Genre Savvy Tips for an Investigator

Spoilers. Please mark Mask Spoilers.

  1. Beware basements its very common for dark things in the earth to hide there.

  2. Its very common for a curse to be passed down over a family line.

  3. Eldritch things have to come from somewhere; either they are native to the area or someone brought them in. Keep this in kind. Rarely its a mixture of both. For this reason characters who do a lot of travelling especially to remote regions are subjects of interest.

  4. It's moderately common for people to use lovecraftian creatures to distill drugs.

  5. Very few things have an immunity to fire; moltov cocktails can come in handy when something appears bullet proof.

  6. Always be careful how you deploy your car as being able to use it to flee can be a matter of life and death. An ambush there or having it sabotaged can be fatal.

  7. Dont take rumors at face value (although dont dismiss them out of hand either) they often contain red herrings.

Any other ones to add?

Any ethical ways that can maximize my chances on this?

What I a 30 year old single man want more than anything right now is to kiss a girl in a month.

Why?

Its not that I'm a horny bastard (although that is true) so much as I'm going to have a major surgery in a month and theres a decent chance I'll never fully regain feeling in my lower mouth (being literally numb there for six months is guaranteed; roughly a 30 to 40% chance of it being permant according to the doc).

I just want one last kiss so I can remember what its like if worst comes to worst I can at least remember what it feels like (I havent kissed a girl in almost four years). My social circle is limited at best; bars and dating apps have failed utterly and the usual advice of hobbies hasn't panned out that well.

As a disclaimer (I think this should go without saying but we live in a world with Andrew Tate) I'm not owed anything; I can certainly understand why women wouldnt want to date me; I don't have the best social skills and I put on a few pounds when I spent two months bedridden.

I also dont like having to bring this up but for moral and practical reasons I'm not willing to consider prostitutes.

I'm desperate as hell (or more than usual at least).

What am I doing with my life?

This weekend I went to my friends wedding; Ive known him for the better part of two decades.

During this weekend:

I found out the groom had a bachelor party and didnt invite me. He and another person ignored my texts when i asked if there was one.

I found out that just about every old friend but me was picked as a groomsman; I was explicitly and verbally excluded from parts of the wedding over that which i made no objection too.

I get rejected twice; each time i slink away with my tail between my legs and respect their wishes. I know im not owed anything and its their prerogative; although id be lying if i said i wasnt disappointed. But thats my problem not theres.

I find out the one guy who seemed to sympathize for me about not being included did things i cant really defend such as calling the groom's grandfather a pedophile for no apparent reason, making a girl uncomfortable by insisting on kissing her hand....this is confirmed by multiple witnesses. Apparently this has been going on for months and somehow he was made a grooms man and invited to the bachelors party but not me.

Im pretty aware that even setting this weekend aside hes not really a good friend; but I considered it a massive insult to not attend his wedding. And somehow every other friend i have isnt that much better.

Tips for a Newbie

I'm very new at this game i heard it was easy so I tried a custom prison as I wanted a long game.

The problem is the prison is surrounded by water and walls and fences on three sides.

The fourth side and the one with land is where the guards have their break rooms, security stations, dog kennels etc. Theres like six to eight rooms with locks, heavy guard activity, and where I clearly am not allowed to be there.

To make things worse theres a contraband scanner in rhe only corrider that allows access to my cell making it genuially difficult to sneak stuff in and theres only a few hours ar night where i have free time.

Right now I'm doing favors for immates as I heard they can lead to unique escapes but I realized that may not apply in a custom map

Although I get beat up as many as four times a day so might not be a terrible idea to be more popular.

Why I like Richard more than Emily

As a disclaimer I'm only about 75% through season 1 so I'd appreciate spoilers.

Emily is emotionally neglectful but intrusive, manipulating, and has ZERO respect for boundaries and basic human decency.

