Does drinking alcohol cause cancer?
I've been researching a lot lately and wanted to bring something up that doesn't get enough time in wellness conversations: does drinking alcohol cause cancer? The short answer, according to major health organizations like the WHO and American Cancer Society, is yes, alcohol is classified as a Group 1 carcinogen, meaning there's strong evidence it causes cancer in humans.
I work with clients who are generally health conscious, they exercise, eat well, manage stress, but many of them still drink without thinking twice about it. So when the topic of does drinking alcohol cause cancer comes up in our sessions, there's often genuine surprise. People associate cancer risk with smoking or processed foods, but alcohol doesn't get the same cultural scrutiny, even though the evidence is pretty clear.
The cancers most strongly linked to alcohol consumption include mouth, throat, esophagus, liver, colon, and breast cancer. And the risk isn't limited to heavy drinkers. Even moderate and light drinking has been associated with increased risk for certain cancers, particularly breast cancer.
As wellness coaches, I think that we have a responsibility to have these conversations openly. Not to shame anyone's choices, but because informed clients make better decisions. Does drinking alcohol cause cancer in every person who drinks? No, the risk doesn't equal certainty. But it's a risk worth understanding..
Would love to hear how others in this community approach this topic with clients. Is it something you bring up proactively, or do you wait for clients to ask?
