Best possible neck and middle pickups - money no object

If you could get any (new) pickups for an HSS strat what would you get? In my bridge I have a Lollar Imperial F Spaced with a pearl cover and a gold pickguard on an Olympic white body. It’s a partscaster already with a maple gloss warmoth neck. Looks don’t really matter that much just throwing in details for vibe. I want my guitar to cover every musical base possible. I play mostly rock and blues with a touch of every other genre like country and funk.

I also have an LP with a ‘59 neck and Full Shred bridge for heavier stuff. Honestly I don’t even know what to think of in terms of what a vintage strat sound means but it’s a great guitar and I use it for almost everything that isn’t metal or punk.

Buzzing - ground issue, shielding, or something else?

I recently rebuilt a guitar. I had some issues with buzzing that I fixed once I wired everything correctly and redid the ground connection. No buzz or minimal.

Last night I took all of the hardware off except the neck and the bushings because after settling I wanted to repolish the clear coat.

Now I have put it back together and there is absolutely horrible buzzing when I am not touching any metal part. Usually I’d say this is normal and just EMI.

However, this problem didn’t exist before putting everything back together. I’ve checked every single solder point and pickup connections which are into a screwport solderless system.

The only thing I haven’t checked is the bridge ground because it’s underneath the bushings and I don’t want to pop them out. However, when I touch only the bridge the buzzing goes away so I can rule that out.

The only other clue I can find is that when I turn the tone knob to zero it goes away. What gives?

Do you use quality body wood if finishing in color?

Discussion of tone is dead horse so not trying to stir that up, just curious on what people actually do. I just completed a first (poorly done) build and want to start thinking about my next one.

I rebuilt an Epiphone - do they make pickguards for this model?

It was an epiphone les Paul special ii. Obviously stripped literally everything and rebuilt from scratch except for the two knobs which are still there. Anyone know of a pick guard made for these ones that isn’t going to require me to modify? I say that recognizing the irony of not wanting to do any sanding. I hate sand, it’s rough and coarse and irritating

“New” Guitar Day - Complete Epiphone Les Paul Special II Rebuild

“New” Guitar Day - Complete (enough) Epiphone Les Paul Special II Rebuild

I purchased a cheap Epi Les Paul from about 2006 that played/sounded alright for $100 but I could not stand the appearance and wanted a better sound.

Stripped the finish on the neck and body, refinished, put in completely new hardware and electronics, and learned that dark finishes show fingerprints.

I had never done a single woodworking or electronics project in my life so despite the obvious imperfections I’m very glad with the product.

For electronics it has a SD 59 in the neck, an SD full shred in the bridge, and a new circuit with solderless pickup wiring, orange cap, and push pull coil split. Took me about a month.

Plus, I’ll hit 5 months sober this week. Woohoo!

Light orange peel - worth fixing and how?

Can see some light orange peel in my clear coat. On a video/in person it’s not really visible but i can obviously see it in this photo. Is it worth fixing? If so, would wet sanding with some 1000-3000 then throwing another coat on be the fix? I don’t want it to turn out murky and the last time I tried to cut and buff polish it turned out horrifically

Filler/primer question

I am working on refinishing a guitar right now amongst some other things but had a quick question on primers. I painted it last week and it was very evident very quickly that my sanding job was not as awesome as I thought - a couple lumps from wood glue not sanded off, some dents and such. My question is basically best path forward to fill in those dents. For large ones I used wood glue and saw dust and got those back to level. For smaller ones I had a couple coats of z poxy that I thought would do the trick but did not.

Would I be best to scrape wood filler over the entire area? Use a high fill primer? The paint I’m using is 2k poly so I don’t know if I can use “any old filler” or if I have to use something specific. The company sends out 1k primer in their bundles if you buy them.

Flame Charge Question

I absolutely demolish pits right now compared to my WW build. I have shattered cow, right gear, etc all maxed out and sitting at 240. But T12 bosses take multiple phase breaks/forever. Is it just a push build and not a farming build? 241 paragon, everything at least 2GAs and statted correctly and what not. Nothing concerning from a gear standpoint.

Anyone getting rid of a massive box?

Think like fridge or washing machine. I know, weird question, but I am attempting to build a DIY spray booth for a guitar refinish and was hoping someone might have a large box. Thanks!

Is all skills good for us?