Richard is emotionally neglectful as well but he doesn't usually feel the need to control Lorelei and if left to his own devices will just do his hobbies/work and let Lorelei do whatever. I'll grant you it's probably out of apathy more than anything but it's nonetheless vastly preferable to deal with someone who just wants to be left alone than someone constantly trying to control you.

Yes it is because Emily cares more but seeing how 99% of the time that caring leads to just as much emotional support as Richard but with gaslighting, manipulation, and constant rudeness mixed in I struggle to see that as a point in her favor.

Richard is arguably just as classist as she is but he does seem to have slightly more human decency than she does. For all his faults I can't see him just berating the poor hospital worker for doing her job like Emily did.

Why I picked the Suspect in the Studio Secretary Murder

What's difficult about this case is almost all of the information about the nights of the murder is from suspects who have an incentive to lie.

With that being said we can make out the following information from physical evidence and more impartial witnesses:

The victim was borderline homeless, had problems with alcohol, and had some form of a relationship (platonic or otherwise) with Mccaferry and Tieran.

In rhe morning she bought a thing of rye whiskey as a present for a boy: she was beaten with a tire iron and choked roughly around 0000 to 200; her body had a misogynistic slur I wont repeat carved into it and the letters "bd" (presumably aa a refrence to the black leliah killer; or him signing his work).

A letter beloning to the victim (and the other half found on the body), a male shirt soaked with blood, and a tire iron are found in Mcaffertys apartment.

Mccafferty (after several lies) admits the things were in his apartment but claims that because Tiernan came to him.and explained what he did; Mcafferty offered to dispose of the evidence.

After several lies Tiernan admits to being with the victim till approximently midnight till she left; he went to Mccaferies blackout drunk; Mcafferties showed him the evidence saud he came in with in; confessed to Mcafferty and admits its entirely possible he did it.

Both suspects lie their ass off; both run from the cops (admittingly Mcafferty doesnt the first time you talk with him).

Why Tiernan:

  1. The tire iron is more likely to be something he would use than Mcafferty.

  2. Mcafferry does raise a good point about how unliklely it would be that he wouls leave the evidence in plain view.

  3. They were fighting.

  4. He was at minium in very close proximity to the victim before she died.

  5. By his own admision its possible he did it.

Why Mccaferrty:

  1. Tiernans story mostly makes sense; his doesn't. They aren't shown to have a very close relationship so why would he risk a murder charge to help Tiernan? It could be his ideology of worker solidarity and sexism but its still a leap. He also didn't even dispose of the evidence so his story isn't even consistent.

  2. The evidence was in his apartment; yes he would have to be stupid to leave it there but he was dumb enough to lie to a homicide cop about his easily verifible criminal record.

  3. He does have a record of inflicting violence on woman for minor offenses which the victim did (knicking a book).

  4. A tire iron isnt that hard to find; and based on social class, manner of dress etc the shirt is more likely to be his.

  5. Tiernan while blackout drunk someone managing to beat her with a tire iron he probaly wouldn't have had on his person, choking her, then having the presence of mind to write a legible misogynistic slur and what is most likely a reference to a serial killer legibly into her torso with a branch is also a massive stretch (I do believe him when he said he was so drunk and angry he could have done it; he snaps at that point and its unlikely to help him based on what he knows). Maybe I can buy a guy drunk enough to blackout (and probaly can barely stand) to do the first two but the last one on top of that is just too much.

  6. We arent given any reason to assume Tiernan has unusually sexist views; Mccaferrty does. As such the carving is at minimum more likely to be Mccaferty; and his story doesn't place him near the actual body.

That being said they really should have checked the shirt to see who it belongs too based on size, dna etc and fingerprints on the letter/tire iron.

Based on the evidence presented I'd say what likely happened is she stormed out of Tiernans after some kind of fight; Tiernan drunk as a skunk pursued her but being that drunk didn't have much luck; she went to Mccaferty and told him what happened; annoyed with her petty theft and clingly nature he saw a chance to get rid of her and blame it on Tiernan; somehow got a tireiron beat and choked her; carved in the message and dragged her to the railroad and kept the items as a memento. Tiernan came to him and McCafferty saw the opportunity.

