Can Lucy Steele read?

Does Elinor mean that Lucy Steele is literally illiterate and cannot read, or that she isn’t interested in reading and improving her mind?

England - Do I have to tell my employer that I’m pregnant?

Fixed term contract started June 2025 and currently ends September 2026. Due date is November 2026 so from my understanding I currently don’t need to tell them since my employment will end before due date. Part time work from home job so workplace adjustments etc not really relevant.

There’s the possibility my contract will be extended, likely until December 2026. However, if I tell them about the pregnancy, they’re unlikely to extend the contract, and I’d like the couple of months extra income. Contract extension probably won’t be offered until August.

Am I legally ok to keep quiet for now and then tell them in August once an extension has been confirmed? The timing would mean I’d probably end up telling them after the 15 weeks before due date deadline that you’re meant to tell them by normally, but I’m not sure how the fixed term contract + extension affects this as currently with contract ending before due date I don’t think I have to tell them at all!

I’m unsure whether they would be liable for paying me any maternity pay until December if contract extended and whether this affects the timing of when I should tell them.

edit: what I’m mainly wondering I think is if they’ll pay me maternity pay November-December if I haven’t told them by the 15-weeks-before-due-date deadline, because the deadline would only apply if I got a contract extension by which time the deadline would already be past 🤯

A name for my second boy

I’ve realised I’m sooo picky about boy names. I just don’t like most of them (or rather there are lots that are perfectly fine but I just don’t like them for my own use). It was a struggle to name my first boy and now I’m having another! Can anyone suggest names with a similar vibe to the ones I like?

I like: Benjamin (Ben), Laurence (Laurie)

Like but can’t use for whatever reason (already a family name etc): Sam, Tom, George, Alexander, Leo, Francis

Husband has no opinion other than it be a classic and respectable name so it’s mainly up to me 😂

Games with a campaign mode or different levels?

I’m not very creative and I really like just working towards a goal. Examples being each level on Minami Lane or the campaign mode on Zoo Tycoon 2 (if anyone remembers that) where you have to rehabilitate neglected animals and reach a certain donations goal, or breed 2 generations of chimps or something. Not sure if I’ve explained the vibe well enough there? I guess the vibe is campaign mode really

Chana masala chaat

Where can I find a really good one (that will deliver)? Used to order an amazing one a few years ago but forgotten where from. With the yoghurt and tamarind sauce on top 🤤

Games where you sift through information to solve the mystery. Looking for more of a focus on looking for clues/info/working out what happened - don’t enjoy complex puzzles

Have played and enjoyed:

  • The Roottrees are Dead - love the mechanic of reading through documents and searching for info
  • Return of the Obra Dinn
  • Curse of the Golden Idol
  • Chants of Sennaar - liked the language deciphering but not the puzzles
  • Her Story

Thanks for any suggestions! I basically just want to replay Roottrees and Obra Dinn but as you can kind of only play them once I’m looking for something else that will scratch that itch

My fantastic little boy turned 2 a couple pf months ago and has just recently started having some proper tantrums where he’ll start hitting me because he’s so upset. I say no and catch his arms but he’s in such a blind rage that this doesn’t stop him and just makes him angrier. How do you deal with hitting when it’s during a tantrum and they’re so angry that they aren’t able to listen to you? It’s new to me as he’s always been very chill up until now and I’m not sure how best to handle it. I try to practice respectful/authoritative parenting in general
