Minecraft server on a mint PC? things to be mindful of?

a few years ago I has set up a minecraft server on Ubuntu, and someone (no names!) asked if I could do it again

since I am playing with mint on my daily driver machine, I thought I'd try to set up the server on a mint box. is there anything I need to keep in mind?

still asking what minecraft the requester wants, if they wanna add a buncha mods, if I need to swap a different PC for a server

I have a handful of potato machines, including the old Ubuntu machine(which just had mint tossed on it), so if I need something with a little more oomph, I can swap up to a better potato.

can testing a new MKS-DLC32 fry a stepper motor?

I have an older engraver with a Eleksmaker clone that worked fine, but was missing some features like display and "head" and home switches

I picked up a MKS-DLC32 with a TS24 screen, got firmware tossed on it, tested it with some loose steppers I had and it appeared to work fine-ish, I could not test the home feature correctly without rigging up the home switches and having the stepper home against them

so, I disconnected ONE stepper from my laser engraver, connected the new controller, and it just chattered (low stepper current?). just to verify, I hooked the old controller back up but the stepper motor STILL chattered. did the new controller fry my old stepper motor? went back to the test stepper motors I used and they still appear to work right

USB C cable with all the adapters, help?

I have a number of legacy systems with all sorts of connectors. none of them are used often and most are missing their cables

I originally was going to get a SUB a-a cable and then an adapter set to match, BUT

I googled a bit and this is not advised
I am having a hard time finding adapter sets
the whole PD thing also add some confusion

am I correct in that I should get either USB-A to USB-C or USB-C to USB-C then adapters for USB C to whatever I need for the Devices?

I know I need at least USB-B, mini B and Micro B, and if I use USB-C to C cables I'll need USB-A

and how would I search for such a set? I am trying but never a complete set, or it'll be a USB-A to everything

storing passwords in a safe

I am currently the family IT guy. if anything happens to me a LOT of accounts are gonna sit idle.

not sure if this will be an issue, but I am trying to plan how to allow someone with only mild technical savvy to be able to retrieve passwords and what they are for (NAS, bank websites, managed network switches)

yes it is incredibly insecure, but I want to print them out and store them in a safe.

unless someone can convince me of a system that can be only accessed by a particular person, and will not be tied to an email, phone or some other way that might change in 5-10 years

connecting my trueNAS to my raspberry pi

I tried all sorts of variants of this and the search engines continually respond with "how to turn your raspberry pi into a NAS"

NO, I already HAVE a NAS, I want to get my raspberry Pi to access a folder on the NAS

very infuriating

cheap simple WIFI bridge? (not access point)

looking for models and brands and firmware specs if specific

(grumble)google keeps confusing wifi bridge with access point

also on a tight budget, and ebay can be an option.

I have a small shed that I'd like to set up a POE switch and a bunch of POE cameras on.

I already have the switch and cameras set up. I've done this before with a wifi router, but I need to do it again,. and all the wifi routers I have do not have the wifi bridge capability.

cannot export orcaslicer profiles for SV08 with co print, copying does not work either

I have a Sovol SV08 with Co-Print multi-filament that I want to moved the orcaslicer profiles from windows 10 to Linux mint

using the export tool on the windows OrcaSlicer to freeze (file > export > preset bundle >pick any radio button, popup disappears and is frozen unless I hit the ESC key)

copying the "user" folder (with the profiles) into the Linux machine folder "user" has the files copy over, but orcaslicer is not loading them. both are version 2.3.2

took me over a year trying to get the co-print functional enough to print, and dozens of iterations of configs, so I really would like to transfer rather than start over

swivel holes stripped, advice how to fix?

just a no-name vise. had for like forever, got from a tool truck sale before harbor freight was a thing

threads are stripped, whats' the best option besides "buy a new vise"? add threaded inserts, drill and re-tap? (not much meat left) make a new swivel ring?

when it broke I c-clamped the top to the bench but I'd like to get the swivel function back

automating software updates and making sure snapshot is working

holy smokes I am getting upgrade notifications twice a day or more.

when looking into updating automatically, it gives a warning to make sure snapshot is set up properly.

