The ancient Roman city of Aquincum
Founded by the Celts, Aquincum (today Budapest) became an important military and civic centre and the capital city of Pannonia Inferior. The city had 40,000-50,000 inhabitants, who built 2 amphitheaters, many baths and temples. It flourished in the 2nd and early 3rd centuries but later declined due to weakening imperial power and outside attacks. The city was largely destroyed by the late 4th century and in 409 AD, Germanic tribes and the Huns invaded the region.
I visited the Aquincum museum today and it was awesome as always.

What are the top 3 songs rn where you live and how do you like them?
I js want some diversity in my playlists.
So, here, the top 3 are:
- PRNSTR by KKevin, Bruno X Spacc and Vini
- Kiskece by DESH and Young Fly
- Kik Ezek by Bruno, KKevin and Vini
(All 3 are Hungarian)
And like, I can listen to them, not terrible but like I don’t love them either, especially the 2nd one.
“Nolan is woke, the Odyssey will flop.”
I mean, it wasn’t an amazing film, had its flaws, but it was a great film. The script wasn’t good, but Matt Damon does an amazing job imo, and the whole doom and gloom about Helen and Sinon (not even Achilles btw) was so exaggerated for the solid 3 minutes they’re in.

Medieval walled city of Kőszeg in Western Hungary
(3d reconstruction)
First mentioned in 802 AD, Kőszeg was an important centre of trade known for its wine production, leather- and metalworking and military importance.
Today, it’s a minor town of around 12,000 people, with an exceptionally well preserved medieval core.

How similar was Eastern Europe to Western Europe in the high middle ages?
(Poland, Bohemia and Hungary)
I noticed that like 90% of the medieval history we learn is about Western Europe, development of cities, trade routes (Hanseatic and Levant), politics (I mean institutionally), universities and just overall, Eastern europe always felt a bit “empty” compared to the West.
My question would be about how similar were they to Western Europe, whether they were as involved in trade as the West and how wealthy and developed they were.

How is living in high elevation towns/cities?

Canabae amphitheater in the ancient city of Aquincum (145-161 AD)
Hi!
I like to revisit nearby ancient sites in Budapest every now and then and today I decided to walk up to the amphitheater of Canabae.
It‘s the bigger of the two Roman amphitheaters built in Aquincum, in an elliptical shape, measuring 132x108 meters (433x356ft). The city of Aquincum was home to about 50-60000 people in its height in the late 2nd century, the city was protected by 6000 legionaries.
The amphitheater was built during the reign and in honor of Emperor Antoninus Pius between 145 and 161 AD according to a relief found nearby. It could fit around 15000 spectators and it could be flooded to simulate naval battles using the underground water tunnel system.
After the collapse of the Western Roman Empire, it was used as a fort by the Lombards and possibly by the Franks and the Magyars. However, by the later middle ages, the amphitheater was buried and the site was called Királydomb (“King hill”).
It was excavated in the 20th century and it‘s completely free to visit today (when I went there, I saw a bunch of guys playing football lol).
