Both of those Atlantic disturbances: gone

There were a couple of disturbances over the past few days in the central and eastern Atlantic but both have dissipated. Coming into peak season soon and it's still quiet (knocks on wood).

Elissa coming home

https://preview.redd.it/vput3aoa5kjh1.png?width=1873&format=png&auto=webp&s=7d4ef97ed8ffcb277c24a807f1390dc5ccf045bd

If you're on the East End check out the Elissa coming back to home port. I just found out about this otherwise I'd be down there. A good viewing spot to avoid the crowds in the Pier 21 area would be out near east beach at the end of the Seawall at old Ft San Jacinto. East Beach is probably getting a pretty good show right about now. Found a webcam that looks east over the Royal Carib terminal. It should be visible on here in maybe 30 minutes or so. Trip planning

Question for the locals. We are planning a trip to the area in mid-to-late Sept. Would like to see all the main sights in the red circle. Is it possible to use Rapid City as home base (lodge/hotel) and set out daily from there to hit everything without feeling rushed? Thinking Devils Tower/Spearfish area one day, Custer area, Rushmore, Crazy Horse another day, Badlands/Wall another day, with each day returning to RC. We like to drive so that's not an issue. We also like to get out of the car and enjoy nature/sights on easy to moderate trails. Wife also likes to work in touristy shops and quirky things along the way. Any/all feedback is appreciated. Also, how is the smoke situation up there? (also posted this in the tourist megathread so this can be taken down if necessary)

Supporting local business

Picked up a six while on the island yesterday. Good stuff if you like Kolsch style beers, which I find refreshing during these hot summer days. P.s., I’m not affiliated with the brewery in any way other than trying their product. Just trying to support local biz where I can. Same general vibe as Karbach Love Street if you’re familiar.

CruiseMapper

I had no reason to use this website until recently when some of my family went on a cruise out of Galveston. I found it quite informative. You can see the cruise line, ship, location, track, ports of call and time in port. Looks like it will be busy tomorrow morning down at the port as three cruise ships will be arriving in the 7-8 am window. I guess that's a typical Saturday morning down there during peak season... https://www.cruisemapper.com/

Tropical depression likely to form over northern Gulf

UPDATE: Monday 9 am CDT. TD2 is still out there but 'unimpressive' according to NHC. Still forecast to become a TS and gradually move west along the northern Gulf coast. https://www.star.nesdis.noaa.gov/goes/sector_band.php?sat=G19&sector=smv&band=GEOCOLOR&length=24

Forward track has slowed just a bit. Initially this was well inland TX by Friday 1 pm. As we know from past storms, slow movers and stalls are not good when you're on the so called dirty side of the storm. https://www.nhc.noaa.gov/refresh/graphics_at2+shtml/201146.shtml?cone#contents

One thing I've noticed is that the models I've checked (Euro, ICON, GFS) all have this thing dissipating inland Louisiana over the next few days. NHS is being more conservative with the forecast and keeps it further south and alive for a few days longer. They've also lowered the max winds (was 60, now 50),

One of my favorite pics from our trip in June

Still going through photos from our trip in June and this one is one of my favorites. Photo taken on June 14 from Toppings Lake Rd just east of 89 looking southwest (across the highway from Cunningham Cabin). A bit of zoom, maybe 2x used on an iPhone camera. I'm guessing the horses were part of the stable at Triangle X Ranch. Also guessing the area looks a bit different now with all the warm weather recently. Love this place.

Hotel/lodge/resort recommendations

My wife and I are planning a short, maybe 4 day, trip up to Tahoe in August. Would appreciate feedback on best overall location to stay. We'd be flying into Reno/Tahoe and renting a vehicle.

We enjoy the outdoors and driving around, enjoying the scenery, looking for the next little side road to explore. We like to check out small towns/villages for shopping, go on short, generally easy hikes. Top priority would be a room with lake front view/balcony. We're not too picky on food choices but in terms of spend, we would prioritize a 'room with a view' over $$$ restaurants. We're not really into 'group tours' but maybe one of those boat rides on the lake would be fun.

Thoughts on location (north/south) and even specific properties would be appreciated. I've done some preliminary research on the area but would like some tips from locals, thanks.

Possible Lightning Strike Causes Apartment Fire

Correct me if I'm wrong but I think this was at The Pearce behind Tranquility Lake on Egret Bay (that's where Google Maps places the address given in the report). Happened during that massive deluge yesterday afternoon. Haven't seen reports of any injuries, which is fortunate. I did see one report on social media of a pet that didn't make it out unfortunately. Tough on those who lost everything.
