So when I first looked at this game, I thought it was super weird that dudes like Saul Tarvitz had a model when he died so early in the Heresy. But after finishing the books, I’ve become so attached to so many dudes that I really wish they had models and rules regardless of lore.

I’m building Iron Warriors and it’s really weird to me that Barabas Dantioch and Kroeger don’t have models. And there are so many other dudes I loved from other factions (Lhorke, Arkhan Land + Monkey, basically every named Custode) that I’d buy them regardless.

We live in a world that 40K Ultramarines get a bajillion characters. HH armies shouldn’t be this starved.

Starting on some Custodes for HH. Wanting to do Dankanatois for at least a few. But eventually want to get Valdor and considering doing him and his retinue in the classic colors. Anybody have some pictures of a mixed chamber force so that I can see to confirm it won’t look dumb or out of place?

I was admittedly nervous going into this book given how much I hated Jude Reed’s last book, Fulgrim: The Perfect Son. I felt that book lacked any character, and specifically that Fulgrim could have been replaced with a generic daemon and it wouldn’t change a single thing that happened. So here, I was pleasantly surprised that Reed got the “soul” of the Armageddon wars right. Unfortunately, the way she reached that point was by this book being one big fat reference to other stories.

The opening third is dedicated to telling the story of a Major who is pretty much the K-Mart version of Yarrick. There are SO many intentional references to The Pyres of Armageddon and it is pretty much the exact same premise (officer butts heads with high command, sent to the front lines to die defending a doomed hive, but somehow organizes a competent resistance). From there the novel gets a bit less directly referential (at least in plot), but still, the most successful parts throughout are intentional references to other stories.

This book was totally readable. But I really have to question the existence of something that is built largely on referencing other works. In her introduction, Reed refers to it as “weaving new threads” across Armageddon’s people and history. But to me it just came off as 300 pages of something I’d seen done better before.

It’s been 6+ years and Asmodee/AMG has found a way to kill everything they’ve touched other than Legion and MCP, that are barely hanging on. But I’m sure the “tale” is still coming…

I’m totally not bitter….

I finished the Yarrick series and I’ve got to say, as much as the community likes to criticize Annandale, he is probably one of my favorite Black Library authors.

I think I feel this way because he might be the polar opposite Gav Thorpe (my least favorite author). Thorpe has these huge ideas that he completely fumbles the execution on. Whereas Annandale can create such deep character moments that you don’t really need to see any “big time stuff”.

Yarrick series is a great example of his style. You don’t really ever see the climax of these campaigns. Outside of his faceoff with Ugulhard, and his “conversation” with Ghaz, there’s not a ton of big moments. You see just early snippets of his wars. But you somehow get a better view of the character for it.

Other notable books by him:

The Guilliman Primarch novel sucks. A huge miss by him. But his Vulkan and Mortarion novels are WAY underrated and honestly I think are the best and most consistent takes on those characters.

The Damnation of Pythos absolutely slaps. Awesome book that leans into the horror aspect of the setting with creepy cults and Chaos Dinosaurs. It is wrongfully derided because it came out early in the Heresy where people just expected every book to be Primarchs punching eachother. But narratively vital since it reveals what happened to the Davinites and has huge implications for the Ruinstorm.

The YouTube “highlights” are awful since they don’t even show all the outs, and skip whole innings.

I love this league and want to follow it but they make it damn hard…

Needing a view from fellow dads that have seen the movie of whether this is something I’d have success taking my precocious/adorable 4 year old to. She’s generally good with live action (LOVES Wicked) and knows to be quiet during movies at the theater (actually shushes her mommy and I if we make any sound at all lol). The length itself is probably ok since we’ve gone to movies at the theater together about that long and been fine. But just want to make sure it’s something that will keep her attention and nothing that might be too scary for that age.

How many Rhinos is too many? I’ve got 3 squads of tacticals, and a squad of breachers (alongside some footslogging inductii). Is a Rhino for each of them overkill?

I like Rhinos, they’re neat. And I’m running Iron Warriors so pretty easy/cheap to put some shrapnel bolters on the roof so they do something useful after they deliver their dudes. But would be happy to drop one or two for more cool things elsewhere in the list if 4 is just overkill.

Building an Iron Warriors army for 30k and just theory crafting on thematic pairings. Obviously Thousand Sons would be an option there given Perturabo’s friendship with Magnus, and the Sons’ (minor) presence at Tallarn. But I’m not super familiar with 30k Sons.

Do you guys have any suggestions for building a small allied detachment with ya bois? I would definitely want to try to fit the Osirion in since it’s an awesome model and I’d have a Warsmith to help keep it alive. But beyond that really just looking for some complementary options to get a handful of red armour into my list.

Obviously I’d have shooting and line down with the IWs. And since Corvidae blessings won’t help with the rest of the army’s shooting, probably not something to build into. Maybe just a handful of support units to debuff the enemy?
