hi,
does anyone have recs for intermediate-advanced guitar teachers in the neighborhood or nearby? Preferring someone who is not part of a school/company but am open to it. Thank you!
Hydrant Sprinklers On at Clinton and Degraw!
The FDNY pulled up (i assumed because of the downed trees on Clinton near Degraw) turns out they put the sprinkler cap on the hydrant near Poppy’s - come and enjoy the cool water while it’s still on! (This was around 10:45 am today)
To kill a mockingbird
We have TWO northern mockingbirds nesting right outside of our apartment. Every time we leave they are aggressively dive bombing us and our dog. We try to quickly walk across the street and they follow us. I cannot live like this!
People who have experienced this before:
How long will we have to endure this madness?
What are ways of deterring this infuriating behavior?
Are umbrellas, squirt bottles, hats my best line of defense against these brutal beasts?
Also, spare me with your “co-exist”, “protect the birds”, “iTs iLleGal tO hARasS tHeM” rhetoric. I remember when bird watching / being “into” birds wasn’t en vogue.
Thanks!
ISO - HVAC rec
Hi all—anyone have an HVAC company rec? My A/C unit (central air) is getting old and I’m looking to replace after summer. I’ve had pretty awful experiences with Vigilante in the past, so hoping to avoid them if possible!

Gluten free in CG?
Any recs on GF food in the neighborhood? Any surprising or unexpected options? With an Italian heavy neighborhood, it’s a hard area for gluten free, especially when I’m in a rush and want to pick up a sandwich or something quick.
Places I know that have Gf options:
- court st grocer has GF bread (pretty good)
- Daily provisions has the same GF bread
- Planted Cafe
- Sottocasa has great GF pizza
Add to my list!
Bergen Street subway construction
Does anyone know what the project is? They’ve had a team of jackhammers below the tracks for what seems like a year, and those sheds on Baltic have been there forever too.
I looked through the MTA’s list of projects, but I couldn’t find anything at this station.
Plant Exchange
Anybody have info on neighborhood plant exchanges? These used to happen all the time in my other neighborhood’s Buy Nothing group, but my request to the CG group has been pending for a year with no update. Would love to share some propagations and get some new plants for my collection!
Co-ed Pickup Soccer Tomorrow (Saturday) @ 8:30am on Pier 2
Is anyone interested in joining our game for tomorrow morning? We've been a bit light on attendance lately and can use some players. If you'd like to attend regularly that would also be awesome. You can join through here and let me know if you have any questions

Brad Lander won! He was a wonderful rep for us in city hall, and will be a great representative for us in the House.
He has been for decades a great community guy and strikes me as a good, decent, reliable and competent public servant. He was an effective comptroller too. This feels like a very good neighbor got the job. It's a nice, strange feeling.
Freestone property group in Carroll Gardens?
UPDATE: We did not take the apartment. Thanks all for the advice!! Will avoid Freestone at all costs :)
My roommate and I are thinking about moving to a place in Carroll Gardens but it’s managed by Freestone property group which has terrible reviews. I am wondering if anyone has experience with them specifically in Carroll Gardens and whether this should be a dealbreaker or not… any advice?
anyone know what "Queeps" is?
lots of film crew activity on Smith today, signs say "Queeps".... anyone know what it is, or any fame-o sightings besides the usuals?
USPS box on Court & 2nd
Does anyone know if this USPS collection box is active? I dropped 3 handmade cards (to diff addresses) in this box ~3 weeks ago and none of the recipients have received them.
The amount of non-essential helicopter traffic is too damn high.
Not to channel my inner Jimmy McMillan here but, within the last 3 years the amount of private helicopters and Blade helicopters screeching overhead has become literally absurd.
It's not only during events like the Ryder Cup, either; now it starts before 8 am and continues until well after 8 p.m. Something about the combined effect of the helicopters flying below 1,000 feet and the sound ricocheting off of the brownstones produces this ridiculous rattling noise.
At a certain point, I start to feel like I'm in some kind of warzone rather than an American city.
