All the scripts Bengali was written in

So, Bengali is written in the Bengali Alphabet which is a version of the Bengali-Assamese script (Also called the Eastern Nagari script) for well Bengali. Its been used to write Bengali for most if not all of its history. The Bengali-Assamese Script descends from the Gaudi Script which is also the ancestor of the Odia, Maithili and Newari scripts. All of which ultimately descend from the Brahmic script which is the ancestor for all the South Asian Abugidas like Devanagari, Tamil or Punjabi. But there were many instances in history were Bengali was written with another script. Those are given below:

  1. Odia script: Small number of people in Midnapore, a region on the border between Odisha and West Bengal wrote Bengali in the Odia script.

  2. Devanagari, Kaithi and Tirhuta: In the border areas between West Bengal and Bihar, some Bengali communities used to write Bengali in the Devanagari, Kaithi and Tirhuta scripts. In Sylhet and Bankura, modified versions of the Kaithi script had historical prominence mainly among Muslim communities. The variant in Sylhet was almost identical to the Baithali Kaithi Script with the exception of Sylheti Nagri possessing a matra.

  3. The Arabic script: Until the 19th century, many varieties of the Arabic script were used to write Bengali across the west to Meherpur and east to Chattogram called Dobhashi. Heck, the 14th century scholar Nur Qubt Alam composed poetry in Bengali only using the persian alphabet. After the partition of India, Pakistan tried to impose the Perso-Arabic script for Bengali but it was met with resistance and contributed to the Bengali language movement.

  4. The Latin Alphabet: in the 16th century, Portuguese missionaires started the tradition of using the Latin Alphabet to write Bengali. The portuguese standard didn't receive much growth but a few Roman Bengali works relating to Christianity and Grammar were printed as far as Lisbon in 1743. The portuguese were followed by the English and French respectively whose works mostly related to the grammar and transliteration of Bengali. The first version of the Aesops Fables was printed in Roman Bengali based off English phonological by Scottish linguist John Gilchrist. Consecutive attempts to establish the Latin Alphabet for Bengali continued across every century during these times and have been supported by many people like Sunti Kumar Chatterji, Muhammad Enamul Haq, Muhammad Qudrat-i-Khuda etc. The Digital Revolution also played a part in the adoption of the Latin script to write Bengali and certain social media influencers and publishers are publishing entire novels in Bengali written in the Latin Alphabet.

And thats it! Bye now :P

Urdu still spoken in Bangladesh

Did you know Urdu is still spoken in Bangladesh? Its called Dhakaiya Urdu and despite what the name may suggest its used for all types of Urdu spoken in Bangladesh. The pictures above show the different words between standard Urdu and Dhakaiya Urdu. There are two main dialects of Dhakaiya Urdu, theres the one spoken in Old Dhaka by Sobbas and Khosbas community, while the other one is spoken by the stranded Pakistanis in Bangladesh called Muhajirs. The history behind Dhakaiya Urdu is interesting.

So, Jahangirnagar (now Dhaka) was the capital of the Bengal Subah and during this time, many Urdu speaking Muslim merchants poured in from North India eventually residing in Dhaka. The descendants of these settlers became known as Khusbas and many other names which meant "happily settled". This dialect also got affected by the Bengali Muslims in Old Dhaka which their dialect came to be known as Dhakaiya Kutti. Then many other Urdu speaking poets migrated to Dhaka in the 18th century. But after the Bengali language movement in 1952, the Urdu culture decreased significantly with Urdu speaking families switching to Bengali to avoid controversy and during the liberation war in 1971, many Urdu-speaking families migrated to Pakistan. Which caused Urdu to be used less only spoken by a few families in Dhaka. Furthermore, the independent Bangladesh focused on Bengali, which alienated the Urdu speaking families more. The dialecr is still be preserved by different cultural organisations though.

Dhakaiya Urdu doesn't have a a standardised script but its mostly written in the Urdu Nastaliq script or the Bengali Script.

And thats it bye :P

Arabic Tamil

(Picture from Omniglot)

Arwi Tamil is a variety of the Perso-Arabic script used to write Tamil used by Muslims in Tamil Nadu and Sri Lanka. Its meant to teach other Tamil Muslims how to read the Quran so they can read other literary works in Arabic. Arwi is used to write about Sufism, laws and medicines and well religious works. Its used because its thought that using that mispronunciations are less likely if its transliterated into the Tamil Alphabet.

Its not used very often but its taught in some schools in Southern India and attempts to use it more are increasing.

Ok bye now :P
