Do you think horror games sometimes lose personality when they chase ultra-realistic graphics too hard?

Do you think horror games sometimes lose personality when they chase ultra-realistic graphics too hard?

Don’t get me wrong: some modern horror games look absolutely stunning from a technical standpoint. But sometimes hyperrealism can also make games start to look very similar to one another visually. Many older or low-budget horror games had very distinct identities because they relied more on atmosphere, a unique art style, limitations, lighting, sound design and imagination than on mere realism...

What do you think? Does that make sense, or is it just me being nostalgic.

I’ve reached that strange stage of development where I’ve played my own game so many times that, honestly, I can no longer tell what feels intuitive and what doesn’t 😅

Hi everyone!

After working on the same project for so long, my brain has memorised every puzzle, every mechanic and every design decision... I’ve certainly stopped seeing my game the way a real player would.

That’s why I’m currently looking for testers for my project. Not just bug reports, but honest feedback from people experiencing the game with a fresh pair of eyes for the first time... 🙏🙏

I honestly believe that external playtesting is one of the most important parts of game development, and one that really puts you in your place.

I’m sure other developers here know exactly what I mean 😅

Sometimes, the best thing you can do for your game is simply to stop adding things to it.

Thats something I’m gradually learning during development...

New mechanics, additional systems, more content—it always seems as though the game is missing ‘just one more thing’ before launch. But there comes a point when adding more elements can start to harm the project rather than improve it. Features lead to bugs. More systems create balance issues, and more content always means more testing, more fixes and more exhaustion.

I think many indie games are never finished because we developers keep chasing the ‘perfect version’ instead of accepting that a complete game is already a great achievement... 🤷‍♂️

Retro-inspired RPG Maker horror game

Hi everyone!

I’m currently looking for people interested in testing a retro-style horror/mystery exploration game I’ve been developing in RPG Maker MZ. Playable in brower, the overall playtime is probably around 10–12 hours depending on how much you explore...

If anyone here enjoys retro-inspired horror experiences and would be interested in trying it or giving feedback let me know, I’d genuinely appreciate it.

Thanks a lot in advance 🙂

Games that explore the character's state of mind

I’ve always been interested in games in which the protagonist’s mental state can change, and this isn’t just part of the story, but something that actively influences the gameplay itself. It’s not just about ‘the character being sad’ in a narrative sense, but about games in which the protagonist’s psychological state changes, affecting gameplay, dialogue, and their perception of reality...

I find it particularly interesting when the player starts to doubt what is real, or when the mechanics themselves are linked to the character’s emotional or mental state.

Which games do you think have handled this concept particularly well?

What do you think was the most revolutionary role-playing game of its time?

Not necessarily the ‘best’ role-playing game ever created, but the one that truly marked a turning point for the genre when it was released.

For me, it was probably Baldur’s Gate II: Shadows of Amn.

At the time, it struck me as massive in every sense: the narrative, the interactions with companions, the quest design, the world-building, the freedom, the atmosphere... It really felt as though role-playing games had suddenly evolved into something far more immersive and ambitious. I think much of the design of modern role-playing games is still influenced by it today.

What’s your opinion on games made with RPG Maker?

Hi everyone!

I feel like the engine has a pretty divided reputation. Some players immediately associate it with low-effort or slop projects, but honestly it has produced some genuinely great indie games, especially in horror and story-driven genres. Personally I think a good game is a good game regardless of the engine used...

Do RPG Maker games interest you at all, or does the engine itself put you off?

Plugins to improve controller/gamepad compatibility

Does anyone know any good plugins to improve controller/gamepad compatibility for PlayStation or Xbox controllers?

I know MZ already has native controller support, but I’ve noticed some inconsistencies during testing depending on the controller or setup, especially with button mappings and menu behavior. I’m mainly looking for something stable and player-friendly before release, ideally with decent support for PS/Xbox prompts or rebinding if possible...

Any recommendations or plugins you’ve had good experiences with?

Players will always find the one bug you somehow never saw in hundreds of tests 😅

I’m currently in the testing phase of my game and it’s honestly amazing how quickly testers manage to break things I thought were completely safe. After months of development and replaying the same sections over and over, your brain just starts assuming players will behave the same way you do. They absolutely don’t.

Within minutes, someone will ignore the obvious path, interact with systems in a weird order, open menus at the worst possible moment or trigger combinations you never even considered. Frustrating sometimes, but also a good reminder of why external playtesting is so important. 😉
