In August Cineworld will be showing Casino, Shutter Island, The Wolf of Wall Street, The King of Comedy, Cape Fear, Raging Bull, Goodfellas and Taxi Driver.
Hopefully some of these fall in line with the pods.
Kelvingrove Bandstand, Saturday 26th
I know this has been posted to death but not everyday you meet a celebrity. Very hostile and aggressive, asked me for money to get to Nottingham of all places, squared up to me straight away before I even answered, tried to grab my phone ended up having to push him away and tell him to fuck off. Didn’t know there were already photos of him but almost telepathically knew it was him straight from the off. What a tramp!
This comes with a bit of a story behind it.
Back in August 2005 I was at the now long defunct venue The Glasgow Barfly to see Mr. David Viner.
This was back in the day when I’d turn up for doors no matter what gig it was and watch all the supports just incase there was a chance of some gold in the rough.
At this particular show the first support was a pretty forgettable The Music wannabe band called The Witness. All macho swagger and posturing to a room of 5 people including the bar staff.
The second support was a Scottish 2 piece called Frightened Rabbit. They played a pretty short set to a room of maybe 10 people, still including the bar staff and also now The Witness, but I was blown away. As soon as they’d packed up their gear and left the stage I was on them.
At the time I obviously had no idea who either of them were but I ended up chatting to Scott, gushing my heart out saying how incredible they were and asked if they had any merch I could buy. Scott laughed at that and said no but I could have some of the E.P.s they’d been giving out to A&R reps. He gave me 4 of these bad boys for free. These would be whittled down to the one I now have over time after handing the other 3 out to various people through the years.
The singer for The Witness also tried to get me to buy their E.p. for £5. I politely declined.
The years would pass and FRabbit would become one of those supports that I wondered what happened to them. Until 2008 swing around and the might TMOF crashed into my life, like most of us I can imagine, becoming my album of the year.
I’d then see them live at every opportunity I could, totalling 19 not including side projects.
In September 2012 I’d see a stripped back FRabbit perform and do a signing at Glasgow FOPP for the release of The Pedestrian Verse. I brought the E.p. along. What I didn’t realise was that the staff only wanted the band to sign the new album you’d bought in store that day. I got to the front of the queue and security asked to see what I had. I showed them the folded up, hand drawn, taped together piece of A4 paper and they said “No”. I tried to explain but they weren’t having any of it. Scott must of noticed something going on and asked to see what I’d brought. I handed it over and he genuinely looked a bit shocked asking where I’d got it. I stupidly just replied, “Mr.David Viner”, to which he replied, “Who’s he?”. I quickly filled him in and he laughed a bit, signed it telling the other guys just to sign even though they had nothing to do with it.
After his passing I got the charity pin and decided to get a buddy to put together this display.
I don’t really hold onto many physical possessions these days but this is something I’ll keep forever.
The track that made me fall in lust with HEALTH, just a shame every year they move further and further away from the early stuff in their live sets.
Not looking for any spoilers, just looking to vent a bit.
After discovering him around 5 years ago I’d now count Adrian as one of my favourite authors of all time.
I came across him in a sort of odd fashion after having Bear Head recommended to me on Kindle and seeing as it was free I thought why the hell not, having zero clue it was a sequel I still managed to thoroughly enjoy it and made following it up with Dogs of War a extremely fulfilling experience.
Between now and then I’ve been devouring his works in my own roundabout fashion and have finally landed on Cage of Souls.
At first I thought I was getting into a sort of Papillon situation, or maybe even a Count of Monte Cristo. But now that I’m just over the 50% mark I truly have zero clue where things are going. I seemed to have found my way into an odd mix of The Doomed City, the Shattered Sea trilogy, Hothouse and all by way of the City of Saints and Madmen.
I truly have no idea where it’s going but I’m here for the ride. Just slightly frustrated.
Just discovered a Portuguese band called MAQUINA. who I have become absolutely obsessed with.
Checked to see if they ever tour the UK, lo and behold they’d just played a basement venue in my city less than a month ago 😭
Worst feeling in the world.
Just a bit of a thought experiment and something I’ve always wondered.
Let’s say’s I came into a couple of mil through a lotto win or something, could I just pay one of my favourite artists to play a private show?
I know there’s some of the 1% out there that have had the likes of Lady Gaga, Drake and DJ Khaled play there weddings and birthdays. But how about if you offered someone like HEALTH, Les Savy Fav or TV on the Radio a decent chunk of change to play your local 200 capacity basement venue? Do people do this?
We’re so happy they allow us to share their home.
With an average rating of 1.4 between them who else on the horizon this year has what it takes to join these lofty ranks?
Hitting 40 it looks like a lack of time and motivation has really taken a toll on my ability to find new artists.
I’m going to eventually turn into my parents, listening to nothing but Paul Simon, The Beatles and Fleetwood Mac on repeat forever. Except for me it will be Death Grips, Radiohead and HEALTH.