Off course thats not what happened but without the rest of the information from that desk it would check out.

Did anyone know about John Redcorn and Nancy before Joseph was born?

Ming and Khan weren't living in the neighborhood at the time; obviously Peggy didn't know.

They are not exactly subtle but I can't imagine they were this blatant when it started.

Hank can go either way he's not dumb but he can be pretty naive to this sort of thing.

Bill no idea.

Boomhaurer I don't know enough to say either way

Why Haley was Expelled

I think I'm in the minority when I say the school's decision makes perfect sense.

Why?

Yes a charge of underage drinking probaly wouldnt have gotten her a hearing or wouldnt even have been noticed. The charge of assualting a law enforcement officer; even if its less serious than it sounds is serious enough on paper to warrant a hearing though.

If she had just said I'm sorry I drank; I was scared and ran and it was an accident I feel om the cop would they have just given her a slap on the wrist? I don't know but probaly.

During the hearing however:

  1. She didn't recognize the person who sits next to her in class. It annoys one of the "judges" on a personal level which fairly or not does make them less likely to treat her lenialty but it does show she's probaly not paying attention in class.

  2. She says she missed more morning classes than shes been too. Explains number 1; also not taking her studies seriously. At this point shes probaly on this ice but its salvagable.

  3. She confesses to dating a teachers assistant x twice not knowing (and by extension caring) if it was against the rules. My college admin would have absolutely hated this; because among other things those guys often grade papers and it calls into question if the marks are fair/accurate. It's also a recipe for bad PR which adminstrators hate. Haley probaly got herself expelled at this point.

  4. Lying about something on her application (cut off before we can hear what it is). This could range from a borderline felony to nothing. They don't ask her to elaborate; either they have some reservation against self incrimation or they think they have enough (probaly both).

  5. Not knowing the mascot. It sounds petty but at most schools its genuinely hard not to know that; at mine theres literally a giant statue you pass by every day; there are posters; its on announcements for school games and just about all the schools marketing material....this shows next to zero particaption in campus life (or at least anything that relates to school) and just as importantly zero desire to be here. Her fate is sealed.

Each point is probaly survivable by itself but in congruence...

Why not use Fire?

One thing I wondered....

Okay you can't go in without an invitation.

Tricking them in letting you in was attempted but didnt really work (although they almost certainly could have done a better job)

You can't starve them out as you have to vamoose when the sun goes down.

Threatning outside targets (if anything they would have been better off not leaving so many vamps around a building with a handful of people and switching to a more lucrative and unaware place would have been a better option) was a viable plan but it took way to long to attempt/have it work.

They don't really have any qualms with using force to convert people and they dont seem to choked up about people dying resiting).

So why not just burn the bar down so no one can shelter inside or failing that just (literally) smoke them out.

The authorities are not going to believe them about vampires; and as the Klan was going to burn down the place anyways if it does attract cops it should be pretty easy to talk their way out (or even better turn law enforcement; its very unlikely the local law has the ability fo resist that many vamps; especially if taken by suprise and police under their control would be a god send.).

Maybe they wanted some shelter for when the sun came out but it was almost day break when they finally breached so persuasion and treachery werent the most time effective methods; and its mentioned there were other bars within walking distance they could have used.

Does it fit with the themes? Not really but I'm just wondering about the tactical reason. Is it a violation of the inviation rule!

Is it just me or does billing software always suck in call centers?

Ive only worked in two companies but both have had absolutely terrible user interfaces

As an example if a customer misses a payment on auto pay here's what we have to do:

  1. Get the policy paid up to within 30 days of todays date.

Get total bill for the year manually subtract auto pay discount; divide by 365 for fee per day then take equity date on online calculator see number of days between that and today; multiply by previous result.

Take a paymenf for x amount sometimes argue with customer; the payment line fails all the time so often they speak to two people and the process is obviously error prone so its not uncommon to have a different balance.

