Aer Lingus stranded me without a visa, broke 3 promises to fix it, then fought me over a €45 hotel bill

TL;DR: Flight diverted for a mechanical fault. I told crew immediately I had no visa for Ireland and asked to deplane in Paris, where I did have one, instead of continuing to Dublin. Refused, and given three separate assurances — all broken, each made in front of at least two crew members — that my connection and hotel would be handled. Forced through Irish border control without a visa at 2:30am; let in only because a customs officer used discretion. Spent over an hour trying to find anyone on the ground who could help. Sent a detailed letter to Aer Lingus's CEO and press office with a 14-day deadline for a response. Nothing. Their complaints team has repeatedly said my concerns are "documented," couldn't give a timeline when asked directly, and separately cut my hotel reimbursement by €45 citing an internal cap that appears nowhere on their website. Full account below.

On July 10th, I was flying Aer Lingus EI527, Paris to Dublin, connecting to New York. Over the course of that night, Aer Lingus staff gave me three separate assurances that my hotel and connecting flight would be handled. None were kept. Here's what happened.

The diversion. The flight departed on schedule at 16:30. About 30 minutes in, we were told the aircraft was turning back to Paris because the landing gear had failed to retract. We landed back in Paris around 17:30 and were held on the runway for over three hours, with minimal water and no food, while ground crew ran repeated tests before shutting the engine down entirely for a final check. To be clear, the mechanical fault itself isn't the issue. That's not something the airline controlled. Everything that followed is.

Ignored warnings about my situation. As soon as we landed, I told the two cabin crew I would miss my Dublin–New York connection. They said they'd rebook me. A couple of hours later, once it was clear they couldn't identify the fault, I told the crew that I held no visa for Ireland and asked to deplane in Paris, where I did have a valid visa, rather than continue to Dublin. This was refused, and I was told again my connection would be handled.

Conditions on board. There were roughly a dozen children on board returning from a Disneyland trip. The captain announced a series of tests, each described as the final one, before the engine was shut down entirely for a last test near 9:00pm. During this wait, Aer Lingus emailed a €25 meal voucher as compensation for the delay.

Return to the terminal. We were bused back to the terminal at Charles de Gaulle at 20:55. Only one convenience store was open, selling cold sandwiches and water; the entire flight's passengers converged on it. We then waited with no updates or communication from staff until after midnight, when we were told a replacement aircraft was being flown in from Dublin with a new boarding time of 1:00am.

Refused a rebooking. Before re-boarding, I called Aer Lingus customer service myself to get ahead of the visa problem, explaining I needed a new connection booked given the risk. The agent refused, saying the flight hadn't technically been "missed" yet since its new departure time was 1:30am. After about 20 minutes of back and forth, I gave up. I had no choice but to board since my luggage was checked and loaded onto the plane.

A third assurance. On the replacement aircraft, I again asked the crew what I should do given I had neither a visa nor a connecting flight. I was told, for the third time that staff on the ground near baggage claim in Dublin would arrange my hotel and connecting flight.

Arrival in Dublin. We landed around 2:30am local time. The international transfer desk was closed, so I was routed directly into border control without a visa. The customs officer confirmed Aer Lingus had never flagged my situation to them in advance, stated the airline's handling of it was negligent, and used discretion to let me through rather than send me back to France. Had he not, I could have been turned back, with unknown consequences for my ability to obtain visas in future.

No one to help. The counter I'd been directed to was unstaffed. Airport security confirmed no one would be on duty at that hour. About 20 minutes later I caught a crew member from my flight on her way out (with two other crew members present) and she pointed to the door and told me to knock, then wished me luck and hurried off. So that's what I did: stood in an empty terminal at 2:30am, knocking on a locked door because Aer Lingus's own crew told me it was my only option. The man who eventually answered was understandably not happy about being disturbed at that hour. That's not on him, it wasn't his job and he had no way to help me even if he'd wanted to. He said he only handled baggage, not hotels or rebookings, and redirected me to the check-in desk, which was also unstaffed. Security said the desks wouldn't open until around 5am. Altogether I spent over an hour trying to find anyone who could actually help.

Final call to customer service. I called again to request a new connecting flight. She insisted my New York flight had already departed on time. It took about 15 minutes just for the agent to understand the situation. She rebooked me to the next available flight at 11am the next day. I asked whether I could be moved to business class as a courtesy given everything that had happened; declined. She said she was already booking me to a different flight free of charge and that I wasn't entitled to anything more. When I asked about a hotel, I was told to book and pay for my own and keep the receipt for reimbursement.

