple times.

and if after doing all that you still have a doubt, absolutely ask. that’s what the community is for.

but please stop treating everyone’s dms like a 24/7 customer support helpline.

the megathreads were made for your help. use them.

it’ll save your time and it’ll save everyone else’s sanity too.

at some point it stops being confusion and starts becoming pure spoonfeeding.

and before anyone gets offended, no, i’m not expecting freshers to know everything. nobody does.

what i am expecting is basic effort.

read the post.

read the comments.

use the search bar.

if after that you still have a doubt, ask away.

but some of you genuinely want every single thing handed to you without spending even 30 seconds looking for the answer yourself.

college is not school anymore. nobody is going to stand next to you and explain every tiny step one by one.

the amount of people who dm questions that are literally answered in the first few paragraphs of the megathread is honestly concerning.

sometimes i wonder how some of you managed to complete your board exams when the idea of reading a post longer than three lines seems impossible.

i made those megathreads so you wouldn’t have to wait for answers. if you’re going to ignore them completely and ask the same questions anyway, then what was the point of writing them in the first place?

SRM KTR FRESHERS 2026 MEGATHREAD | HOSTELS, ADMISSIONS, ACADEMICS, CAMPUS LIFE, PLACEMENTS & FAQ

hello everyone,
currently a second year student at srm and after spending enough time on this subreddit i’ve realised that every admission season the exact same questions start appearing again and again.

what hostel should i take?

how does hostel booking work?

what is netid?

what documents do i need?

how difficult are academics?

what should i study before joining?

how is the weather?

how are placements?

is there ragging?

how is campus life?

and honestly, most of these questions have already been answered dozens of times over the years. the problem is that people don’t search before posting.

so instead of answering the same questions repeatedly, i’ve decided to put everything in one place.

this thread is meant to be a complete guide for freshers joining srm ktr. i’ve tried covering almost everything ranging from hostels, admissions, academics, campus culture, weather, food, placements, clubs and common misconceptions.

i’ll also be attaching links to older posts made by me, moderators and other students wherever they’ve already explained something in greater detail.

before asking a question, please read the relevant section properly.

if after reading everything you still have a doubt that genuinely hasn’t been answered below, feel free to ask in the comments.

please do not dm me personally regarding hostel choices, admissions, academics or common doubts. ask in the comments so future students with the same question can find the answer too.

also if any seniors or moderators have useful posts that should be added here, let me know and i’ll update this thread.

Frequently Asked Questions
TL;DR

1. HOSTELS

the most asked topic on this subreddit every year.

for girls hostels i’ve already made a separate detailed post covering everything including freedom, wardens, restrictions, hygiene, hostel culture, room conditions and general experience.

please read that first.

during my first year the major girls hostels were:

meenakshi
m block
malligai
thamarai
senbagam
kalpana chawla

hostel allocations can change every year so your batch might be different.

which hostel should i choose?

if freedom is your priority

don’t join a hostel.

i’ve already made a separate post explaining why.

hostels come with attendance, restrictions, wardens and rules.

if complete freedom is your priority, consider flats instead.

if you want the most premium hostel

m block.

arguably the best infrastructure among girls hostels.

also the most expensive.

personally i don’t think the additional cost is fully justified but if money isn’t an issue, it’s probably your best option.

if distance from classes matters

meenakshi.

closest to UB where many first year classes happen.

also close to arch gate where most people collect parcels and food deliveries.

if you want comparatively lenient wardens

kalpana chawla.

still strict.

just slightly less strict than some others.

malligai and thamarai

mostly similar.

earlier boys hostels converted into girls hostels.

usually:

2 sharing
non ac
common washrooms

personally i lived there and wouldn’t recommend them unless you’re specifically looking for budget accommodation.

senbagam

not sure if freshers are still allotted here.

during my time:

3 sharing
non ac
common washrooms

2. HOSTEL FEES

another question asked every five minutes.

you will receive an official email with exact fee details.

however as a rough estimate keep anywhere between:

₹1.3 lakh to ₹3 lakh

depending on hostel, room type, occupancy and AC.

always trust the official fee circular over reddit comments.

3. HOSTEL BOOKING

hostel booking is basically a speed competition.

you’ll receive the booking portal link and timing through email.

when the portal opens:

keep your internet stable
keep payment methods ready
keep backup hostel options ready
log in before opening time
choose hostel
choose room
pay

done.

don’t spend 20 minutes comparing room numbers.

hostels disappear very quickly.

everything works on first come first serve.

4. ADMISSIONS & NETID

what is netid?

netid is basically your college identity.

think of it as your official college google account.

you’ll use it for:

accessing university emails
checking important announcements
joining clubs
accessing student portals
timetables
examinations
academic notices

it becomes your digital identity inside srm.

you can also use it on websites offering student discounts and student plans.

examples include:

GitHub Student Developer Pack
Notion Education
Canva Education
Figma Education
Autodesk Student License
JetBrains Student Pack

and many more.