  1. Calculate what each bill is going forward.

You take the total balance left over for the year; subtract the auto pay discount, and payment from step 1. Ask them to confirm the autopsy date; pull up a table to see if the next payment will come out in this or next month them take a calendar and manually count the number of installments then divide by first figure in step 2.

  1. Inevitably explain or argue that the monthly balance is going up because they are setting up auto pay midterm so we have 9 or 12 payments.

If anything this is the ideal setup; it can get even more complicated and there are several other issues (which are more process design than software) which can make it worse. And if this doesnt sound bad you have to do this while making small talk or arguing

Is it like this for everyone else? Any reason why its so hard to get basic quality software.

Serious Question How Big is Propane in Texas IRL?

I'm from Arizona; we use it for barbeques but that's just about it; I've never heard of a propane home stove or using it to power/heat a home, nor have I heard of any person/business needing to have a propane subscription. Aside from gas stations and retailers.

But in King of the Hill all that stuff happens fairly regularly. Is that exaggerated for the show or does that actually happen in Texas?

US Army vs Dunwich Horror

While the Horror is definitely powerful; the US was able to pull up 4 million men just a few years earlier; and they had access to tanks, artillery etc....surely at some point someone is going to get lucky.

Lets say Professor Armitage doesn't step in and Uncle Sam has to deal with the monster alone; how far can it get before the military defeats it? 1928 US Army. If the military can put it down.

[Sinners] Would the bar have worked even if the company script wasn't a thing?

Im ommiting a huge spoiler from the end if the movie as well.

Stack says they have 500 bottles of irish beer.

That sounds pretty good; but there were several hundred people packed in opening night, and most people don't order one drink in a bar.

Okay they have more alcohol types, and the opening night is probably going to have more customers than average, but even so how long is that sustainable for? Its strongly implied they pissed off organized crime on both sides back in Chicago so its unlikely they have a steady source of more. Beer also needs to be refrigerated which I doubt is an option they have in a former mill in rural Mississippi (they could possibly set it up but not cheaply). Can they switch to corn whiskey? Sure but they put a fair bit of effort into marketing having fancy booze and its unlikely having to switch to a cheaper still will be without consequences .

They're also paying one employee alone the equivalent of 900s a night, and even if they weren't paid in company script I doubt the exploited black community has much spending money.

That and its technically illegal; usually the authorities didn't really care about speakeasies, but in the South the cops usually didn't need much of an excuse to go after racial minorities.

Which Ascenion Path Matches Each Lore Type?

I'm assuming one lore to each ascension path no duplicates.

Aspirant: Forge as they start out wanting to change.

Bright Young Thing: Grail seems to match a thrill seeking aristocrat.

Detective: Moth by elimination although not really a good match.

Physcian: Lantern; they seemed to have a knowledge focus.

The Dancer: One of the easier ones; Heart. To some extent moth but sticking to my rule Heart.

The Ghoul: Also easy; winter.

The Priest: All the dlcs are pretty easy. Knock.

Exile: The one exception to the dlc rule in that they arent almost tailor made for the lore but edge seems to be by far the best fit.

The Apostles: Dont count as can go either way.

Really that only leaves secret histories out but that makes a fair bit of sense as its not treated like a standard lore..

What do you guys think?

Real Life US Police vs a Sewer Goblin

Borderline literal shit post but what the hell.

The sewer goblin is on parolee for copper wire theft he is utterly insane and decides instead of following his parolee hes going to live in the sewers.

The sewers are:

  1. Known to the goblin like the back of his hand. Munical.maps exist but are often out of date.

  2. Filled with well sewage in several parts its required to wade through them, maybe even swim and it smells nausating. For some reason the goblin doesnt get deathly ill. He also doesnt care about the filth. Dogs are useless

  3. Pitch black; and the gases mean even flash lights arent of much use.

  4. The tunnels have an echoing effect that makes it almost impossible to discern where sound comes from; footsteps could be three feet behind you or five miles away. He can often be heard cackling or drunkenly singing 70s hits.