Aftermath. I left the airport around 3:30am, found a hotel myself, and returned at 8am for the rebooked flight.

Since then: I sent a full written account to Aer Lingus's CEO and Chief Customer Officer, and to their press office, with three specific questions: why my disclosed visa risk was never passed to ground staff or border control, why customer service refused to rebook me despite that disclosed risk, and what compensation they consider appropriate. I gave a 14-day deadline. That deadline has passed with no response from either the executive team or press office. Their complaints team, on a separate case, has repeatedly told me my concerns are "documented" and "recorded." When I asked directly for a substantive response or even a timeline for one, they could provide neither.

Separately, their complaints team reduced my hotel reimbursement from €260 to €215, citing "reasonable expense guidelines." The word "reasonable" is the only guidance published anywhere on their site. No figure, no cap. When I asked what made €260 unreasonable for emergency accommodation booked at 3:30am with no ability to compare options, I received no specific answer.

I disclosed the risk early, disclosed it again, and asked direct questions at every stage, each time with more than one crew member present to hear it. Aer Lingus has not answered any of it.

Happy to answer questions. I have the full correspondence saved.

MPC in Dublin for pre clearance, is it available?

I'm flying Uk- JFK via Dublin soon and the layover in Dublin is quite short, the flight I'm getting in looks like on flightradar24 that its usually late too. Is the MPC app thing (I've never used it) available in Dublin at present? I've travelled to the US on a few ESTAs before and I have a valid present ESTA now.

Im an anxious traveller and I'm worried TSA will take ages and I'll miss my flight!

Plus size - aer Lingus business or AA business or preferred

Want to be comfy for our first international flight but hubs and I both are plus size. I'm fine in economy seats but hubs isn't. So should we spring for the business class seats on aer lingus or are the American Airlines preferred seats spacious enough if we don't care about full recline and we would prefer to have arm rest up between us

Online check in shenanigans

Is anyone having any issues with online check-in and storing your boarding passes at the moment? Flying from Ireland to the UK this week and am having a mare.

  1. Launch the app and try to log in, and fail.
  2. Remove the app and re-download it and try to log in, and fail.
  3. Enter my email address so that I can reset my password. Never get an email the allows me to do this. Even in junk folder.
  4. Go via the website, and use the booking number to check in. Success.
  5. Look at my boarding pass, see what seat they’ve put me in, and click the button to add it to my phones wallet. Nothing happens.
  6. Repeat step 5, get step 5’s result.
  7. Open a different browser and repeat step 5, get step 5’s result.
  8. Put down phone and say FFS
  9. Pick up phone, open original browser and repeat step 5. Now instead of seeing my boarding pass I see the following message: “Collect a paper boarding pass at the airport check-in desk.”
  10. Opened the app again. Instead of logging in I put in my booking number and family name and got to see my trip details. Tried to issue boarding pass and got “All attempted boarding pass retrievals failed.”

Has anyone had a similar saga? Are there any magical tips for me to get my boarding pass without the hassle of having to show up to the airport early to brave the real life check in queue?

Best business class seat for couples on Aer Lingus A330-300?

Expect to fly business class on Aer Lingus soon. I'm getting mixed answers as to the best seats for couples.

Some say the center seats, because you can exit without the window passenger having to step over the aisle passenger.

Some say that isn't a big deal, and the seats on the right side are more private, out-of-the-way, and the window passenger gets a lot of privacy. I've read that one, or the other, is easier to talk, and one, or the other, is easier to sleep (overnight flight).

Your opinion?

New Carrier Fee

I don't fly much so I'm not too educated on how pricing and all that work too well but looking to travel back to Ireland around the same time I did last year in May. I booked in Nov 2025 and these were the prices. The second image is the price and fees today booking for the same dates/flights/times just a year later both round trips. Just wondering if this is just because of when I'm booking or if this is just what to expect to pay now. I know obviously price will go up, gas is expensive all that but thats a pretty significant jump hence why I ask. The taxes and fees for the new return flight are almost as expensive as the entire fees and taxes for the whole round trip the first time. Thanks for any thoughts. Sorry if this is a stupid question as well.

Unclear if have to collect bags

I have flights booked - all one ticket by airnz - from Dublin to lax (operated by aerlingus) then lax to Auckland (airnz).

