Labeled as Persian from Rescue— purebred or mix?

She was originally found in a hoarding situation and passed through two fosters before she was deemed “adoptable”. A year after adoption and very slow introductions and now she’s my little cuttle bug.

No papers of course, but curious if anyone would suspect purebred or mix. Her name is Moira Rose and she absolutely takes after her namesake.

Idk why this sat on my “want to cook” list for so long. So easy! So yum! Uses up so many tomatoes!

Blessed with a productive garden and sometimes it’s hard to use up and even give away all the produce.

Saved this one as a tomato harvest buster recipe. As I now have several pints of cherry/grape tomatoes hanging out on my kitchen counter, I finally made this for dinner.

Made exactly as is, no subs except I had the little pearl mozzarella to use up. Saved me a cutting step!

This was so easy after a long day at work. Hot damn. Thank you, Ali!

Sausage, egg, and cheese McMuffin dupe- my new breakfast obsession 264kcal

I love a good S, E & C McMuffin but those suckers are 480 calories and 90% of your daily cholesterol. Due to a recent dx of high lipoprotein A that greatly increases risk of plaque buildup in your arteries (here’s your sign to get tested— this number is purely genetic and never changes throughout your life. 1 in 5 people have the gene and you only need tested once!) my doctor put me on a statin despite having completely normal cholesterol levels. Gotta stay away from the real sausage now. Womp.

Trying to get as low in cal and cholesterol but high protein and fiber as possible. Currently using the Lewis Healthy Life 100cal English muffins (if you can find the Aunt Millie’s Carb Smart ones they’re 70cal and 11g of fiber. I’m really trying to find these in my area to increase the fiber by 5g and decrease calories by 30). Half and half mix of full egg and 99% egg whites egg beaters (save the other one for tomorrow!), reduced fat 2% Kraft singles, and Morning Star Vegan breakfast sausage (smashed down a bit in the pan as I find them a bit too thick/small). I’m normally not a huge fan of vegan sausage replacements but this is the best I’ve tried and absolutely gets me close enough to scratch that itch!

Edit: this also works well for you Traditional egg McMuffin lovers. I use the Jones Dairy Farm Canadian bacon at 20cal/slice.

WIEIAD: 1281kcal, 79g protein, 45g fiber, gift recipes and the sweet tooth of a 5 year old

Up to my eyeballs in garden goodies this time of year so trying to use up my tomatoes, cucumbers, basil etc while also getting enough protein. Heaven!

Recipes included:

Sheetpan eggs: 6 whole eggs, 6 servings of egg whites, 1/4cup skim milk, 1tsp mustard powder, 1/2tsp onion and garlic powders, s&p to taste. Pour onto a non-stick foil lined baking sheet and bake at 375F for 15-20 min. Cut into 12x 4” squares. I freeze these and pull them out to nuke for 30sec for quick breakfasts.

Spicy Cottage Cheese Pasta à la Vodka: only substitution is that I used what I had left of my CarbeDiem penne/rotini and halved the amount of EVOO.

Chickpea salad with grated tomato dressing: again, halved the EVOO and used a bunch of my snack tomatoes. The mahi was just seasoned with blackening spice and pan seared in a little EVOO.

Bonus Moira Rose jumped up in bed to share a bedtime snack and happened to snap the cutest blep!

Chickpea and Grated Tomato Salad (gift recipe)

‘Tis the season of plenty if you’re a vegetable gardener in the US! I’m up to my eyeballs in cucumber, tomato, squash, and basil and am always looking for ways to use it up.

Tried this NYT Cooking recipe for Chickpea and grated tomato salad (grating a tomato to use as the base of a dressing is genius!) and add a small 5oz portion of pan seared blackened mahi on the side. I’m on a cut right now and a small human so trying to keep it light but higher in protein.

Big fan of non-lettuce based salads especially with the supply issues right now. Enjoy!

Show me your pre-used Persians!

