Has anyone actually used the price match guarantee successfully?

I found a specific milwaukee drill kit online at a smaller tool store for fifty bucks cheaper than the shelf price at my local warehouse. The policy says they will beat it by ten percent but every time I try to claim it the manager finds some tiny loophole like the model number having a different suffix or the competitor being out of stock

How do you transition your parents into retirement when they have no savings?

My folks are approaching sixty five and have basically zero superannuation because they ran a small cash business that went under a decade ago. They are expecting to just live on the age pension but they still rent and have no assets

What’s the biggest misconception customers have about tradies?

As an electrician, one thing that always stands out to me is how many customers think tradies are only charging for the time spent physically on site. People see a job take an hour and assume it should cost next to nothing, without thinking about the years of training, licensing, tools, testing gear, travel, insurance, fault finding, quoting and everything else behind the scenes

Why is it impossible to find a decent rental that allows pets down here?

I have been searching for a basic two bedroom unit around Moonah or Glenorchy and every single listing has a strict no animals policy. I have got a ten year old cat who literally spends the entire day sleeping on a rug, not a giant Great Dane. It feels like landlords would rather leave a place completely empty than trust a local tenant with a clean record

What are you guys charging for a standard EV charger install?

Just trying to gauge the market at the moment for residential single phase EV charger installs. Customer supplies the unit, straight run back to the board about fifteen metres through the ceiling space. What is a fair rate in Vic?

Upgrading from a cheap bcf combo

I have been using a budget fifty dollar combo from bcf for about 3 years now and the line guides are starting to rust out. Looking to treat myself to a decent setup for targeting bream and flathead in the river. Budget is around $200- 300$, what rod and reel combo should I look at?

What is the worst financial advice you have ever received?

An uncle of mine tried to convince me to tip my entire emergency fund into a sketchy crypto token that his mate recommended, claiming it was a guaranteed ten times return within six months. When I told him I preferred keeping my cash in a high-interest savings account and broad-market ETFs, he laughed and said I was wasting my twenties being boring

Are there any casual trivia nights left on a Thursday

A few friends want to start a weekly trivia tradition but Thursday is the only night we can all manage. Most of the pubs we looked at seem to run theirs on Tuesday or Wednesday. Does anyone know a good spot around North Hobart or the city that does a Thursday night setup?

What do you guys usually do when a customer tries to negotiate the price after the job is already finished and signed off?

Had a job like this recently where everything was agreed upfront, job’s done, tested, cleaned up, all good, then at the end they suddenly start saying it “took less time than expected” and try to knock money off the final invoice

Customers trying to negotiate after the job is finished

Had a client today try to haggle the invoice after I had already finished the install and packed the van. Everything was quoted and agreed upon in writing beforehand. Why do people think a trade invoice is just a suggestion?

Is the Hobart rental market still this cooked?

I’ve been looking at a few rentals in Hobart before deciding whether to move and it honestly looks pretty intense. Every listing seems to have heaps of people at inspections and nothing stays up for long.

Is it actually like that in reality right now, or is it just the more popular places getting all the attention?

Is it time to pivot to hv specialist work to future proof the career?

I am seeing ads for senior hv roles pushing 145k plus while standard domestic is stalling. With all the new battery energy storage projects like koolunga kicking off it feels like that is where the real money is going to be for the next decade. How hard is the actual bridge from residential to industrial hv?

Should I be topping up my super while I am still in my twenties?

My parents keep telling me to do voluntary contributions for the tax benefits but it feels weird putting money away that I can't touch for forty years. Is the compounding really that much better if you start this early?

Job market

Healthcare, government, hospitality and construction seem to have decent availability but what's it actually like for people working in tech, finance or creative industries? I hear a lot of people either work remotely and moved here for the lifestyle, or they've made peace with a pay cut compared to Melbourne or Sydney

Are hardware store layouts getting harder to navigate lately?

I spent ages today trying to find a specific type of drill bit and even the staff member I asked wasn’t totally sure which aisle it was in. Feels like everything is organised differently depending on the store, and what used to be a quick in-and-out trip now turns into a bit of a treasure hunt.

What is your go-to response when a client says "it was working fine until you touched it"?

Had a classic today. Fixed a faulty pendant in the kitchen and suddenly the client is claiming the garage door opener is acting up because I was messing with the wires. It is usually just a coincidence or they have had a pre-existing issue they only noticed because they are now paying attention to everything in the house. I usually just try to calmly explain how the circuits are separated at the board, but some people just do not want to hear it

Do you charge differently for jobs in newer estates vs older suburbs?

Some older suburbs can be a pain with parking, tight access, traffic, no space for materials and constant moving vehicles around, while newer estates are usually easier but sometimes further out.

Do you factor stuff like that into your quotes or just wear the extra time and hassle as part of the job?
