Love that the main cast are all still alive and kicking ❤️

Sorry for a morbid post! I was rewatching Buffy recently and it’s really sad to know that three of the main cast members have died. It made me think about all the shows I love whose main cast have started dying, and while I know that many Office stars have sadly passed (even Vikram!), I love that the main cast are all still alive and kicking, especially after Jenna’s diagnosis. I just thought I’d remind everyone, because I wish I appreciated it more when the whole main cast were alive while watching Buffy, because it makes such a difference. I think we should know how precious it is, because one day we’ll be watching and they won’t all still be with us. But for now they are (touch wood, I’m a little stitious).

Guess what episode came on TV tonight (pure coincidence)?

Had to share this creepy coincidence. Australian free-to-air TV has been playing SVU from season one every Sunday and Monday night, and I’ve been watching. It’s up to season two, and guess what episode came on TV tonight? S2 E11: Abuse, with Hayden Panettiere. I couldn’t believe it. It’s not deliberate, just completely random and coincidental (last night was E10 Consent).
RIP Hayden.

Recommendations for Goosebumps (original or GYG) books to read to kids (11 and 8) over Halloween!

So I introduced my niece (11) and nephew (8) to Goosebumps at the start of the year. It was too hot to go outside in Australia, so I read them a bunch of Goosebumps (they can both read well, but they prefer it if I read Goosebumps out loud). They loved Welcome to Camp Nightmare, Horror at Camp Jellyjam, and Werewolf of Fever Swamp, but weren't overly fond of Haunted Mask or Scarecrow Walks at Midnight (the latter of which we didn't finish because they thought it was boring). We have also done some GYG (Escape from the Carnival of Horrors, Dr Eek, Jungle of Doom, and Camp Run for Your Life, although we only did one ending for CRFYL because on their first go they got a great ending so they didn't want to 'ruin' it by doing another).

I'm wondering what book I should read next for them, particularly over Halloween. I'd like to try another run at Camp Run for Your Life, which is quite fun. I think a GYG book work well for Halloween, as it can be quicker depending on how many endings you want to do. I was thinking Night in Werewolf Woods, but the reviews online look pretty bad. My niece and nephew love a bit of action (like the camp books), but also a bit of atmosphere/mystery like Fever Swamp.

For the original books, I was thinking Attack of the Jack o Lanterns, but I think they'd find it a bit boring honestly. They would probably like Beast from the East better. They seem to be more into the adventurous books, which is why I'm thinking of trying another GYG.

Any recommendations?

Any experience with SkinSeoul?

I usually buy stuff from LilaBeauty, but a few products I like are out of stock there. I was looking at BeautyAmora, but then saw the product in stock at SkinSeoul. Has anyone here had any experience with them? I think I should be fine with customs fees as they now charge GST at checkout, but I just wanted to see if anyone could offer feedback about what they are like.

TIL that Mariska Hargitay was considered for the role of Miss Honey in Matilda (1996).

"Search service temporarily unavailable."

Has anybody else received this error message? I've tried searching up a book both on the desktop and on the downloaded app, and I keep getting an error message saying that the search service is temporarily unavailable. Is this happening just on my end?

How to travel interstate for a funeral if you can’t afford it?

My aunt’s husband just passed away suddenly. They’re arranging the funeral in Melbourne, and I’m planning to fly down from the Fraser Coast where I live. I was looking at flights and holy shit, for the next two weeks it’s roughly $500-$700 return with Jetstar! I could go to Asia for that amount of money!

Not going to the funeral would be really bad, as I’m close with my aunt, but I’m currently a casual who barely gets enough work as it is, so that amount of money for a return flight to Melbourne is just insane for me, and not something I can reasonably afford. I might be able to get some relatives to help out with covering a part time of the fare, but I’m just curious how people doing it even tougher than me cope when they have to go interstate. I know there are bereavement fares at Qantas, but even then I heard it’s not much more than 10%. Are there any other options?

Edit: Thank you so much for all your suggestions and condolences! I really appreciate it and it’s made things much easier to think through. Enjoy your weekends!

Got this for $20 (AUD) on eBay!

Chuffed that I finally got this for a reasonable price. Can’t wait to read it to my niece and nephew over Christmas, they love Goosebumps!

Aeon feels like intellectual fluff

Sorry if this is the wrong place to post this. I’ve been looking for philosophy magazines to read after years of being in academia and reading journals and getting bogged down in specialisation. I like Philosophy Now, but places like Aeon and even New Philosopher feel so airy and stylised and now just feel like intellectual fluff. Their articles don’t read like philosophy. Are there any decent alternatives? I’m looking for actual ideas, not ‘think pieces’ that feel self-indulgent.