In Dublin we will check bags all the way through & complete immigration pre clearance
We arrive into lax term 4 depart term b
2hour 40 min transfer time

Question I have is do I need to physically collect my own bags in lax to transfer them if on two connecting international flights booked on same ticket?
If so is the transfer length ok?
Travelling with 3 kids so keen to get this right!

Thanks in advance

IND to DUB

Will be flying this Weds to DUB from IND.

Curious how the recent flights have been.

Smooth? Full? Semi full? Can you move if there's an open seat/row?

Food? Entertainment?

The basics. TIA

App issue

My trip is confirmed, I have the confirmation via email and the money has left my account. It is also visible under ‘my trips’ on the app but when I click on it to see the transfers info it says the booking does not exist and to call customer service. Is this a common problem?

Thank you :)

Absolutely unreasonable extra luggage fee

I purchased a round trip ticket from Chicago to Dublin to Frankfurt and then the same route back. On August 16th I am on my returning flight starting from Frankfurt. My ticket includes a checked bag, a carry on bag, and a personal item. I did not run into any issue when coming from Chicago to Dublin to Frankfurt. However, at the checkin of Frankfurt, a on-scene officer forced me to check my carry-on luggage, and said that checking the carry-on luggage is free but carrying the carry-on luggage with you would charge a 35 euro. I have lots of delicate electronics in my carry-on bag so I am unwilling to check it, and it is of course impossible to put all the electronics in my backpack. I was therefore forced to pay 35 euros. However, I was not made aware of this policy any time during my purchase of the ticket on Aer Lingus official website or through any other sources. This is absolutely ridiculous and a total abuse of customer rights.

2/2 Losing Bike On Aer Lingus Flight

I flew Aer Lingus last year and they lost my bike. If I didn't have an airtag, it would have been lost for good. Well I thought that surely it wouldn't happen again, but just landed in Nantes from the States, and the bike was left behind in Dublin once more. PSA- avoid Aer Lingus if you have a bike!

Flying with a 22 month old

Trying to prepare in advance. I will be flying a red eye flight with my 22 month old son and my fiancé in Spring 2027. My son will not have his own seat. Can we request a bassinet seat or will he be too old? What sleep travel hacks would be allowed on board (such as inflatable bed, seat extended, etc. ANY advice is appreciated!

I am seeing conflicting information about baby changing bag allowance- previously I could have my own checked bag, plus the small carry on , now I'm not so sure

Is this still allowed in addition to your own small personal bag? ?

Possible to book a reward flight and cash flight on one itinerary? (No reward space available for connecting DUB - LHR leg)

I'm trying to get to London from IAD (Washington DC). There's unfortunately no reward space for DUB - LHR connections the entire last week of August. This is a long shot, but is there any way to book the IAD - DUB leg with Avios, and book the DUB - LHR with cash, and merge into one booking so I can check a bag the entire way? Perhaps by calling? I would have just tried to call first, but didn't want to sit through a long queue just to be given an emphatic, "no."

Tier Progression - is it worth it vs Premium Economy alternative?

I have a number of transatlantic flights coming up over the next 6 months (4 round trips).

In your experience, are the benefits meaningful with Aer Lingus tiers?

I ask because there is no Premium Economy, and flying flex feels like a waste of money (because there are change fees if the price of the flights do not match) - to sit in the same seat in coach.

Thanks!

US preclearance as an unemployed student

I'm doing a solo trip from Heathrow to LAX later this year with a ~2hr layover in Dublin. I'm 18 and this will be my first time travelling to the USA. I am a university student who has never been formally employed and am wondering if this will cause extra questioning at preclearance.

I'm paying for the trip using savings from my government issued trust fund/money gifted to me by grandparents and even after leaving a comfortable margin for unexpected costs I will have a substantial amount of money left afterwards.

Would being a young unemployed student cause issues at preclearance? I've seen on here that people often get asked about employment. Obviously I can explain how I'm affording the trip however I would like to know in advance if its going be relevant or if I'll need to show them my bank account or similar.

I'm also considering attempting to get a job when I start next year at uni, I haven't so far for personal reasons but it is an option if that helps.

Starlink Rollout

I flew DUB-JFK yesterday on EI-EAV (St. Ronan) and couldn't find anything online about the broader fleet rollout beyond EI-EIN. Looks like they're making progress on the A330 fleet as, to my surprise, the crew announced during boarding that EAV was equipped with Starlink. Got a rock solid 300-400mbps w/ 30-40ms pings over the Atlantic. Curious if others have seen it rolled out elsewhere aside from EAV and EIN?