Besides the one I grew up with, I’ve only ever had rescue Persians. They certainly come with unknown health issues, past traumas, and weird habits, but they have so so much love to give. I’d love to see your rescue babies.

Control and Disease Groups from different data sets — how to separate batch from biology?

Hello! Late-stage cellular and molecular biologist grad student. I’ve learned a decent bit of bioinformatics analysis throughout grad school and analyze some of my own data, but do not consider myself a bioinformatician. For my transcriptomic analyses I collaborate with a team of amazing bioinformaticians and have learned so much from them.

As a part of my main project, my co PI recommended I perform RNAseq on a set of disease samples (completed). My PIs also recommended I pull the age/sex matched controls from a dataset we have access to from an NIH database. Both datasets were generated with very similar RNA isolation and library prep kits, and both on Illumina seq platforms.

As our control and disease datasets are from separate batches, doing a batch correction on the data would just remove all of the biology I want to investigate. Obviously how we handle the comparison is going to make or break this part of the project, and we have to get creative.

The one good thing that could be our saving grace is that we do have snRNA-seq data that matches the ages/sexes of both control and disease bulk RNA data. I was discussing with my collaborating bioinformaticians and was thinking we could possibly use the snRNA-seq database to somehow integrate the bulk RNA data better, but agreed we would think on it and circle back.

Obviously I can’t go back in time and actually sequence the control and disease data together, nor can I perform any additional seq with these samples because there is a moratorium on human prenatal postmortem tissue research in the US.

Has anyone dealt with similar analysis set up? How did you deal with it and what were any reviewer comments you found helpful? Thanks in advance 🙏🏼

The Queen of Low-cal Summer Dinners 👸🏽

Beefsteak tomato with Buratta, balsamic reduction, olive oil, basil, fresh cracked pepper and a sprinkle of flakey sea salt 🤤 Super satisfying dinner with a glass of wine, all for under 400kcal

EDIT: Cautionary tale. Don’t trust labels. Weigh your food. Don’t trust app calorie counts either. I was way under on the Buratta but way over on the tomato— so it ended up canceling out to still be under 400cal for the whole thing 😆 See comment below.

Sheet-pan Scallion Shrimp with Crispy Rice

Currently dealing with a glut of jalapeños from the garden and found this recipe. I don’t think I’ve seen it posted on here much before and wanted to share because it was so good!

This is more like a Tahdig than a fried rice dish, because you intentionally let the rice brown and get crispy. I whole heartedly disagree with the commenters saying to add peas, carrots, and egg like you’d expect with fried rice. It would be weird with the sauce flavors. Instead I added some chopped yellow onion I had left over in the fridge to my rice/oil/scallion mixture. The sauce of ginger, garlic, sesame oil, lime and jalapeno really makes it shine!

I did use this on 1 day old rice that had been in the fridge, so ymmv with my next comment— I only made half the recipe and my rice was almost burning after 15 minutes on the sheet pan. I think this might be one of those where you need to adjust your cooking time according to how many servings you’re preparing. For example, if I make a half recipe again, I’ll cut the time in half. Also found the comments about adding the scallions and oil to the rice while in a bowl, then spreading it on the pan helpful. Seemed way easier than trying to make it all happen on the sheet-pan.

Gift recipe! Enjoy!

Welp, vendor accidentally sent us 3x cases of Parafilm M…

…instead of 3x cases 5mL serological pipettes. Based on similar previous experiences, they’ll likely tell us to keep it. Besides giving some away, please give us your creative and/or unhinged ideas for 100 lifetimes worth of Parafilm M.

Artika 42’ Solar String Lights!

I saw these in warehouse a couple weeks ago and was really on the fence. We have a patio without electricity and have wanted some solar powered lights so that we can enjoy later evenings outside.

I pulled up the item on the app and saw that the reviews were less than great, with complaints about weird plastic wrap, horrible assembly, and poor connections. I decided to make the leap anyway, and kept my receipt in case I needed to return.