Title - all the hotness on youtube seems to be how to make all skills necks. Playing WW 1 mythic right now.

Holder Paddle for Solid Bodies - For Free!

Strats and the like are 2 3/16" wide on the neck pocket. Paint mixing sticks from home depot are one inch wide. Get six, stack 3 tall, glue, clamp. Do again. Then glue (or don't) the two stacks together width-wise. Bang, free paddle. They even make ones that are "extra length." Just ask at the paint counter.

Had the most insane back to back to back rolls but not sure if I’m enjoying the class

Does the single target damage ever get better for counterswarm? I’m not sure how tied I am to this right now because bossing is so awful on T10 while I just wipe the floor with everything else

Rebuilding a cheap Epiphone days 3 and 4

The sander has become my friend and enemy. Not much new but getting seriously close to having it prepped for the first layer of z poxy that will fill in the gaps. Hoping to do so today but have band practice so we’ll see.

Other than sanding, started tru oil finishing the neck and filled in some old holes on the headstock with toothpicks and wood glue. Still not sure how I’m going to make them less obvious but might just keep the look as a reminder that this thing was once a Les Paul special

AT/T/AT with no Studying Tips

I have six years of project management experience but some of that was in a highly regulated organization which was key. I knew all of the documents no one else used because that org used everything down to communication plans.

That being said, I did not study. Not because I was confident but because I had a project crash and didn’t have the energy after long days to do it.

So here’s what helped me:

  1. PMI loves collaboration and talking about things. Most of the time the answer is talk to everyone or, in the case of negatives, talk to individuals. Exactly like how you would do in real life in most orgs.

  2. Learn all the docs (RAM, comms plan, risk register, etc.) if you don’t use them at your job.

  3. When it asks you what should you do after a hypothetical it means immediately most of the time. As in, what is your absolute next step. Not what is the best action you’ll eventually take or anything out in the future. Think of yourself getting off the phone hearing whatever news and what the exact next thing you should do is.

Other than that, idk. I thought I failed and had zero confidence going in (and out). I got lucky working for one of the few orgs out there that actually embraces PMI everything I guess

Logo on Tru Oil

Headstock is going to be a tru oil finish - do I just spray a couple layers of shellac on before dropping a waterslide logo on then shellac to even out the edges? I wanted to do a brand onto the bare mahogany but I already did a few layers of tru oil. Too late to turn back?

Passed first try AT/T/AT

I did not study literally at all and watched a few of the AR videos a year ago. I have been a PM for a while in a highly regulated org so maybe that helped. I read someone on reddit this morning saying pick whatever answer has collaboration and did that. Anyway, glad it’s over - had been putting it off forever and missed an attempt in the mental hospital lol

Remove or keep veneer?

The epiphone les paul im refinishing has a ludicrously thin veneer of what i can guess is Okume underneath all the poly on only the front of the body. I’m painting a new poly finish that is not see through at all. From what i can tell it’s mahogany underneath. Do I just sand off the veneer? It’s got some valleys from uneven sanding already because it’s so soft but I planned on doing quite a few layers of z poxy before getting ready to paint.

Destroying a perfectly fine epiphone to make my own - day 2

Today was a bit of a stressful one. I started by taking off all of the old hardware on the body to strip and refinish. The old zinc bushings were evidently either wood glued or super glued in and one was stuck horrifically bad. I had to break the zinc into pieces and carefully pull them out. I did a little damage but the next bushing install is permanent so I can fill the gaps with glue.

I decided to remove the old Epiphone logo and black gloss on the headstock by sanding while waiting for a heat gun to get delivered after realizing that sanding the body might take quite literally a month. I plan on either leaving it as is and oil finishing or branding in a custom logo. Open to logo ideas lol. Was gonna go with a sheep head but not sure.

Lastly, I got my heat gun and chipped away at the body paint. This was arduous and laborious. Took me about 4 hours to get just the top pulled off. As you can see, part of that made some dents or took some chunks out of the wood. I sanded the whole top with 40 grit for now and filled in gaps with wood glue. Going to have to do that nightly for a little bit to get the chunks properly filled.

A poly layer is going on top of it. I’ve narrowed that down to sparkle copper orange, diamond green (sparkle), a color shifting greenish yellowish blue, or a sparkle gold. I don’t want to do a traditional color since all the hardware is going to be black and I want it to be obviously custom from a distance. Open to opinions on that.
