Norinco CQ-D

The CQ-D automatic rifle is the latest model in the CQ automatic rifle series from Norinco's Changqing Factory, chambered in 5.56 mm caliber.

Currently, the latest model in China's export-oriented CQ automatic rifle series is the CQ-D automatic rifle, formerly designated as the HR-31 (CS/LR36) 5.56 mm rifle. This weapon is a 5.56×45 mm caliber automatic rifle developed by China North Industries Group (Norinco) (some sources also indicate Sichuan Huaqing Machinery Co., Ltd., a subsidiary of China South Industries Group). It is available in standard-barrel and short-barrel variants. Because its appearance and operating mechanism are extremely similar to the HK416 automatic rifle produced by Heckler & Koch in Germany, it is considered a clone of the HK416. It is understood that the bare-gun price of Norinco's CQ-D automatic rifle on the international arms market is only $1,800 (approximately 13,000 RMB), whereas the bare-gun price of the original German HK416 automatic rifle exceeds $3,000 (approximately 21,000 RMB).

The CQ-D automatic rifle operates on a gas-operated, short-stroke piston system, making it less prone to malfunctions even when wind, sand, or wastewater enter the receiver. It has a maximum cyclic rate of fire of up to 900 rounds per minute, a muzzle velocity of 884 m/s, an effective range of 460 meters, and an overall weight of 3.7 kg.

The integrated Picatinny rail atop the CQ-D's upper receiver is made of advanced composite materials and is highly durable. It can be equipped with various tactical sights to meet different combat requirements. The Picatinny rails on both sides and under the handguard can also accommodate tactical flashlights, dual laser sights, foregrips, bipods, and other tactical accessories.

The CQ-D automatic rifle features an extra-heavy cold-hammer-forged rifled barrel made of carbon steel/stainless steel, with a rifling service life of nearly 20,000 rounds. The selector switch has three positions: burst, automatic, and safe.

In terms of accuracy, the CQ-D automatic rifle achieves an overall target hit rate of 80% at 300 meters, with an effective range of 460 meters. Although these figures are not on par with dedicated sniper rifles, it is highly suitable for use as a designated marksman rifle.

It is reported that the bare-gun price of the Chinese CQ-D automatic rifle on the international arms market is only $1,800 (approximately 13,000 RMB), while the bare-gun price of the original German HK416 automatic rifle exceeds $3,000 (approximately 20,000 RMB).

Both the CQ-D and HK416 automatic rifles are equipped with Picatinny rails and modular handguards, and both feature a tool-less adjustable gas regulator. In terms of ammunition feeding, they support 30-round STANAG magazines as well as drum magazines. In terms of options, the HK416 offers four barrel variants, whereas the CQ-D offers only two barrel variants.

XY 7.62

The XY 7.62mm high-precision sniper rifle used by the Xi'an SWAT is also

directly referred to as the Xiongying sniper rifle. This variant is the same

model as the XY 7.62 used by the Snow Leopard Commando Unit in the 1st "Sharp Blade" International Sniper Competition in August 2016. This rifle has several variants; although they share the same model designation, there are noticeable differences in details.

LG2 40mm Underbarrel Grenade Launcher

The LG2 underbarrel grenade launcher comes in two models: LG2-I and LG2-II. The I model (Figure 1) is mainly used with the US-made M16 series 5.56mm rifles, while the II model (Figures 2, 3, 4) is primarily used with the domestic Type 97 5.56mm rifle. The main difference between the two lies in the structure of the mounting base (see Figure 4). The I model connects to the M16 series rifles via locating pins and accessory mounts, whereas the II model connects to the Type 97 rifle through the upper circular hole and the "T" slot, and is positioned using the release handle.

The launcher mainly consists of the barrel assembly, receiver assembly, firing mechanism assembly, mounting base assembly, sight assembly, safety handle, and buffer sleeve. The barrel assembly, mounting base, and receiver assembly are made from high-strength aluminium alloy and have been anodised. The sight is mounted on the left rear side of the receiver, can be folded, and the scale seat can rotate on the graduated base for selecting trajectories, either curved or direct fire, with a range of 50m to 400m. The launcher weighs 1.4kg and has an overall service life of over 500 rounds.