Carroll Park Bathrooms
Has anyone attempted to make a stink (pun intended) about the horrific condition of the Carroll Park public restrooms? I've lived in the neighborhood for 5+ years, and most aware of the problem in the past few years as we have a young child who loves to play there, and the restrooms are always disgusting. I don't think I've ever been able to use them.
I just submitted feedback to the Parks Commissioner via the website, but thought I'd ask here in case there is a group trying to improve this already.
Hell Gate's NYC Primary Day 2026 Live Blog
Today is primary day, and Hell Gate reporters are already all over the city, staking out polling places, talking to voters, and taking the temperature of the various races. Here is our first dispatch of the day. Keep refreshing the link above to see the rest!
Hello on this soggy, muggy primary day! After the polls close at 9 p.m. tonight, we'll find out whether Mayor Zohran Mamdani has the political juice to launch a pair of democratic socialists into Congress, or whether New York's Democratic power structure still has the muscle to keep their turf.
Will the Mamdani-anointed State Assemblymember Claire Valdez win and represent the "Commie Corridor" in Congress? Or will Brooklyn Borough President Antonio Reynoso, son of Los Sures, prevail in the race that has gotten increasingly nasty? (Also: Julie Wonspoiler alert?)
Can Darializa Avila Chevalier move past her own social media history and the racist attacks coming from her opponents to dethrone Representative Adriano Espaillat uptown? Or will $7 million in super PAC cash and an "anti-gentrification" narrative fend off the newcomer?
And what about the raft of Mamdani-backed state candidates? (And the DSA-endorsed ones he declined to support?) Oh and we can't forget Lander vs. Goldman, or Jessica vs. Jessica, or any of the important-but-obscure district leader races happening in Brooklyn that could determine the soul of the Democratic Party in Kings County. Want to read all our previous election coverage this cycle? Go here.
Hell Gate's live blog will be humming all day, as our reporters fan out across the city to talk to voters and keep an eye on the polling sites. Also, be sure to tune in tonight to Hell Gate's primary election livestream, starting at 8 p.m.!
UPDATE 8:30 A.M. | Jackson Heights
Down the block from PS 69 on 37th Avenue, canvassers supporting State Senator Jessica Ramos and a canvasser from 1199 SEIU, which is supporting her opponent, Assemblymember Jessica González-Rojas, were arguing as they handed out leaflets to potential voters.
"Steve Cohen is funding her campaign! She took money from him," said a supporter of Ramos, referring to the $850,000 that flooded into a super PACsupporting González-Rojas during the race's final days. (Cohen, the billionaire Mets owner who is in the process of building a casino next to Citi Field, has not responded to questions about whether he is the source of the dark money.)
"No she didn't," responded the SEIU member. "She didn't take the money. It's an independent expenditure, he can do what he wants with the money. He chose a side. Ask him why he spent the money, I only know why we endorsed her."
One tangible impact of the late spending on the race? A deluge into people's mailboxes. A Jackson Heights resident told Hell Gate that they received nine mailers supporting González-Rojas just yesterday, and that wasn't including the ones from the Working Families Party, which also supports her.
Despite the furor surrounding the casino, one 50-year resident of Jackson Heights was ready to turn on Ramos.
"She embraced Cuomo, which determined my vote," said Fanny, referring to Ramos's endorsement of Andrew Cuomo during last year's mayoral race. "I don't know Jessica González-Rojas, but a lot of people I like are backing her."
Indeed, González-Rojas is supported by almost every other elected official in the area, including Congressmember Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez.
For first-time voter Zinat, she was just happy to be able to cast a vote at all. She became a citizen last year.
"I was so excited and everyone in there was so helpful," Zinat said as she held up her "I Voted" sticker outside of the polling site. "I already knew who I was going to vote for, so it was easy."
Who did Zinat vote for? She wasn't telling.
Where are folks watching the World Cup games in the neighborhood?
reddit.comDid anyone see this?
My neighbor got a box of these Kiwi.
Get out and vote today
