Leash your dogs in bellwoods, you're not special

Sorry, I know this has been posted many times, but fuck.

I was walking through bellwoods with my toddler today and there were so many unleashed dogs just running around, people not even paying attention to them while they run around and get into people's space.

One couple's black poodle had just obviously disturbed some people minding their own business at a picnic table (they were looking around for an owner), so when the dog ran up to it's owner right next to me on the path I said "Why don't you leash your dog buddy?" and his response was "Why don't you call the cops dummy?"

I don't even care about the law, it's about having respect for the people around you. Thats what laws like this are about. Basic fucking respect for the people who share the city with you.

Also I shit you not right after that interaction Susur Lee walked by with two off leash dogs lmao

People are shit.

Are all taxi drivers just outright scammers?

In the past few years I've only taken (or attempted to take) a taxi a handful of times and every SINGLE time they've quoted me some outrageous price ($40 for a 10 minutes drive, $100 from Rebel to Union) and one time I was told the card reader was broken so I was driven to a nearby ATM to withdraw cash and then driven home, all with the meter still running.

I usually try to take transit/bike share everywhere but sometimes I'm carrying stuff or running late and a taxi happens to be right there but every single one I've interacted wants to scam me.

So what exactly are we paying property taxes for? Lol

It’s 1a.m. in Etobicoke residential/family area. Our neighbours have a full outdoor party with an actual DJ blasting music loud enough for the whole street to hear. I’m not even exaggerating. Multiple neighbours reached out to us as well trying to figure wth is going on too.

We did what everyone says you’re supposed to do. We walked over politely and asked if they could turn it down because people have children trying to sleep and others have work in the morning.

They didn’t care. The music kept going.
So we called 311.

The agent told us they don’t respond to one-night noise complaints anymore and that enforcement is focused on chronic problems that happen repeatedly over weeks, months, or even years.

In other words, unless your neighbours make your life miserable on a regular basis, you’re basically out of luck. LOL

So… what exactly are we paying property taxes for if there’s no enforcement when someone is keeping an entire neighbourhood awake after midnight with a DJ?

Has anyone else been told the same thing by 311? If this is now the reality, that’s honestly outrageous

I have reported it to 14 division ,so ,they have my information .please if somebody finds it please there’s a reward. It’s very sentimental to me and it means so much to me and I would appreciate it so greatly should anyone find it and return it.
I’d be so grateful. Thank you so much for your attention to this message and have a wonderful summer and stay dehydrated. Mirandasandra8383@gmail.com

Got stamped on at the tube station and the non-apology said everything

This morning at the station, a woman in stiletto heels stepped right on my foot. Properly stamped, it hurt. She turned around, ready to apologise, looked at my face, and the apology just… deflated. A mumbled half word and she was gone.

Maybe I’m reading too much into it. But when you’re an immigrant, you notice the difference between the sorry people give each other and the sorry you get. It happens in tiny doses, a colder tone, a shorter apology, and each one on its own is deniable.

Anyone else who moved here experienced this? The small stuff, not the big obvious stuff. I’m curious whether it’s just me or whether other people clock it too.

Does the government just want everybody to be poor?

It honestly feels like I’ve been forced into poverty by all levels of government. I’ve lost all my savings, I can’t get a job, with a degree and 500-1000 applications, I can’t afford my rent anymore. I do career counseling and my career counsellor doesn’t even show up to her own appointments. I’m never going to be able to afford to buy a home or other wealth building assets, even though both my parents were millionaires.

What the fuck is the problem with this country? Why should any of us continue to be proud of this society that we have? I feel like my own government hates me and has been punishing me and all the younger generations ever since I was born, while actively bailing out millionaires and billionaires and engaging in increasing levels of corruption and bad faith. Nothing that I can do to build a better life works anymore.

Infrastructure

Our infrastructure if falling apart right before our eyes.

Today a large sinkhole formed on avenue Rd and ridley. Another is forming at Lawrence and avenue. They just 'patch it'

Now the road collapsed at ridley. Maybe we should be spending the tax dollars on infrastructure instead of

Artscapes, tiled art in the ttc, fifa condoms, fifa statues, skate decks, and more and more and more condos.

You know by adding more condos you add to the drain on the infrastructure? Cities that are broke don't do the above stuff. They use it to maintain the city.

Lived here all of my life and I've never seen the roads in this kind of shape.

