Vermin lessons learned from gardening

Someone in a gardening group I’m in responded to my post about mice & squirrels digging in my garden. Maybe this can help folks here struggling with vermin in their compost piles

“These animals have very sensitive noses. They hate strong smells and avoid them.

I put down cotton balls soaked in peppermint oil around my garden. I use a peppermint spray on the walls of my raised beds (carefully avoiding spraying my plants themselves). I replace the cotton balls every few weeks, re-spray after every rain.

I think you could do this with many oils including cedar or eucalyptus or any strong scented oil.

Bonus: my garden always smells like mint without having to plant it!”

Maybe this could be helpful to you? If you’ve tried it, please report back!

What would you pair with this in the event of a chilly evening?
I’ll be wearing this with matching navy wide leg pants and suede, cream-colored wedge open toe heels.

I’m thinking about a cream cardigan?

Chimacum Granary Hiring a miller!!

This is a dynamic operation and this is a dynamic role! We provide training for many essential skills and functions related to grain milling, production and processing. Join us if you’re excited to learn, do many different things in a day, work hard and well with others, and make good food happen.

https://chimacumgrain.com/jobs

The position starts at 16-20 hours per week, with an hourly wage of $23-26/hr depending on experience. We do not provide health benefits.   PTO/sick leave offered per WA state guidelines.

****

My opinion: the lack of healthcare offered by the Granary is disappointing and unsurprising. This little company likely operates right at the edge of going out of business most months & is a labor of love.

I don’t work at the granary. I just heard that a local company has a job opening.

Job openings at Center Valley Animal Rescue

Job openings at Center Valley Animal Rescue!

Come join our fun, dynamic crew here at CVAR! We are currently hiring both animal care and office positions and can’t wait to integrate new team members.

Office adoption specialist -

Our Office Team plays a dynamic and rewarding role (we're not like other offices!) When we asked our staff what they love most about working here, the overwhelming answer was the opportunity to help animals find their forever homes!

Beyond facilitating adoptions, our office team is the first point of contact for our community. They answer a wide variety of phone calls and assist with everything from wildlife emergencies and spay/neuter clinic information to general animal care questions and community resources. (It keeps you very entertained!) Every day is different, making this the perfect position for someone who enjoys helping people, solving problems, and making a meaningful impact for animals and the community!! This position also requires multi tasking, and working in a sometimes loud and distracting environment.

Animal care - Our Animal Care Team has the opportunity to work with a wide variety of animals, including exotic, domestic, and farm animals. Every day brings something new! This is a hands on position that includes cleaning enclosures, preparing and feeding meals, and monitoring the health and well being of each animal in our care.

One of the most rewarding parts of this role is watching frightened or neglected animals learn to trust people again. Building those relationships and seeing an animal's confidence grow makes a lasting impact, not only on the animals, but on the people who care for them. This is the perfect position for someone who is compassionate, hardworking (not afraid to get dirty) and passionate about making a difference in the lives of animals!

If you’re interested in either of these positions and have experience working with animals, then please send in a cover letter and resume to the following email:

What is it like in Sonoma County, CA?

Hi everyone. I (M29) have lived in central New Jersey for my entire life. This is where my family is and I’m comfortable here, but I’ve been looking for a change. I enjoy the different seasons, the quiet suburbs, and easy to access to anything I can think of.

Recently I began interviewing for a job in Santa Rosa, CA. I can honestly say that I really want the job because I like the company, I’ve been following them for about 7 years, but the distance from NJ has been overwhelming to me. Since I don’t really know anything about Santa Rosa, Sonoma County, or California in general I was just hoping to get some insight about the area. Also, where do people sign up for tennis classes/clinics in Northern California?

Thank you!

Mosquitos in the greenhouse

Has anyone had luck with mosquito control in the greenhouse ?

Is this something you face regularly?

I’m contemplating putting in Venus fly traps and pitcher plants next year but I suspect they might not be as voracious as needed.

Last year I put all the spiders I found in the house out in the greenhouse and didn’t see many mosquitos. The purpose last year was aphids (which did not work).

We do have frogs but they’re not easy to catch and I’m not sure they’d thrive in the greenhouse.

LinkedIn and Indeed aren't the only options. Here are 400+ niche job boards sorted by industry

Big sites like LinkedIn and Indeed get so much traffic that every posting has hundreds of applicants within hours. Niche boards are the opposite: smaller audience, less competition, and often jobs that never get cross-posted anywhere else.

So I put together a list of 400+ of them, sorted by industry and niche. Some of the categories:

  • Industry-specific: agriculture, aviation, construction, gaming, cannabis, publishing, trucking, skilled trades
  • Community-focused: boards for women, veterans, LGBTQ+ folks, people with disabilities, Black and Hispanic professionals
  • Climate and green jobs (this section got surprisingly big, there are a lot of these now)
  • Remote-only boards, freelance platforms, startup and VC job boards
  • Government, nonprofit, higher ed, public health

https://docs.google.com/document/d/1b1k01i6KiamKnZfhlyT7hy5ZbaqwPc7DAbSt6mPLXA8/edit?usp=sharing

If your industry is missing or you know a board I skipped, comment and I'll add it.

LPT: if someone’s habits or personality is really grating to you: double check you don’t do what they do

Example: She’s never interested in anyone but herself.
I try to ask more questions of my friends & remember the answers.

Example: He’s always on his phone when he’s with the group.
I try to keep my phone in my pocket unless I’m alone.

Example: That couple bickers all the time in front of us.
I try to express my appreciation in front of our friends.

Trying to learn vicariously what I might be doing that’s just as irritating to others.
