Do cutters still play the Naval Observatory Master Clock time tick during underway preps?

They used to play the time tick over the 1MC during underway preps. It was on the checklist. It was broadcast on 5 mhz on the HF radio.

The purpose was for everybody on the ship to set their watches to the exact same accurate time. It was particularly important to the Quartermasters who needed it in their celestial navigation calculations.

But that may be outdated practice. There's accurate time on the cellphone, the GPS receivers, and maybe over a data network.

GFCI breaker trips under heavy load but not other times

The kitchen counter plug circuit trips when I run the coffee maker. It trips when about a third of the way through brewing a pot. Other things like the mixer do not trip the circuit. I tried a different coffee maker and that one also tripped--so I'm fairly certain it is not a fault of the appliance plugged in.

I pulled the plugs out of the wall and checked their connections. All were tight and there were no visible signs of a problem.

Do GFCI breakers wear down or need replacing sometimes?

I'll call in a pro, but I'm not looking forward to the search for one who will respond to "I have this breaker that keeps tripping." I tried two already and didn't get a call back.

Some cooling system overflow due to hot weather--Next steps?

I noticed some cooling system overflow on the ground in my parking spot after a drive where the air temp was in the 90s. It is not a great deal, the spot on the ground is 2 inch by 6 inch.

I drove later in the 80s and nothing spilled over then.

By all indications the cooling system is functioning just fine. The dash gauge reads 210, right in the middle of the gauge. Actually, on the coldest winter 0 degree day it reads 210--and on the hottest 95 degree summer day, it reads 210. It never waivers. I like that engineering.

What should I do next? Check levels, fill with fluids? Which fluids? I recall reading somewhere that one should only use Mazda fluids, true?

EDIT: the puddle is directly under the radiator

GIF wanted: Neela asking Abby "Are you stoned"

Season 15, Episode 3, "The Book of Abby"

That was a laugh out loud moment for me.

A GIF or meme of it could come in very handy in various comments sections.

>The exchange happens because a colleague unexpectedly asks Abby to talk to some kids about drugs and sex. Later in the episode, an out-of-character, overly cheerful Abby approaches Neela, gives her a random compliment, and starts acting strangely. Confused by the sudden shift in demeanor, Neela asks if she is stoned.

The Original ER -- Emergency

It was cutting edge for it's time.

I'll always remember Dr. Bracket toiling over the EKG tape that came in over the radio. He always replied with "start an IV with Ringer's Lactate and transport"

It was ER's version of "give me a Chem7 and a CBC"

And Nurse Dixie McCall. She could run circles around Sam.

Good times.

AMA Request: The dude who drives the HELP truck on the 33

Gotta be a cool job. Slowly driving up and down the 33 all day. Not a care in world.

No supervisor bothering you. Just providing assistance to all the broken down Jeep and Dodge drivers and also the Medicare Cab drivers who make up a third of all Buffalo traffic.

I drive my hooptie with confidence knowing he's out there to back me up.

Old and high mileage struts--Have you replaced?

I have a 2014 with 115k miles.

The mechanic wants to replace the front struts for $800. He says the life expectancy is 100k miles and then they get replaced.

He showed me the struts. Yeah, they have peeling paint and look nasty. But from what I can tell while driving--they seem to be working perfectly fine. I'm inclined to not spend the money replacing them.

Or would I replace them and have a religious moment when I realize how bad my ride was?

Just curious as to the insights of others.

USA: Do cops say "let's go down to the station and talk about this"? Do you have to go?

You see it all the time on TV shows.

But it seems to me, you can say "no thank you, unless you are going to arrest me"

I'm OK with cops, but I'm no fool.

EDIT: of course I'm not talking. I want to know nuances of being detained, being arrested, and going to the station voluntarily.

Why is the turnover of Docs at the VA so high?

In one five year stretch, I had four different Primary Care Docs.

This year, I got a new specialty MD in January and she just quit last week (June).

The few times I have had it in life, continuity in care has been very beneficial. I'd like to get that from the VA, but I don't.

Why can't the VA retain a Doc? Are they doing terrible things to them behind closed doors? Are they expected to meet unattainable standards? Is the pay just really noncompetitive? Are they hiring the wrong person to start with?

As a retiree, I have Tricare as an option. I wonder if I'd like it better there. Though the out of pocket is significantly higher.

Throwback to 2000s "No Cell Phones Allowed Here"

These days you can go anywhere with a cell phone (except take off and landings in the US). It was not always like this.

In the 2000s, people thought cell signals would interfere with medical equipment so they were strictly forbidden in the hospital. A friend of mine had a coniption at the gas station when a dude was pumping gas while talking on his phone--"we could blow up." That was the era.

It stirred memories when I saw Dr. Green, Dr. Lewis, and Dr. Pratt admonish patients for using cell phones.

I chuckle at the early ER seasons when they had a phone booth. Also, it is bemusing when they use phone books.

Nobody on the West Side waters their driveway anymore--They all moved to Amherst but they didn't take the culture with them

The West Side had the cleanest driveways in the city. Little old men, sometimes women, hosed down their driveway daily.

Lost culture.

My favorite supporting cast member: EMT Doris Pickman, Runner Up--Nurse Shirley

For some reason, Doris always catches my eye when she's on screen. She's so cute. I actually pause the playback for a moment to enjoy it.

I liked the episode where Dr. Green helped her out of a pickle with the Fire Department.

One of the supporting cast who piqued my interest was the Head Surgical Nurse, Shirley. She took no crap from those egotistical surgeons. Even Dr. Romano didn't phase her. From my viewpoint, there was potential for a bigger role for Shirley. It never happened.

I think I saw Shirley's face only once, and it was just a flash on the screen.

ER 2.0 -- When I was told they were the same actor, I was shocked

I don't follow Hollywood details closely, I just turn on the TV and enjoy it. When someone told me Dr. Robby and Dr. Carter are the same actor I was shocked. I still have to look hard to see it--Wyle has aged quite a bit.

I did some Googling and it told me that The Pitt was initially envisioned to be a continuance of Dr. Carter's career. But rights issues with the estate of ER creator Michael Crichton could not be worked out. (I suspect the estate regrets that now that The Pitt is huge)

An ER continuation would have been nice. There are several characters there that I'd be interested in seeing.

--------------------

EDIT: Duh.. of course when you look at the side-by-side photo and are equipped with hindsight knowledge, it is obviously the same person. But for the unaware viewer watching either The Pitt or ER the first time, the Wyle linkage surprised many of us.

Your Memorial Day barbecue warning--It's all that charcoal-broiled meat you people ate

Tony: Uncle Jun', are you alright?

Junior: They're dropping like flies.

Tony: It's all that charcoal-broiled meat you people ate.

Junior: Nobody told us till the 80s

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=v-e2KN3yYXI&t=164s

That makes me laugh every time because I can relate. In the 70s we ate grilled food almost daily in the Summer. Then in the 80s the "experts" came out and scolded it will give you cancer. We were like "Fuhgeddaboudit"

I heard Detective Homer's voice and unique diction and I could not pin it down, so I Googled. Homer is played by Richard Jenkins. He also played Nathaniel Fisher on Six Feet Under.

I really enjoyed his work in both shows. I checked his filmography at Wikipedia and it's as long as my arm. His work has received a lot of critical praise. Good for him.
