Tips for getting vintage road bike?

My wife and I are hoping to replace our heavy department store bikes that we use to bike roads and paved trails. I really like the vintage road bikes available in my area as I think they offer a great balance of weight and strength, offering all we need and for a great deal ($80-$120). Some of the bikes I’m looking at currently are a Raleigh Technium 440, Panasonic Villager, 1975 Raleigh 10 speed, and an unknown 1970’s Japanese bike. Others are available but include some work that may be beyond my abilities. The sellers for the bikes I’m looking at all indicate they are in working condition but I don’t know much about bikes. Does anyone have any tips or suggestions before I make a deal?

Anyone read one second after or other disaster books? How did it shape your view of preparedness?

I just finished one second after and felt it did a great job fleshing out details most wouldn’t consider in a total collapse scenario. The dialogue was a little clunky but overall I think it was a great read. What books stood out to you in regard to making you think to prepare in ways you hadn’t previously considered?

Florida friendly textile plants?

I would love to try growing something like flax for the seed and fibers to make fabric. I know some weeds like Caesarweed can be used to make rope, but does anyone know of a native or Florida friendly plant that can be processed to make textiles?

Trying out Hügelkultur

I wanted to try growing some longevity spinach and thought it would also be fun to have it on a Hügelkultur mound so it’ll have more surface area to grow on and a moisture/nutrient source. Anyone have any luck with this method?

Just how less effective do you feel handguns are to rifles/shotguns?

Handguns are very convenient due to their size and weight and obviously any gun is better than no gun. That said, handgun and pistol caliber rifle ballistics with the best cartridges struggle to meet the capabilities of the most basic rifle and shotgun ammo. I carry a handgun but when I’m home I would never think to grab my pistol, instead I would grab either my rifle or shotgun. Do you feel there’s a significant divide between the capability of handguns and long guns or do you feel handguns are capable enough that you don’t feel that a rifle or shotgun is worth getting to if you ever needed it?

Best staple food crops?

My goal for my garden is to subsidize my family’s grocery bill so I garden with the intent to grow nutritious food crops that are calorie and nutritionally dense. I’ve had good luck with sweet potatoes, pigeon pea, peanuts, green beans, Roma tomatoes and am now trying yardlong beans and Seminole pumpkin. I would like to expand and try new plants like Chaya and moringa along the edge of my property but I would like to do a few rows of hugelkultur beds (logs buried under compost) too so I’m looking for suggestions for smaller plants that would do well on those long mounds. I have had good luck with bush beans so that’s my backup but I would like to see if anyone has better suggestions.

Primitive camping along the Crystal River or Rainbow River?

I have a Grumman sailing canoe and would like to take it along a river and primitive camp overnight. I’m from Tampa and have heard these rivers are great to canoe/kayak but is there anywhere along the rivers that are feasible to do primitive camping?

What do you stock in your deep pantry?

Twice a month I budget $20 to top up my deep pantry. I try to get things with long shelf lives, are decently nutritious, and are things we would cycle through regularly to ensure nothing goes bad. I also try and keep at least a week’s worth of food that can be eaten as is if we need to flee at a moments notice or won’t have the time/environment to cook (i.e. hurricane evacuation). I’m planning my next run to include other things like spices, jars of garlic, vinegar, and jellies/jams because good food boosts moral in hard times. What do you stock in your deep panty and is there anything you recommend I add?

45 ACP vs 5.7

Do you lean towards the “stopping power” of 45 ACP or the high capacity of a 5.7? And why?

Is the Victra 12 worth it?

I really like my SBS’d Mossberg 590 and think it might be good to replace my suppressed AUG as a HD gun. I love how handy and quiet my AUG is but my thinking is that something like #4 buckshot would be more effective than 556 at close range and also greatly reduce the likelihood of over penetrating/passing through a wall and hitting a neighbor (I’m in the suburbs). My issue is that I only consider it a viable HD gun if I could shoot it without deafening/concussing myself if I were to shoot indoors. This is why I like my suppressed AUG and before that a suppressed pistol.

The Victra 12 seems to be one of the more modern shotgun suppressors (better performance than the Seg12 and better features than the Salvo12), but I don’t have the opportunity to hear one in person. I’d like to set up my mossberg with one but would be bummed to spend the money and add up to 12” to my OAL for only minimal sound reduction. I know shotgun suppressors are never as quiet as rifle/pistol suppressors but so long as it would prevent me from flash banging myself if I ever needed to fire a shot indoors I would consider it worthwhile. Can anyone attest to its performance and if they think it would work in this case?

I have an SBR’d lower I’m not sure what to do with so I’m tempted to make a “PDW” style AR akin to the Colt Commando. I’m trying to keep it as short as possible so I’m thinking of using my 10.5” barrel (without a suppressor) and law tactical folder. My concern is how loud this would be. My go to rifle is a suppressed 16” AUG that I appreciate I can shoot it as is without ear protection, so I’ve been spoiled with a nice quiet rifle. Would you consider a 10.5” with a standard birdcage flash hider too loud for practical purposes? Also if you have any suggestions for other fun/practical builds let me know because I’ve got several lowers and uppers I feel I have little use for ever since I got my AUG.

Update: I misspoke/misstyped, I don’t shoot my suppressed rifles without ear pro, I mean to say they’re quiet enough that I could shoot in a home defense situation without blowing an ear drum. I always have ear pro but this is the reason I only shoot suppressed guns, BECAUSE I want to protect my hearing. I just don’t know what to do with my AR stuff because after getting an AUG a suppressed AR seems too long for my liking