  5. Absolutely massive and under a mid sized american town.

  6. For obvious reasons the few sewer workers want nothing to do this with this guy and treat him like a phantom.

The goblin gets food and water by launching the occasional raid on the surface at night for a mcdonalds dumpster, pruno supplies etc. Hes smart enough to strike at different parts of town.

He wont use violence but he will run (or usually vanish into the shadows or appear as a figured draped in darkness then dispears to freak out the cops)

Round One: How much effort the police would realistically invest in this.

Round Two: A city wide manhunt.

My Arkham Campaign Framework

SO MANY SPOILERS!!!

This is my grand attempt to have an overarching backstory for as many classic Miskatontic county scenarios as possible; although I'll admit its not flawless and it.probaly does have a few holes in it; its designed to be flexible and explain why there is so much mythos stuff in one state; some of which presumably predates the college and witch trials.

The rough plot:

  1. A viking adventurer captures a copy of the necromicon during a raid in Iraq; upon reading it he goes mad and reads of a race of 'nereids" (deep ones) in modern Massachusetts and a cave sacred to another diety. He sails to the New World.

  2. The deep ones offer to show him and his crew immorality but conveniently doesnt elaborate on what it entails. He and his men are turned into ghouls as part of a ritual..I didnt ascribe a motivation for this as its unlikely the investigators would find this part out and they dont think like humans.

  3. The now ghouls live in modern day arkham creating a network of tunnels; the local tribes shun the site and the legend of the Wendigo is born.

  4. Centuries later when the puritan settlers arrive they find the perfect spot for a settlement with no native american tribes living in it; they foolishly ignore the warnings as mere superstition

  5. The ghouls see this as an all you can eat buffet and launch a massive raid; taken by suprise and fighting at night the puritans take massive casualties; they interpret this as the Wampanoag consorting with demons. While a great success the ghouls decide to never do this all at once again as it would cause the city to be depopulated and relocated; they prefer a more steady harvest.

  6. The puritans look for scapegoats and accuse social outcasts of consorting with the devil; several innocent Wampanoag are arrested and crucified. Kiezah Mazon at this point innocent is arrested when she speaks on their defense.

  7. Mazon makes her first escape from jail; the jailer is drunk and leaves the door unlocked. To cover up for his incompetence he claims she used magic to get out. Mazon is convicted of witchcraft in absentia, declared a fugitive and her daughter a kid is given to a prominent puritan family the hobbhouses

(One of the judges in the witch trial) to raise as their own; as her husband died in the first raid.

  1. Somehow Mazon falls in with the ghouls; and they take her in seeing her as a possible collabertor. She learns magic from them and starts to go insane; she converts to thesame god they worship (Narlato; an avatar of Nytharlthop; I dont call him this avatar the black man as it just sounds racist not eldritch).

  2. Several years later now an actual witch Mazon strolls into town and walks into her old house like nothing happened despite being a convicted witch. She builds her coven This is "tolerated" because anyone who speaks out against her vanishes in a flash of light in rhe night and/or their children get deathy ill overnight. Carl Stanford is her right hand man.

  3. Mazons tries to take custody of her daughter; now in her 20s and having pretty mixed feelings about this; while the Hobbhouses stood silent out of fear up until now this time they stand their ground; a fight breaks out and the daughter in the cross fire. Instead of pursuing immediate revenge and despite having the upper hand Mazon just leaves.

  4. Mazon makes a pact with Narlato/Nytharlopep to learn a spell to kill every first born in Arkham as revenge in exchange for her perpetual service

  5. Narlato betrays Mazon (for his own amusement) reaches out to the Hobbhouses tells them of Masons plan and offers every member of their bloodline immunity from said spell, and being immune from.any act of magic commited by Mazon and her covent..in exchange for sacrificing their first born. They take the deal.

  6. Emboldened the Hobbhouses crackdown on the Witch Cult; Mason is arrested and escaped from her cell into the angles of time to an unknown time...for real this time..Several of her followers flee west; others feign innocent with mixed results as its difficult to discern actions made from blackmail as opposed to from actual guilt.

