The vegetarian option at a catered party I just attended
Where have you been that has had worse driving than Boston?
I’ve heard a lot of shit talked about Boston’s drivers but imo Connecticut is way worse, particularly on 95, the closer you get to nyc. No one seems to use blinkers and they weave through traffic like maniacs.
Acadia national park precipice trail, Maine, USA
“Rising over 1,000 feet in 0.9 miles, the Precipice Trail requires physical and mental strength. It is a rugged, non-technical climb with open cliff faces and iron rungs. Upon reaching the summit of Champlain Mountain, climbers are rewarded with impressive views. It is not recommended for small children, for people with a fear of heights, or for anyone in wet weather. Descending the Precipice is dangerous and not advised.
Distance: 3.2 miles round trip
Terrain: Boulders, Granite stairs and slopes, iron rungs, sheer cliffs, rocky trails”
Best of luck everyone taking the test tomorrow, and I hope you get to bed at a reasonable hour
No better feeling than relaxing and having a beer when you know you should be studying for your exam in a couple days
What CFA exams used to look like before they moved to computer based
6 months of funemployment coming to an end
Got laid off about 6 months ago after working with the same guy (2 man team) for almost a decade because I asked for a raise a few weeks before he was told that his internal ranking had gone down for the FIRST TIME since we'd worked together.
And if he had told the director of our dept. that I had done well (I'd done 50+ initiations over the time we'd worked together, made almost all our written product, praise from a lot of senior leaders at the company for my work, never had a performance review below meets expectations, handled on my own what is normally done by 2-3 juniors at other firms, did literally thousands of hours of unpaid labor for him at our last firm where we worked together), while he did poorly in the last year, then it'd look bad for him. So he got me fired.
But it looks like I'm going to be getting an offer from a direct competitor to do basically the same work, covering the same space, but with a higher title, significantly higher pay, and more people on my level so I'll have less work. I'll also (hopefully) pass the cfa level 3 in a week and (hopefully) be a charterholder within a couple months. So things are looking up.
Plus because of gains on my investments, I actually have more money now than I did when I was laid off.
My only downside is that I wish I had a month between my test date and the start date so I could go on a proper vacation. Oh well. Could be worse. At least I took a month to ski at the beginning.
Fun reminder - allocation effect
Just a reminder - there are two allocation effect formulas
Classic Brinson Fachler (BF) Allocation Effect = (Pw - Bw) x (Ri - Rb)
Brinson-Hood-Beebower (BHB) Allocation effect = (Pw - Bw) x Ri
Ive seen these used in different places and referred to just as the allocation effect - not specifically by the model of allocation effect. Thanks so much CFAI for not standardizing this shit/only using one.
Anyone in Boston want to get dinner on me after CFA level 3 August 16?
For anyone in the Boston area who will have taken CFA level 3 August 13-17. Dinner at Grill 23, my treat. Either to celebrate or commiserate.
16 study days left, how is everyone feeling about their prep?
I’ve completed 5 full mocks (am+pm) so far with an average of 69% including my most recent 76% on a bill Campbell test which I’m happy about (his mocks have brought my average down a ton).
Going to complete another 2 (maybe 4 if I’m feeling it), do the cfai q bank, and review my 600 flashcards regularly until test day.
Hoping to be done with this shit in just over two weeks, feeling cautiously optimistic and preparing to go on some cool vacations to the Rockies and alps after. Plus I just got told I’m at the top of the list for a job that would be a bump up in title with a >50% raise from my last role.
How’s everyone feeling about their prep and prospects for after the test?
Do you ever find that you’re going through a first round of interviews and the interviewer is trying to find a reason to ding you?
Just talked to a large bank for a role. The impression I got was the woman interviewing me was just looking for a reason to cut me. I have a decade doing the specific work she was hiring for and it seemed like she was not only unwilling to budge or negotiate on anything but that she was asking all these things in order to cut me.
“What was your gpa?” Look lady I graduated college more than a decade ago and have been doing this work for a decade. I’m highly qualified. That’s not relevant.
“”You’re certainly qualified for a vice president level title but we here have very strict requirements on not hiring people at higher levels than what they were previously at”
“So you want to… finish studying for and taking the cfa level 3 in a couple weeks and then find a place in the area before you start? Am I getting that right?”
It’s frustrating working in finance.
What have your mock exam scores been so far? Whats your game plan until exam day?
I’ve done 4 cfai exams (either am or pm) and gotten as follows: 76%, 86%, 72%, 72%. Also did an am and pm of bill Campbell and got 70% and 79%.
Across my exams, I also have gotten the following scores by section:
Ethics: 88%
Derivatives: 46%
Portfolio construction: 90%
Asset allocation: 81%
Performance measurement: 79%
Private markets: 76%.
So derivatives is definitely dragging me down, and to a lesser extent private markets which is surprising since I thought I was doing well on that (a lot of the bond stuff and derivatives stuff involved in it is dragging me down). Plan is to do another 5 full/10 half exams between bc and mm, review my stack of 5-600 flashcards regularly, and do the cfai q bank (did schwesers book of questions and those in the written material of the schweser books already).
Thoughts are appreciated. I’d rather eat my own guts than do this exam again.
What hobbies are you looking to focus more on when you pass level 3?
I'm going to work out more, hike a lot more, never feel guilty about skiing, and I recently joined my towns finance committee.
My piles of flashcards for studying - left is those which I'm still forcing into my brain, right is the ones I've forced in. Calculator for scale.
Think I found the worst prices - $499 for each weller except at ($99). $59 for bt, $69 for er, 899 for stagg jr, and more. Portside liquor, Harwich.
Has anyone actually successfully negotiated with a liquor store for a bottle?
I’ve offered maybe a half dozen places recently $400 for a gts or $300 for a thh, or similar, and none have wanted to budge at all. Has anyone had any different experiences? They all seem to want to hold onto their bottles for $900-$1200.
If anyone wants Blantons gold, there have been 6 sitting around for a few days now at the Hyannis kappys for $199
I’d buy one if it was $80