It's so bad in sections it could knock a tampon out of a nun.

Congrats city! Take another 24% raise for your effort. Jesus on a bike.

Hate crime in area, synagogues shot at, homelessness at all time high.

But out of the 2000 rental units promised by chow, only 225 will be affordable rent geared to income. The rest is market value.

I'm sure the people who use the cne homeless shelter were so happy chow closed it for a month for fifa.

At least now they have some place to go in the heat. What a pathetic excuse for a city council.

Friends, you made a difference to lighten up r/Toronto

Remember last weekend when I was sad because my chicken using the crosswalk was removed from r/ toronto?

There's now a post up asking if bunnies are dangerous, and it hasn't been removed!

There's also a pic of 5 teen raccoons in a leafy tree that also hasn't been removed. (I'd rather see fatso raccoons on a branch over a dumpster reaching for fries, but I'll take it

Thanks everyone

Is all summer gonna be so hot and miserable?!

Literally unbearable heat when you don’t have a decent ac, can’t travel and no access to pools. Is it really gonna be like this for 90ish more days? I don’t know how my POTS is gonna handle this summer. Ice on face and neck only goes so far lol.

You do not deserve a tip for takeout

This post is mentioned every now and then, and now it's my turn to use the Xbox.

If I come to your business and get takeout, or the entire structure of your business is takeaway — an increasingly common business model that we should actively support to lower overhead costs for new businesses — you will not be getting a tip.

Apparently many people who work in the GTA don't seem to understand that tips fall under "gratuity" and not service charges, meaning that they are completely optional. This means that, as someone who is working at a business, you should never expect gratuity to be part of your earnings.

That you believe that you are owed more than 15% of every purchase is something I strongly file away under "that's a you problem". I'm not sure why you think this is income you are owed, but I think you need to reevaluate your circumstances if this is something you're relying on. Either it's time to talk to your boss about a raise, or maybe it's time to do some introspection and realize that you want more out of life.

You can pout, give me a dirty look, or even choose active aggression, but I'm not going to fold and give you more of my very limited income out of guilt. In fact, I probably won't return to your business and warn others I know that this is what they can expect. Not a very wise tactic for the business in the long-run, is it?

If you have the opportunity, I invite you to take a trip to East Asia and evaluate the business model there. Rather than annoying your customers for a couple of extra bucks, the strategy is to get more customers and sell more. And guess what? It actually works really well and builds loyalty and a steady flow of customers. It occasionally even increases patronage and profit margins, since people will recommend the business to others they know. Wild concept, I know.

Toronto Tipping Culture?

My friends and I went to a restaurant the other day and at the end of the night, one of my friends picked up the tab. Then our server came by and started cleaning up our table. When we pointed out that we were still eating some of it, the server said, "Fine." And walked off.

We were really confused but chalked it up to the server having a bad night. At the end of our dinner, we slowly got up to use the bathroom in groups and the server just confronts my friend who paid and said, "Was there something wrong with my service?" My friend looked confused and said, "No. You were great." The server then asked again if my friend was sure. Again, my friend nodded and thanked the server. The server walked off again in a huff. I asked my friend how much he tipped and he said 18%. Then on our way out, the server just says, "If you weren't happy with my service, you could have just told me instead of giving me a crummy $16. If you don't make enough, don't eat here. It's rude." (Our bill was roughly $200.) We all looked at my friend and he looked really confused. But before we could say anything, the server shut the door and locked it.

My friend then pulls out his phone to check his receipt and realized that he must have entered the wrong tip percentage (I believe him because he usually tips really well compared to the rest of us.) Since the restaurant was closed, we all kind of awkwardly went home for the night.

The next day during our lunch break, my friend said he had to stop by that restaurant to make up the tip from last night. I went with him because we were getting food together after. He explained the situation, specified the appearance of the server, and left $30 in cash with one of the front house people. On our way out, we ran into the server from last night who I guess was coming in for his shift. He then says, "Back again to stiff me?" and my friend apologized and tried to explain again. But before he really even finished, the server said, "Right. Nice save, asshole." And then walked away.

Honestly, I understand that tips are expected in Canada and I know my friend was the one that screwed up the tip in the first place but it felt like the server was hella aggressive. I feel like my friend did a lot to fix the situation, especially since the restaurant wasn't really close to where we worked either. Like, I'm kind of upset for my friend but he said that tipping culture is "insane" in Toronto and "it is what it is." Is tipping culture really that crazy in Toronto?

