There’s RBF and there’s RGL (resting goose leg)

Sunshine/vitamin D?
My quail are 5 weeks old (BBW) and are finally getting big enough to move into the hutch style cage with compartments. They’re still in a grow out box all together for now.
All of my other birds free range during the day, but that’s not possible with the quails. Do they need direct sunlight to be healthy long term? They get fed Meat Bird feed and snacks like alfalfa and mealworms/bsfl, but would they be missing nutrients by being kept in their cage inside the barn and not getting sunlight?
Curious if anyone’s done some observations on this. TIA.
Watching ChikToks
Bari watches a recipe for Coq au Vin (don’t worry, he’s perfectly safe)
Whenever our handsome roo, Winnie, walks through the house, he stops to admire himself. This is on account of the handsomeness.
Whenever our roo Winnie gets to walk through the house, he stops in the mirror to admire himself. 😁 He’s very handsome, so it makes sense.
Most adorable friend ever!🥰🖤
Taking a little nap. A quick video and then I watched over her from a distance.🖤🖤🖤
Not sure if this is the right sub but: is this a juvenile? I made friends with it
I think it's a juvenile, as it was asking me to spoon feed it basically. If this is the wrong sub, would appreciate directions
Sam Neill with a bird facing forward, RIP legend.
Barn swallow nest question
Context: we moved to this house in Central TX in 2021. I saw the mud marks on the eaves when we moved in, but no nests or birds for three years. Finally we got one nest that they would return to every year and sometimes double clutch. This year a second nest close but in a different area was added (it kind of dangles from the eave/bolt/lightstrand bolt is for). The second nest had babies in the spring and was successful. The old nest recently had adults return. In the past week I’ve found three dead babies on the ground. This hasn’t happened before and there are still babies and adults using the nest since I can hear them. Yes, it’s been hot but this is Texas summer-not a new or unique issue. We have plenty of bugs so it’s not starvation. The internet suggested mites and to knock down the nests every year when they’re empty.
I appreciate the bug eating abilities of the swallows and don’t want to discourage them since it took years last time for them to return (based on other things about this house, I doubt the previous owners cared about wildlife or the MBA protecting nests, I assume they knocked the nests when they listed the house). Is knocking down the nests every year something I should do to prevent mites? TIA
My first Purple Gallinule!
First time seeing a Purple Gallinule and I was shaking while I took this video (on my iPhone)! I had just woken up and went out on my balcony to have my coffee, there it was right off my back porch. This was taken in Corozal, Belize on my canal off Four Mile Lagoon.
I am pretty new to birding, moving to such a beautiful place has made me fall in love with it. Saving up now for a nice camera after this sighting!
Gray go-away bird (Crinifer concolor)
First saw these beauties on a South African bird feeder webcam, was struck by their elegance. They make amusingly cranky sounds.
This odd Blue Tit Juvenile didn't want to swallow his food
Is this happy behavior?
We came home from vacation and as soon as I let him out of his cage he did this for like 10 minutes.
I've never met a Tiel with more attitude than this ratbag
Some things of note about his care:
- He has dwarfism and cannot grow out his wings or tail properly. He has been checked and tested for everything and is a healthy little guy
- He is prone to falls and therefore sleeps in a travel cage, but he spends most of his time in the crook of my neck
- That seed stick treat has been there for 6 months at this point and serves as his punching bag 💀
