What else should I pay attention to while swapping major components?

I bought a pre-built mid range PC in 2020 and it reached the point where it doesn't fit minimum recs in newest games.

I still haven't decided if I want to just make light upgrades or commit to a full rebuild, but while I understand how to pick a motherboard, GPU, CPU etc. I have no idea about thinks like PSU or cooling. What should I look for when deciding on "secondary" components?

Anyway, here's my PC. Is it even worth upgrading on, or should I just tear the bandaid off and build a new one from scratch?

Motherboard: ASUS Prime B360 Plus (DDR4, Socket 1151)

GPU: GTX 1660 Super 6GB

CPU: i5-9400f

RAM: 16 GB DDR4

Anybody else struggling to actually roleplay in an RPG?

I always try to immerse myself. Don't sprint or drive recklessly unless the situation is urgent, don't use fast travel unless the distance is too great or there is too much backtracking, sleep at night even if game mechanics don't require it etc.

But recently I watched a video which talked about being a director of your own experience and it dawned on me that I'm playing RPGs quite passively. Exhaust all dialogue options for the sake of it, explore every inch for the sake of it. I add quests to the journal and proceed to do them like a checklist of stuff to complete. I can't recall the last time I actually thought "I don't think it makes sense to do this right now" and said no to a quest giver.

Any tips on overcoming the fear of missing out on content, XP, loot or whatever and taking ownership of the story being told?

In Bioware's hit game Dragon Age: The Veilguard (2024) Solas agrees to or is forced to act as a lock to hold the Veil in place. One might even say that he becomes The Veil Guard.

My small list of gripes with this great game

- why can I fully control the speed of my horse, but on foot I only have a choice between extremely slow walking (physically active men in their 30s' don't move like that) and running?

- why is this wider range of movement present but only in first person? In case you didn't know, first person camera enables you to jog while fully pushing the left stick and it's SIGNIFICANTLY faster than the same input in third person mode

- why is my movement restricted even further in camp? If I want to slowly walk around, touch the grass, eat a bowl of slop, chug some coffee and listen to birds I will do that, I don't need a game designer to control something as basic as moving for me

- why does looting bodies require a different input than looting containers?

- why is square/X used for blocking and circle/B for attacking in melee combat when in any modern game with melee combat square/X would be responsible for attacking and circle/B for dodging (so a defensive action)?

There might be some more that didn't come to mind, but notice how everything is related to controls

Why do we keep begging for remakes?

Why do we even need a remake? DA:O is unstable and has lots of technical issues, but the answer to that is an Enhanced Edition like what Baldur's Gate games got - console port, graphical upgrades, support for high resolutions, bug fixes, QOL and so on. What it doesn't need is to be remade and potentially delisted from stores by god knows what studio.

Who would even make that remake? Bioware? They don't have the resources and regardless of feelings on Veilguard they already proved they don't have that dawg in them anymore, it's a miracle Mass Effect 5 is even going. Maybe some other EA studio then. Would you trust them to faithfully remake a spiritual successor to Baldur's Gate without radical, misguided changes and adding AAA staples like action combat and open world?

Granted, remaking DA2 would have some merit even if no publisher would greenlight it. If you got David Gaider, Mark Laidlaw and the rest of the gang together, gave them resources and let them realize their vision for DA2 as it was without ridiculous deadlines, then it would be one of the few cases where a remake is warranted.

How do you feel, little transgender?

How do you feel about missing out on your childhood because of an accident of birth?

How do you feel about watching your body transform into something you hate?

How do you feel about being the only one not to go to prom because you couldn't bear being stuffed into an uncomfortable suit and watching your friends be beautiful and look like you never will?

How do you feel about feeling like a sex pest just for being attracted to women?

How do you feel about the fact that most women would never date you and the ones who would are likely to treat you like a fetish object?

How do you feel about feeling isolated and alone all the time because there's no one in your life who could relate to you?

uj/ there's no jerk im sorry i just needed to let it all out

Which game has the best and which has the worst Nightmare difficulty experience?

I played it in Inquisition and in Veilguard. Inquisition is... not great. There's not much more tactics in there than on Normal, the only difference is that fights take longer but don't get more engaging. If you like battles of attrition, it might be for you.

However making healthbars bigger works well for Veilguard. It gives an incentive to interact with gear, status effects, party composition and everything in between to squeeze out more damage. Combined with increased aggression, damage and tighter timings I think it's a challenging and satisfying experience, though some bosses feel like somebody added one zero too many to their health.

Which game had your favourite progression systems?

We discuss combat often enough, what about leveling, items and all that stuff?

For me it's Veilguard. I loved the huge skill tree, just missed attributes and allocating them, but I guess that ship has sailed in Inquisition. The loot is also nice, streamlined to be sure but enjoyable to collect and upgrade. There's so much of it between weapons, armour, amulets and rings that there really is something behind every waterfall. Thankfully they chose the approach with items having defined modifiers instead of a bastardized version of Diablo loot that most AAA RPGs take where it's all random stuff like "+2% damage on Tuesdays" and you constantly swap your gear out.

Veilguard is a game that I'm very fond of and a game that makes me feel sad every time I think about it

I beat it three times now, spent over 200 hours in it, more than in Origins and DA2 combined. I enjoyed all the time I spend with it (well, not all maybe). I met many amazing people thanks to it and I'll never say I hate it.

At the same time when I look from a distance I just see the heaps of missed potential, I'm reminded of the awful mismanagement the series went through and the sad note that it ended on. I don't even have the motivation to come back to the other games. Inquisition used to be my comfort game, I knew the dialogue by heart; I haven't so much as looked at it in two years. Maybe I will this summer, if I manage to get through my backlog first.

Tell me something about your recent Dragon Age playthroughs, fics you've been reading, art you've been making. I'd like some DA positivity here.

Was the discourse around DA2 around 2012-2013 quite as negative as Veilguard discourse is now?

For the record as someone who discovered the series in 2023, fell in love with it, preordered Veilguard and spent over 200 hours in it, I think DA2 is better. Sure, Veilguard feels better to play since it's got the AAA budget and polish, but DA2 has the soul that Veilguard unfortunately doesn't. But surely this isn't how it was seen when it was still fresh.

I don't think that Veilguard will have the same redemption arc for obvious reasons, but I still wish discussions about it weren't like this. Despite everything I still like this game and I was gutted to see how poorly it was received and how badly it flopped.

When will I have all tools to unlock all chests? Spoiler free as much as possible please

So far I have Atreus's magic and lightning arrows as well as Blades of Chaos. How many more items will I need to be able to go everywhere? Also, will the water level in the lake drop again?