  7. Stanford lying low for several decades founds the silver twilight society.

  8. Mazon lands Boston roughly around the civil war; and founds the chapel of completation. Sanford not willing to share power/territory with his old master eventually uses his connections to have the police raid the site after he refuses to work for her and she flees again to the angles of time.

  9. Mazon lands in the campaigns current year; the Hobbhouses have died out naturally and as such she can retrieve the papers and perform a ritual to kill all of Arkhams first borns and get her revenge...

The idea is she had three generations of her cult.

Generation one is from colonial days; its more or less become the silver twilight society and isnt really loyal to her. Stanford is the only member alive from colonial days.

Generation two is the generation from the chapel of contemplation. More or less inert although occasionally a member will show up to cause trouble.

Generation Three is the current one and is the most present threat; although they tend to work in the shadows.

Connections to Scenarios (in my play order)

  1. The haunting: the chapel of contemplation was her second cult; and Corbitt and Thomas her old lientants.

  2. Blackwater Creek: Blackwater and dunwhich were founded by survivors of her cult fleeing west (they heard of the cave in the necronimicon).

  3. Deadlight: The deadlight was her favorite attack dog; after the witch cult was broken up its box became owned by the Webbs.

  4. Crimson Letters: the papers the scenario focused on are the ritual to koll everyone in Arkham.

  5. Missed Dues: The preacher from that is the same one from the haunting; hes returned to town after hearing Mazon has returned (or really just inferring it from the chaos Mazon and the investigators are bound to have caused.

I need to be able to court martial my colonists

I get it living in a place with unsmoothed walls and stuff all over the ground isnt ideal thats why I assign tasks to you fix those things even if that time could be spent making sure you know we dont starve to death in the first winter or dont freeze in four degree weather without coats.

However the absolute bare minium should be if we're fighting for our lives against a hosile raid or stopping your team mate from bleeding out on the floor you dont throw a literal tantrum over not having a table.

I can only imagine what the actual army would do to a guy that decided to break priceless military equipment instead of you know keeping your buddies blood inside his body.

Why wasn't it pretty obvious who killed the Comedian [Comic]?

Whoever did this got the better of the comedian in a physical confrontation.

It's theoretically possible that a burglar got lucky....but very unlikely.

That leaves a handful of people who could have feasibly done this.

  1. Dr Manhatten. Not his style; could have faked evidence to look like a burglary but widely out of character for him and no known motive.

  2. Night Owl II: I have a really hard time seeing him beat the comedian in a fist fight; especially without his gadgets any motives require a few assumptions. Hes put on a few and out of pratice.

  3. Silk Spectre II: Has a motive but I also struggle to see her beat the Comedian; shes younger but hes much more experienced and easily has 60 pounds on her.

  4. Ozymandius: One of the only people on this list who I can easily see doing it; small motive in that 1) he got in a fight with the comedian years ago he seemed to take personally and 2) he met the guy.

  5. Rorscach: Actually a pretty viable suspect from the polices side; they don't know him enough (i think) to know he'd make excuses for the comedians behavior and a murder like this would not be out of character. I dont think Rorscach can beat the comedian but I give him 2/10 odds.

  6. Some communist operative: It's debatable if they have anyone who could do this on US soil and even if they did its also debatable if it would be a good use of resources; getting caught would be a disaster.

Pretty much everyone else is way too old and/or out of shape (Silk Specter I, Hollis Mason, Moloch), Hooded Justice has been mia for years and theres no clear reason why he would have appeared now (comedian probaly murdered him years ago).

From the cops side Rorscach is the best suspect, from Rorscachs side it should be Ozymandius as while the motive is pretty weak he's the only one of two who could and throwing some out the window is not Dr Ms style.

Granted with the fake assination it does make it harder for Nite Owl II but you still need a suspect who can beat up a guy built like a linebacker (even if hes getting old) with decades of experience in brawls.