5. 60% ELIGIBILITY CRITERIA

another very common question.

you need 60% aggregate in PCM.

chemistry can be replaced with certain approved subjects such as:

engineering graphics
computer science

depending on university guidelines.

however physics and mathematics cannot be replaced.

subjects like physical education are generally not considered.

always verify using official admission guidelines.

will they relax the criteria?

no.

don’t expect relaxation.

every year people ask.

every year the answer remains the same.

6. MANAGEMENT QUOTA, IMPROVEMENT & NIOS

does management quota exist?

officially there isn’t some magical office where you walk in and buy a seat.

you’ll find agents claiming they can get admissions.

some are genuine.

many are scammers.

be careful.

never pay random people without verification.

does srm accept improvement marks?

yes.

does srm accept nios?

yes.

however please email admissions directly for the latest procedure.

7. DOCUMENT VERIFICATION

there are usually two stages.

online verification

before hostel booking.

offline verification

after reporting to campus.

carry:

10th marksheet
12th marksheet
transfer certificate
migration certificate
aadhaar card
admission documents

and any additional documents mentioned in official emails.

after verification you’ll eventually receive your student ID card.

you’ll need it for libraries, examinations and campus access.

8. ACADEMICS

academics are probably the most overhyped thing freshers worry about.

truth is:

first year is much easier than jee.

seriously.

if you’ve survived jee preparation, first year academics won’t kill you.

subject combinations can vary.

different batches get different combinations.

for example:

semester 1

calculus
biology
pps
chemistry
mechanical engineering lab
foreign language
philosophy of engineering
nso/nss/ncc/yoga

semester 2

oodps
english
engineering graphics
environmental studies
calculus integration
eee
constitution of india
semiconductors/quantum physics

some details may change depending on batch.

9. WHAT SHOULD YOU STUDY BEFORE JOINING?

most people ask:

“what should i do during holidays?”

honestly?

enjoy your holidays.

you won’t get many long breaks later.

if you still want to learn something useful:

learn coding

PPS:

C
Python

OODPS:

C++

that’s literally the biggest headstart you can give yourself.

learn:

loops
arrays
functions
basic OOP
classes
inheritance

that’s enough.

you’ll thank yourself later.

10. CAMPUS LIFE

campus life depends entirely on you.

you can spend four years:

sitting inside your room
or
joining clubs
attending events
participating in competitions
making friends

srm is huge.

there’s always something happening.

if you’re bored, that’s usually a personal skill issue.

11. FOOD & MESS

i’ll be honest.

food is probably one of my biggest complaints.

some days it’s decent.

some days it’s genuinely disappointing.

mess complaints aren’t rare.

you’ll hear stories about:

insects
hygiene issues
poor quality food

some are exaggerated.

some are absolutely true.

as a north indian, i personally struggled with the food.

your experience may vary.

good alternatives:

subway
food courts
juice shops
swiggy
zomato
blinkit

i survived a significant portion of first year through food delivery and kettle cooking.

12. WEATHER

if you’re from:

jharkhand
north east
himachal
jammu
uttarakhand

prepare yourself.

chennai weather can be brutal.

the heat isn’t even the worst part.

it’s the humidity.

you’ll feel sticky all the time.

personally i strongly recommend AC rooms.

non AC is manageable from around august to december.

april and may are absolutely horrible.

13. FACULTY

faculty quality varies massively.

some professors are genuinely amazing.

some professors make you question reality.

you’ll get teachers who:

encourage students
help outside class
teach extremely well

and you’ll get teachers who:

are unnecessarily strict
love paperwork
make simple things complicated

overall most teaching happens in english.

many faculty members are from tamil nadu but there are north indian faculty members too.

14. DRUG CULTURE

yes.

it exists.

no.

it’s not breaking bad.

people asking whether everyone is doing cocaine and meth need to calm down.

what you’ll mostly hear about is:

smoking
alcohol
weed/hash

especially outside campus.

inside campus getting caught can lead to serious consequences.

simple solution:

don’t do stupid things.

15. RAGGING

personally?

i haven’t seen serious ragging.

most seniors i’ve interacted with were helpful.

if you face genuine harassment:

contact DSA.

Directorate of Student Affairs.

don’t stay silent.

16. NORTH VS SOUTH QUESTIONS

another favourite topic.

does discrimination exist?

sometimes.

from both sides.

i’ve seen north indians being racist.

i’ve seen south indians being racist.

neither side is innocent.

however these incidents are relatively uncommon.

most people don’t care where you’re from.

be respectful and you’ll usually receive respect back.

17. GYM & FITNESS

girls have gym facilities in certain hostels.

boys have plenty of gym options both inside and outside campus.

outside campus you’ll find many commercial gyms.

healthy eating remains the bigger challenge than working out.

18. FLATS & OFF CAMPUS LIVING

if freedom matters more than hostel convenience, consider flats.

i’ll attach a separate flats megathread here.

19. PLACEMENTS

i’m only in second year.

so i won’t pretend to be a placement expert.

instead i’ll link placement discussions by seniors and alumni.

placement thread:

https://www.reddit.com/r/SRMUNIVERSITY/s/nuR0Gia6Li

please refer to that.