I do believe I have snapshot set up properly, but what is a good way to verify it is working properly?

you can have a really bad day if you have to restore from backups and find out the backups are not working right.

I am thinking of waiting a day, then try to rollback from a snapshot from the previous day.

is it really that easy to get a replacement key?

lock is from a 50+ year old Proto "flying lady" apron front toolbox

I was just going to order another lock, but when trying to identify it I got results for the exact key

is that a thing? just 4 characters on the face of a lock and I can get a working key for it?

I have been playing for 100 hours, just what the heck IS this game?

there's mining, there is crafting, put em together and what do ya got?

there is the full 3d version of the coin op arcade game asteroids

there is questing and factions like skyrim

there is building settlements like fallout 4

there is building your own custom ships like IDK, Kerbal space program?

not even sure what the trade goods matches up with, but it feels a lot like a BBS game I used to play called trade wars 2000

what other games are in here?

tools and equipment management ideas?

dad passed away a a year and a half ago. today I went into one of the sheds and did some cleaning and here's a list

Farmall C tractor
Cub Cadet lowboy tractor
two Tomos mopeds
one Bridgestone 50 sport motorcycle
three bicycles
4 wheel flatbed trailer
2 wheel flatbed trailer
12+ chainsaws
half dozen other devices using 3-8HP single cylinder gas engines
6 gas pushmowers
two cars (sold the 3rd)

most of these have air leaks, a lot of the engines wont start. some ran fine a few years ago

my questions is how do I maintain all these so they don't get into this condition again. do I get obsessed with calendars and do things like monthly schedules? use some type of app?

yes, he did have a bit of a hoarding problem, but I think there was more of a "you fix up X? I have a couple of broken X's you can have for parts" I have been and I will be reducing the overall "fleet" but I would still like advice for overall management of things like this

I am used to having one car and one lawnmower to take care of, and I have all my stuff also to play with, so at first glance it is overwhelming, but I am sure there is a solution

partial list, all the tractors have attachments, and when he was alive he had good reasons for most of the heavy equipment. tools are what I have been working on the past 1.5 years, and cleaning up the hoarding crap that was blocking the view of the rest of this

started mint about two weeks ago and I have a NAS and would like to explore backup options. pretty sure this has been discussed before, so links to previous threads that are valuable would be fine. person experiences and opinions with any options would also be highly encouraged.

EDIT: whole system backup. currently two drives, boot(NVME) and data drive(iron)

is there an online calculator that you can tell it 1/8x1-1/2 stock 16 inches long, twist it three times and the end length will be X?

same for tapers. say 1/2 inch square stock that I am gonna draw out to a point that is going to be 3 inches long

example: someone wants a hairpin made out of 1/4 square stock, and they want it 8 inches long with 6 twists and the tapered section 2-1/2 inches. how long should I cut the stock to make sure it doesn't get too short and I don't end up trimming off an inch.

if not a calculator, does anyone know the math for it?

Being recently unemployed and not wanting to look for work is exhausting

more free time to do things, like work on setting up a blacksmith forge. and I went hard today, 8 hours work while standing (I used to be a desktop computer jockey). tore apart a BBQ grill, welded up a tabletop for it to sit my forge on, and I just spend the last 1/2 hour messing with things, I got some metal red hot and even changed its shape, slightly.

ma is not thrilled, she still thinks I am 12 when I set fire to myself. she thinks that the area I am running the forge is not free enough of leaves (it isn't, leaf blower broke, repair parts arriving Saturday) and that my anvil bounces too much ( I agree, still cobbled up to test height)

but I did get to hammer hot metal.....

I got my Vevor furnace/forge and I have some coil springs, can I straighten out a coil spring this way? I have a hunch that I need to rig up a door(yes, I already have rigidizer and refractory on mine)

I see a lot of people tend to just cut off a loop or two when they know what they want and it is small, but say you want to try something longer like a spring fuller or butcher?

I think I could just cut my coil spring in half and then it would fit and then I can prop the furnace lid as a door as is suggested by some screenshots

SOLVED!

(why didn't I think of this)

I have BOXES of firebrick, I'll just make a brick tunnel to make the forge body LONGER, than I wouldn't have to cut anything

Credit to u/Puzzled-Bee6592 and his screenshot of a makeshift door