If you see someone wearing a mask, please do not photograph us / shout at us / stare us down.

I wear a mask every day whenever I go out. I've been doing so since March 2020. And in certain - otherwise lovely - neighbourhoods, people stare. me. down. I've also had people shout "why are you masking?" from restaurant patios. It doesn't stop me from going out, doing yoga, attending meetup events, hiking, and meeting friends. But it does make it tough to visit some of my fave areas in the city and patronize their cute cafes, boutiques, and beach-adjacent businesses. I've even had a grown adult stop on the sidewalk (!!) and take a photo of me in one of these neighbourhoods? AHHhhhX)

In 2026, many people of all ages and identities are wearing masks for different reasons:

  • they're receiving cancer treatment (or have a family member who is) and want to avoid anything that may harm their compromised immune system.
  • they have read about the long-term effects of COVID and have personally evaluated that the risks of being maskless are too much for them (and them alone - not imposing their standards on anyone else [this is me])
  • they are indeed sick and want to protect others
  • they want to avoid smog / smoke
  • people cough / sneeze without covering their mouths on the subway
  • to avoid the stench that tends to be present at fan conventions / certain raves / on transit

I know that it's super hot right now, which means (1) seeing someone with a protective face mask makes people curious about how comfortable that can possibly be (my mask doesn't feel hot or sweaty even in the heat -- then again, I tend to run cool) and (2) more curious people are taking time off work, walking for leisure, sitting on patios, and generally being outside of their offices more, so they are seeing more people like me wearing masks.

I don't mind curiosity about why I mask, but please try not to be rude or conspicuous with expressing discomfort. I'm just trying to go about my life in a way that keeps me - and my family - safe.

I might be a small woman but I will body check you if you don't make space for me on the sidewalk. I've been too passive about this for too long.

I'm tired of putting my life, and the lives of cyclists, at risk by walking on the road so you can chit chat in a straight line.

And I'd bet money that your conversation isn't interesting enough to justify that behaviour.

You are fully capable of moving behind or up front momentarily so others can pass.

I don't care if you lack spacial awareness or have an inflated sense of self or are operating on two brain cells, and I sure as hell don't care that it's FIFA, the sidewalks are for everyone.

Dear Tourists taking pictures around the city…

Why won’t you move to the side instead of randomly popping in my way on the sidewalk? is that what you’d do back home? why won’t you check around stopping in the middle of everyones way?

Let’s be considerate and enjoy the city together please.

Low class people all over the city nowadays

I now understand why people would rather drive and spend money on a car and gas rather than have to interact with the types of people we find downtown.

No, I’m not talking about people who are unhoused or addicted to substances. That’s beyond their control and I don’t blame them for the situation that they’re in.

what I’m talking about are the people who go out of their way to make others’ experiences in the city absolutely misérable. Just today, I was walking back from work, a group of guys were blasting music and one of them slammed the metal pole so hard to the music that it made my eardrum feel weird. I thought someone fired a gun!

There was a police car right next to them and well they didn’t do shit. Not that I expect our PD to be capable of doing anything anyway. But back to my point. What makes someone wake up in the morning and decide to do this?

When did all these types of people arrive in the city? I have never experienced as much antisocial behavior as I have recently. People driving while holding their phones, cars honking for no reason at all, people blatantly cutting in line at events or restaurants… just a general “Fuck you I’ll do what I want” type attitude.

Police is clearly not policing. Common people just pay more to get cars. I kind of see why people would rather spend a lot more money than go ride the TTC or walk around downtown because all you see nowadays is this type of people who display such low class antisocial behavior.

I just think of where they received their education. Is this normal behavior? Did they even FINISH their education? I obviously think we need to give people the benefit of the doubt BUT it seems like a lot of them are trying to provoke others or get a reaction and that’s basically the recipe for disaster.

The traffic from the Portugal VS Croatia game shows just how bad our city planning is

TTC over stuffed and ground to a halt, police closing lanes without advance notice and closures not being reported on Google Maps, and crowd control failing spectacularly all because of one game is a spectacular failure on the part of this city to plan for anything meaningful.

All city, police, and transit officials that contributed to this mess need to be removed from office and replaced with someone who can rub their brain cells together to figure out how to manage world class events.
