What are some easy things that could be done to make Jackson Heights better? What are some things you think "Why isn't DOT/Shekar/Police/etc doing this??"
I've been apartment hunting around Jackson Heights and trying not to miss anything important. I usually read reviews, walk the neighborhood at different times, and I've even been checking Streetsmart alongside listings to get a better picture of the building's history. For people who've rented here, are there any Jackson Heights specific red flags or things you always check before signing? Could be the building itself, the landlord, parking, noise, pests or anything else you only learn after moving in.
Would love to hear what you wish someone had told you before you signed your lease.
A lot of the dessert items are very oddly named with no description of what it is, and I'm genuinely curious. Are these names from just a bygone era, or just made up?
I worked in ice cream for a long time and the oldest thing I know of that most of the younger population doesn't know of are egg creams.
For anyone who has any info, thank you! Id love to try some of these someday, but don't want to hassle the waitstaff explaining every item to me. Id like to continue coming back lol.
Why does Diversity Plaza have no seating, no greenery, and is pretty filthy? It's a major meeting spot - this should have been beautified ages ago - and lets put some seating there so people don't have to bring their own crates!
Why are there people sleeping on the sidewalk? There are a few people I see regularly who look like they could really use some help! I feel like we all just walk by and don't DO anything. Last night when I was walking home I saw numerous people sleeping on the sidewalk. How hard is it to help a handful of people? A place to go where people can shower and stay for a few nights (or more).
I feel like these are easy fixes....?
I feel like our local politicians are failing.
We moved here in March so aren’t familiar yet with the 4th of July scene in the neighborhood—do people typically set off fireworks? Just figuring out how to plan for our jittery dog. Thanks!
Does anyone happen to know any places that's gonna bring a big crowd of people for today's game? Tickets ran out for the Brooklyn Bridge Park so I'm gonna be watching the game by Roosevelt.
Opinions on rock fitness? How crowded does it get (would primarily be going before 5pm). Do they have a good amount of stair climbers? And just curious about overall etiquette of other members?
Hey all,
Wondering if there are any places having outdoor watch parties for Mexico/Ecuador today? I can go see the game in BK but thought staying close to Queens (I live in Elmhurst) might be more fun for today's game
My niece and her bf are visiting and wanted to arrange a photo shoot at either Astoria Park or LIC Gantry around the 2nd week of August.
Anyone here a photographer with services available?
Hey neighbors!
A few of us are organizing a new 18+ soccer club, and we’re trying to get some local players from the neighborhood involved.
We are building this to be a city-wide community, hosting matches at fields across Queens, Manhattan, and Brooklyn to make it easy for everyone to catch a game regardless of where you are commuting from or hanging out that week.
The Details:
To keep things community-first and respect the local subreddit rules, I'm not dropping external links or ads here.
If you’re down to play or want info on our upcoming games, drop a comment below or shoot me a DM! I'd love to get you connected to the group.
Dm me girls. Please
I witnessed a semi truck collide into multiple parked cars on 94 st between 34 and 35th Ave before driving east on 35th Ave towards Junction Blvd. I got pictures of the license plate and spoke to police at the 115th precinct. If your car got hit I’m so sorry- he almost hit a family with kids too, he was driving crazy. I’m going to call the company tomorrow, whoever this was shouldn’t be driving. Let me know if you were affected and I’ll provide what I can for your insurance.
I've noticed several concrete (I think) blocks with NYPD printed on them, placed on the sidewalks of 76th, 78th and 79th Streets recently. I thought they were temporary for the soccer watch party last week, but they're still present.
Has the NYPD said what these are for, to anyone's knowledge? Are they permanent?
The city allowing Food Bazaar to build a parking garage entrance on 34 ave has effectively removed a block from paseo park. There’s a constant stream of car traffic now, meaning the barrier is never in place and cars treat it as a normal street. Other drivers park illegally along the divider. Great work everyone! Can’t wait to see the community lose this treasure block-by-block.
We pick up trash in the neighborhood.
Summer is officially here, and so is our birthday!
For our 50th anniversary weekend, we’re bringing back the spirit of the old HH Shuttle, just like we did on opening day in 1976, with special vintage train rides between the Museum at Court St and Hoyt-Schermerhorn on Saturday, July 4 and Sunday, July 5. These rides are included with regular Museum admission, so no separate ticket is needed, but advance registration is recommended.
We’ll also have longer, ticketed Nostalgia Rides throughout the summer for anyone who wants a bigger trip through the system on our vintage fleet. We’re headed to Coney Island on Saturday, July 18 and the Rockaways on Sunday, August 16.
Find upcoming ride info and tickets here: nytransitmuseum.org/nostalgia-rides. Hope to see some of you aboard!
*Please note: Vintage equipment for all rides is TBD; routes are subject to change.
Jackson Heights in a Cup - July 12
South Asia × Latin America Fusion Party celebrating the way immigrant communities influence one another, collaborate, and create something entirely new. Few places embody that spirit better than Jackson Heights, where generations of South Asian and Latin American families have helped build one of New York City’s most vibrant neighborhoods.
What to expect:
✨ Tamil Nadu cold brew topped with Peruvian lúcuma cold foam
✨ A Latin American take on India’s beloved coffee drink, Filter Kaapi
✨ Traditional and fusion foods, drinks, and desserts from both regions
Last year’s favorites included Tres Leches Ras Malai cupcakes, Mango Agua Frescas, Kaapi Horchatas, and Desi Pastelitos. Stay tuned for this year’s vendor lineup! Looking to finalize vendors this week.