I think the manufacturer listened to the reviews and comments because the product is completely different than the pics and PITA descriptions others described.

It was super easy to install and puts out a great amount of light for a fully solar system. The 42’ length was perfect to wrap around the front and sides of our 12’x20’ pergola. The remote is a huge plus, as I mounted our solar panel near the top of the pergola. It has a huge range! For about $32 in warehouse, I think it was a great purchase and wanted to recommend for anyone on the fence due to previous bad reviews through Costco. I’m so glad I took the chance!

Soil in brand new beds has horrible drainage, but everything is planted already. Where to go from here—

Hello lovely veggie gardening community. I’ve been lurking here a while and very inspired by you all, and decided it was time to upgrade from grow bags on our patio. My partner and I built a raised bed veggie enclosure over the last couple of months (critters in our yard are out of control) and recently got everything up and running while we finish the final details like hanging the door and hardware cloth.

When it came time to order soil, I bought from a local trusted farmer’s co-op. I bought their special gardening mix which they state is, “a carefully balanced blend of topsoil, compost, and other organic amendments, designed to provide the perfect growing environment for your plants. This nutrient-rich mix offers superior moisture retention, improved aeration, and enhanced nutrient availability, making it an ideal choice for raised beds and vegetable gardens.” Sounded like the perfect choice.

After hauling 10 cubic yards of this stuff to our back beds, we planted our starts, sewed our seeds, and set up a timer-run drip irrigation system. Because the plantings were new, I started off by watering by hand for the first two to make sure our seeded areas stayed moist.

Unfortunately, even from my first watering I noticed the soil wasn’t draining very well. I chocked it up to being hydrophobic due to our stretch of unusually dry weather and figured it would improve with time. When I came back the next day, the top was an impermeable crusty layer of clay/silt. Next time I went to water it all just stayed on top of the crust, and every time it gets wet and dries back out again, the same thing happens. I’ve gone through with a garden tool and gently broke up the surface time and again, and it always happens. Even when the drip is on after pre-wetting the top layer of soil, it pools/puddles on top and gets that silty foam (see pic).

So, besides tossing some mulch on top to keep the top layer from drying out, what can I do now? I obviously need to amend the soil with something to lighten it up and improve drainage/aeration, but how do I do that now that all of my plants are in? What is the best thing to add in? Would adding some worms help? (the beds are open from the bottom to native soil, but they are 22” deep so it will take them a while to get to where my roots are). Do I just hope for the best and wait until next season? The soil feels so thick and dense. Even my super-clay ass native soil drains better than this.

So far most of the veggies seem to be doing ok, but my cucumbers don’t seem super happy and it takes a crazy amount of time to water them because I have to gently disturb the surface by hand each time.

I’d appreciate any and all advice on where to go from here 🙏🏼 Thanks in advance!

Moira won the tail floof-off… for now

Our squirrel baffle must have fallen recently and I woke up to this situation. Mo and the squirrel were having a tail floof-off, and it looks like Mo won rounds one 😆

Mo has these two, long tufts of fur growing out of her forehead and they are so ridiculous. Anyone else’s babies have this? What do you even call these things?!

My new favorite snack cheese 🤤

I’ve seen cheddars, mozz, and some other small snack pack cheeses, but this is the first I’ve seen that felt really unique. The tastes are blended and subtle, without one overpowering the rest, and the cheese crystals are divine. Highly recommend!!!!

ISO pet photographers who do cats, too!

Our sweet Squee is 19 now and has a lot health issues. Despite her ailments, they are all managed well, so she has a wonderful quality of life and is a very happy girl. Her favorite thing ever is to be outside on the patio with us on sunny days. Because of her age, we don’t know how many more summers we have with her. We have recently realized we don’t have any really nice family pics with her, and would love to have some taken in our backyard this spring/summer.

I searched the sub and only found recs for dog photogs specifically, and when I go to people’s sites they only mention dogs. Anyone have recommendations for pet photogs that will come on-site and also likes to work with kitties?