20. CLUBS

join clubs.

seriously.

one of the easiest ways to:

make friends
build skills
improve your resume
escape hostel boredom

srm has clubs for almost everything.

design.

coding.

robotics.

photography.

media.

business.

mun.

dance.

music.

sports.

explore.

21. FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

is attendance strict?

yes.

should i buy books before joining?

no.

should i study entire first year syllabus before joining?

absolutely not.

is hostel booking stressful?

yes.

is AC worth it?

in my opinion, yes.

is ragging common?

not from what i’ve seen.

should i learn coding beforehand?

yes.

should i panic about academics?

no.

TL;DR

read official emails.
keep hostel money ready.
hostel booking is first come first serve.
netid is your college identity.
60% criteria is usually not relaxed.
learn basic coding if you’re bored.
academics are easier than jee.
AC hostel is worth it.
ragging isn’t a major issue from what i’ve seen.
food quality is inconsistent.
weather is hot and humid.
join clubs.
don’t believe every rumour you hear.
search the subreddit before posting.
ask doubts in comments, not DMs.

EDIT:Question:
How does management quota work in SRM?
Answer:
This is another very common doubt among applicants.
First of all, there is no officially advertised management quota system in SRM, as I have already mentioned in the post. However, there are certain senior professors, long-serving faculty members, and influential people within the university who may have enough standing to get a recommendation directly considered by the Director’s office.
From what I’ve seen and heard, the process usually works something like this:
You approach an admission consultancy or agent claiming they can arrange a seat.
They charge a substantial amount, often around ₹6 lakh or more.
They collect your marksheets and other admission-related documents.
The agent passes your details to a professor or senior university contact they are associated with.
That person forwards a recommendation to the Director’s office.
If the recommendation is accepted, the Director’s office may approve the admission.
After that, an assistant from the office may guide you through the remaining formalities such as creating a fresh admission portal account, restarting the admission process, verifying documents, and approving them on the spot.
You would still have to pay the regular college fees separately, as those are generally not included in the amount paid to the agent.
That being said, I am not encouraging anyone to go through such channels. Many agents are outright scammers who make false promises and take advantage of desperate students. I am also not claiming that every consultant operates this way. I am simply describing how these arrangements are generally said to work in cases where they are legitimate.
If you’re considering this route, exercise extreme caution and verify everything independently before making any payment.

Edit2: Question:
Do they accept improvement marks? If yes, what should I do and how should I submit them?
Answer:
Yes, SRM does accept improvement marks, but the process is not very clearly defined and admission cell responses can vary from case to case. From what I’ve seen in previous batches, you’ll most likely need to write an official email to the admission office explaining your situation and asking whether your improvement marks can be considered for eligibility verification.
If your improvement result is declared after admission, you may be asked to submit additional documents and complete some paperwork before your records are updated. The admission cell usually gives a generic response regarding eligibility requirements, so it’s better to get a written confirmation from them directly.
My suggestion would be:
Write an email to the admission office stating that you have appeared for improvement examinations.
Ask whether improvement marks are accepted for eligibility verification.
Ask what documents are required and whether they should be uploaded online or submitted physically.
Since these cases are often handled individually, don’t rely entirely on information from students online. Get an official response from the admission cell so you have clear written confirmation regarding your case.

Ama: Girls (answering as second year)

hello,

i’ve been getting a lot of dms about girls hostels lately. since most people seem to have similar doubts, i thought it’d be better to make a single discussion thread instead of replying individually.

if you’re joining srm this year and have questions about girls hostels, feel free to ask them below. i’ll also answer some of the most common questions i receive.

how do you make this kind of tracked glitchy effect?

i’m trying to recreate the look in this reel and i’m specifically interested in the subject treatment rather than the tracking.
the effect i’m trying to figure out is:
the blown out white glow around the subject
the black and white halftone/dot pattern
the blocky compression artifacts and flickering
the subtle glitching around edges and highlights
i’ve already tried threshold, posterize, glow and a few halftone effects, but my result still looks too clean compared to the reference.
the compression damage especially feels different from a typical glitch effect. it almost looks like low bitrate video artifacts mixed with displacement or datamoshing.
does anyone know what effects/plugins/workflows would get closer to this look?

Made these posters y'all

college exams got over and ive just been wasting time making posters for my hostel wall again 😭

started with making a few seedhe maut inspired edits for my room and then somehow my entire pinterest got filled with these gritty retro poster things. now im just making random custom ones for fun whenever i get bored.

lowkey curious what other peoples walls/setups look like so if youve got an artist movie photo or any random concept you think would look cool as a poster send it to me. ive been experimenting with tshirt graphics too lately.

attached some recent stuff i made.

i really like those gritty music poster type designs and old magazine/comic inspired edits so i started making custom ones for fun. made a few for my room and friends and now my wall is slowly turning into a seedhe maut shrine.

if your hostel room or desk setup feels empty and you want some weirdly specific poster around your favourite artist/movie/photo/inside joke send me references and ill try making something cool out of it.

also trying out tshirt graphics now because i lowkey want to see my own designs on actual clothes someday 😭

attached some of the stuff ive made recently.