The LG2 employs a side-flipping breech-loading tube with good gas sealing, low chamber pressure, and the cartridge chamber is not exposed to high-pressure gases, resulting in minimal erosion. The grenade rounds, both high-explosive and armour-piercing high-explosive, operate on a high-low pressure firing principle. The high-explosive grenades can neutralise targets within a 10m radius, while the armour-piercing grenades can penetrate armour and simultaneously inflict fragmentation damage on living targets. This launcher can not only fire compatible domestic 40mm grenades but also foreign M433 and M406 series grenades, including high-explosive, armour-piercing, illumination, and training rounds.

Interestingly, most LG2 units currently exported for foreign trade are mounted under AK series rifles (Figures 5, 6). Visually, the barrel handguard material and design differ, the mounting base is different, but the other components remain largely unchanged.

Electric Feed System for Shotguns Developed by Factory 296

The main purpose is to improve the ammunition capacity of the Type 221 shotgun for unmanned equipment. Initially, the magazine of this gun had a capacity of only 8 rounds and was primarily designed for use by individual soldiers, which limited its application potential on unmanned platforms.

This externally powered feed system mainly comprises: ❶ shotgun ammunition belt, ❷ electric feed assembly, and ❸ belt box. The electric feed assembly is installed in the magazine well underneath the receiver, and the belt box is mounted on the unmanned platform, integrating into an unmanned combat system.

Each link of the shotgun belt features a front positioning portion, a rear positioning portion, and a cartridge holding portion. The front and rear positioning portions of the belt link prevent axial (fore-and-aft) movement of the shotgun shells. The cartridge holding portion securely holds the shell and is provided with a hooking structure used to connect adjacent links in series to form a belt.

The electric feed assembly includes a motor mount provided with a feed channel through which the shotgun belt is fed into the receiver. Mounted on the motor mount are a motor, a motor gear, an intermediate gear, and a feed gear sequentially connected by power transmission. The feed gear is mounted on a feed sprocket shaft, which is supported on the motor mount via bearings. A feed sprocket is fixed to the feed sprocket shaft and positioned within the feed channel. The motor drives the feed sprocket, which in turn drives the shotgun belt to advance and feed ammunition. The upper terminal end of the feed channel communicates with the magazine well of the shotgun.

The feed channel is L-shaped, featuring an arcuate profile at the bend and rectangular profiles elsewhere. The inlet of the feed channel is flared (bell-mouthed). The feed sprocket is located on the inner side of the bend in the feed channel, while a delinking tooth is located on the outer side of the bend. The delinking tooth gradually increases in thickness along the feed direction. When the shotgun belt passes the delinking tooth, the tooth inserts into the delinking clearance to provide a mechanical stop, stripping the shotgun shells from the belt links. A link ejection port is provided in the feed channel corresponding to the stripping point.

In addition, a fixed lug is provided at the receiver feed port to prevent the shotgun from locking open on an empty chamber (bolt hold-open).

It should be noted that when ammunition is nearly depleted, the last 5 shotgun shells inside the feed channel cannot reach the shotgun chamber due to the lack of pushing force from subsequent rounds. In this case, reloading is required, or dummy rounds must be used for the last 5 rounds.

By optimizing the design of the shotgun belt, electric feed assembly, and belt box, matching the output torque of the torque limiter, the cartridge feeding thrust, and the sprocket drive force, and integrating fire control to synchronize motor speed with the shotgun's rate of fire, the transition of the shotgun from magazine-fed to belt-fed operation is achieved. The system is simple to operate, safe, and reliable. It effectively increases ammunition payload, enhances the sustained firepower of the shotgun when deployed on unmanned platforms, broadens the operational scope of shotguns, and diversifies the weapon types suitable for integration onto unmanned platforms.
