The Battle of Iquique (May 21, 1879) was a naval engagement between Peru and Chile during the War of the Pacific. The battle took place between the Huáscar, commanded by Miguel Grau, and the Esmeralda, commanded by Arturo Prat, off the port of Iquique. Although the Huáscar sank the Esmeralda, the battle is remembered more for its figures than for the military outcome: Prat became a national hero in Chile for his final boarding action, and Grau in Peru for his chivalry and respect for the enemy
