Feeding a baby puree at 3.5mo

Hello -

So I have a friend on fb who had a baby just a few days after me. And I noticed that at 3.5m she has already started to feed her baby purées. Doesn’t appear to be a little bit because the bib had food all over it.

Now I’ve always heard you can’t start a baby on anything but milk or formula till at the very least 4mo, but usually starting closer to 6m. My baby doesn’t seem close to ready yet and he’s pretty above average in almost all milestones.

Is this normal or ok? Would a pediatrician ever recommend this? I know we’re close to 4m but we’re not that close..

I didn’t say anything when I seen the post because I didn’t want to be wrong on the subject but I do a lot of research to make sure my baby is on track with milestones and stuff and I haven’t seen anything about starting this early, and normally you would dilute the puree if that’s what you’re going to start with & only like the smallest little amount since it’s more for practicing how to eat, not about getting any nutrition out of it??

Waterrr

How many oz of water did your pediatrician say your 6month old+ baby can drink per day since starting solids?
I know every practice is different. I know breast milk and formula are still the main sources of nutrition. I know excessive water is not good for the baby due to dilution of sodium. I know all that stuff already lol. I’m just curious what other people are doing based on what their ped recommended if any lol

Question on portion size a 16 month will/should have [ON]

Our 16 month baby (girl roughly 9-9.3kgs, 75cms) is a very light eater of solids. She will eat maybe half a portion of a small pancake or 2-4 small bites of chicken thighs or couple of pasta rolls in one seating. Occasionally she will eat a handful of berries or a spoonful of yogurt. I am very worried about the portion sizes since I feel it may impact her immunity (Vit C), brain development (Iron), and general health (other minerals/vitamins). She has a good portion of 3.25% cows milk during the day and before sleep i.e. 4 cups (4 * 240ml bottles). We always give her milk after the meal and not before. How or what resources do I have online or in Ottawa, Ontario to improve the feeding.

Stool color 8 month old

Hi. This is the color of my 8 month olds stool. EBF but has combo feed with breastmilk and formula when I’m away at work. Could the darkness come from the iron in formula? He’s acting fine, but I don’t like the color

Recently he has eaten cottage cheese, avocado

Freeze dried fruits?

I was curious about the safety of freeze dried fruit, specifically freeze dried strawberries. To me they seem like puffs in the way that they kinda melt in the mouth but I went to check the app and couldn’t find anything on its safety. For reference my baby is 12 months old and does like puffs as an occasional snack and does really well with them.

7.5 month old holds food in mouth and gets mad

7.5 month old has been on a mix of purées and BLW finger foods. Baby will eagerly put finger foods in mouth, somewhat overstuffing. But then can’t swallow and won’t spit it out either. Baby gets frustrated and cries until we either wash down with water if able, or if it’s something like peach skin or a mouthful of steamed zucchini or a small chunk of cucumber or melon (all given in the form factors recommended by Solid Starts), we have to fish it out because baby will keep crying, which I know is not ideal.

Does this mean baby isn’t ready for finger foods yet or should we limit the types of food we give?

Don't Have an Oven...What Do I Make for Baby?

Long story short, our oven broke and we will not have one for months at least. My baby is 6.5 and beginning his solids journey. So many BLW recipes are made in the oven, or veggies are roasted in the oven, etc. Any advice? Is there any way I could still bake things? There are so many things I want to bake him! Egg bites, sheet pan pancakes, etc. Help!

Healthy dairy ladder recipes?

Baby is 10 Months and I want to try introducing dairy directly to him. I don’t really want to give him sugar (he’s never had it) or processed food. Anyone else managed to give dairy ladder foods just by making them at home? Eg Step 1 is a baked biscuit. He only has 2 tiny teeth on the bottom. How would he even eat it? Surely there’s a better way… help me I have baby brain.

My 9 month old baby doesn’t want solids…. What to do?

So since my 9 month old has been growing his top 4 teeth, he’s been super uninterested in solids for about 3 weeks now. He’s luckily still taking milk and formula, and he has enough diapers, but will reject and turn his face with solids. I’ve tried purées, cold soft foods like yogurt or fruit puree…. I’m worried he’s going to get off the pattern of consuming solids, and it doesn’t help seeing influencer moms feeding their 9 month old baby full course meals.

What do I do?

Edit: I’ve also tried giving him a teething toy before meals. I’ve also tried waiting over an hour since last feeding to try solids. He used to like solids when we started at the 6 month mark

Experience with refluxy/gassy baby starting solids

Hi all! So my baby has had really bad reflux and gas since she was about a week or two old, we’ve gone to the pediatrician about 4 times since she was born 5 months ago, so we tried a couple of things to make it better but nothing really worked any wonders. The pediatrician said she could start solids at 4 months, but we will wait for 6 months to see if her digestion matures a bit more because she is still having issues. She often still has gas pains at night but is fine during the day.

So my question is, if your baby had similar issues, how did starting solids go?

Did the reflux and gas get better, worse, stay the same?

What foods helped and what foods made it worse?

Any other advice you would have?

Dribbling while straw drinking

Hi All. My 11 month old has been successfully drinking using a straw for probably about 4 months at this point. It took him a few weeks to figure out how to suck up the water but he got it pretty quick when we switched to one of those straw cups that I can squeeze to show him. However, he's always had issues with dribbling out most of what he sucks up. He probably swallows 25-50% of it on average. Sometimes I swear it's like he just wants to rinse his mouth because he doesn't swallow anything and sometimes he'll take a drink and swallow all of it but that's pretty rare. Should I be concerned at this point? I kept assuming it would just take time for him to figure out how to take in less water at a time or swallow it all better but now it's been months and I'm just wondering if there's something I should be doing to help him or at what point we should possibly consider getting outside help.

He's otherwise eating and swallowing very well. He's got a huge appetite for solids, has been weaning himself super successfully, and eats a really varied diet of lots of different flavors or textures. We have no concerns at all with eating. I'm just hoping I'll be able to give him water without him getting it all over himself and his clothes soon.

Struggling with some recipes in App

I have a bit of a hard time with some of the recipes in the app. A lot of times they will say that the recipe is okay for a 6-month -old, and say " cut to age appropriate sizing" for some of the ingredients, or not have any instructions on how to cut the ingredients. But when you then go to the guidance on that specific ingredient, it'll say only to give it in huge chunks for that age, which is obviously impossible in a recipe for muffins, pancakes, some soups, etc. I'm having a bit of a hard time because some of it just seems like it's impossible for that age group, and it is also really frustrating to constantly have to go to the individual ingredient pages to see what size to cut the ingredients to. Also many of the recipes don't tell you how to then serve the final product in an age-appropriate manner. Though that seems to be changing.

Dropping bottles?

Baby is 7.5 months and has taken to solids like someone's paying her to eat 🤣 she chews well, handles a good range of textures, and is on 3 meals already as she's enjoying herself so much. She feeds herself and has an immature pincer grasp already (thumb and two fingers) so we have been offering bite size pieces as well as bigger chunks and she's loving that. The only place we deviate from BLW principles is spoon feeding, I couldn't handle yogurt getting flicked on the walls so if it's a mushy/wet texture I do feed it to her from a spoon myself.

With that context, when is it appropriate for her to start dropping bottles? She's already gone from 5x 8oz bottles per day to 4, and one of those she's been regularly leaving half of so I think it could probably be replaced by a snack. But when should I do that?
