Had my RMR tested after 17 days of PSMF
Wasn't really expecting much in the way of metabolic slowdown, if any, but it fell right in line with the Katch-McArdle equation @ 10% bodyfat, I'll get it tested again when I'm done with this diet and hopefully down another 10lbs to see if there's been any significant change
It was 2131 FWIW, which is almost exactly what K-M predicted
I assume my TDEE is around 3000 given that I walk 10 miles a day, so the deficit is certainly pronounced with my @1500 cals a day (I eat 2+ lbs of veggies a day on this)
Added a hitch pin locking mechanism to my Hammer unilateral leg press
I rarely bother using this thing unilaterally anymore so I drilled a hole in tbe frame and put some sleeved pipe in there as a hitch pin holder
Weighted superslow dips PR
Got a 3rd rep with +90lbs for a PR, admittedly I had to deload at the bottom for a few seconds before attempting it but last time I tried +90lbs I only got the 2 reps
My training has become increasingly minimalist over the last couple of years, to the point that I currently train daily but just do the 2 sets per session - usually one compound and one isolation lift, I'm maximizing train sessions with minimal work per session, in line with modern HIT thinking
The slow rep cadence and higher TUT makes zero difference to the hypertrophy potential of a set but are about as safe a way to train as possible, and after a certain point, training safety and longevity become a priority if you want to keep doing this training thing into your later years
Is this intensity ok?
I'm worried that these slow reps will decrease motor unit recruitment to zero and make me look like a girl - please advise.
srsly though, this was the only set I did today for my push day (after spamming weighted dips for weeks I needed a break)
PSA - Don't measure your arms while on a PSMF
Holy crap, I'm down 20lbs in 2 weeks on my latest run and foolishly decided to measure more than just my waist this morning - and my arms and legs are each down over half an inch, which almost drove me to break out the rice cooker in a panic
Not the most motivating way to start the day even when you completely understand that it's water and glycogen and of course bodyfat that's dropped the measurements
That stringy look is objectively the worst thing about this diet, I know its transient and will vanish on a return to eating some carbs but damn, it's seriously a mind fk
Less volume = more strength
I've always teained with a HIT approach, but recently have committed to fully abbreviated, super minimalist lfting
I've dropped my volume down to a mere 2 sets per session - today's leg day was just the one set ofcleg extensions for quads and onset of deadlifts for hams/posterior chain
After only a week or so of using this super abbreviated approach I hit PRs in both lifts, despite being in a heavy calorie deficit (and being very old)
Every muscle is being trained once every 4- 5th day , which is a higher frequency than many here use, but this approach is working fine so far for me
ideal? Maybe. Efficient ? Certainly
The belt squat was about 510lb at the top, 475lbs at the bottom, the single green band setup makes the resistance profile feel great for squats and deads
Made a couple of weight horns for the modified Titan dip stand
Titans bolt holes were at a weird metric not quite 3.75" width and there's no off the rack horns that would just bolt onto there so I made my own
I wish I'd realized before this that 1.5 noninal schedule 40 pipe has as OD of 1.9 inches and is thicker and cheaper than 1.875" tube, if you dont want stainless steel weight horns then the pipe is a no brainer to use
One of these on either side and the dip stand is even sturdier to use now, plus I can have my 45s for weighted dips right on the stand.
Beefed up my Titan dip stand with additional steel bracing
It was a bit wobbly before, but this thing is rock solid now
The OEM stand was 60 bucks after a rebate for them scratching it up in shipping and breaking the plastic parts, and $50 for the additional steel
Took about an hour to weld
The bracing added maybe 20 pounds to the units total weight, but this thing is Tank tier now and hopefully won't wobble distractingly when I use it later today
Beefed up Titan dip stand
50 bucks for materials, massive upgrade in stability , only about 20lbs heavier
3 Weeks journal
Cat 1, goal 195lbs and single digits bf%. 5'11" and 50 years old, not my first rodeo
Training is unchanged since I do HIT with a very low volume already. Not natty (TRT+), using tirzepatide for appetite suppression
Walking 20k+ steps a day
Weighing myself first thing in the morning
Aug 1 - 219.4
Aug 2 - 213. 2
Aug 3 - 211.4
Aug 4 - did not weigh, no sleep due to emergency
Aug 5 - 208.3 (surprisingly large drop given the stress yesterday and terrible sleep)
Aug 6 - did not weigh, 200g carb maintenance day (to keep training intensity up)
Aug 7 - did not weigh due to maintenance day, will weigh tomorrow, back to PSMF

Post exercise trop I spike, should I be concerned?
Went into the ER for an unrelated issue and my trop I was 50
2 hours later it was 70
8 hours after the exercise it was 60
About 18 hours afterwards it was 35
Didn't retest again
Prior trop I HS were all 4-6 maximum from previous visits
I'd exercised intensely that morning, going into valsava to do a set of max weighted dips to failure then some post failure work
Took 25mg HCTZ the night before
Binge ate that night and slept incredibly badly, puked at 2am
Took 25mg ephedrine HCL and 600mg caffeine pre workout in the morning ,walked 5 miles then lifted for 30 minutes and felt slightly dizzy and sick afterwards
All other bloodwork fine, age 50, creatinine was 1 ish, kidneys fine
Ekg was unremarkable, same as prior ones
Echo was unremarkable too, 60% EF , no issues beyond minor LVH from lifting , same as prior study in 2021
Cardio PA in the ER thought it was exercise induced and reading this lines up with it, should I be concerned at all given it got to 70? (Ng/l).this has given me some health anxiety
https://www.ahajournals.org/doi/10.1161/CIRCULATIONAHA.121.056208
No creatinine kinase tested to see if it was rhabdo like from the workout. Creatinine went up to 1.5 6 hours post workout which does indicate some muscle breakdown
Dips still progressing, up to BW (215) + 160lbs
Technically I used a toe touch to get this rep, but thats still an increase from just bodyweight for 60 seconds TUT to BW+ 160lbs (into a drop set of an extra 70 seconds) in just over 2 weeks of adding dips back in
Now I'm going to chill on the heavy stuff and focus on getting more TUT with @100lbs
My Push workout wad 2 sets, and the hammer shoulder press felt light as a feather after those dips.
Back in my 30s I hit a max of BW (230)+270lbs, obviously that wasn't done in a Superslow fashion but dips have always been a pretty strong lift for me. It would be nice to get to 4 x plates but that depends on whether or not my shoulders start complaining.
beefing up a cheap Titan dip stand
I got a great deal on this Titan dip stand, but unfortunately it's pretty wobbly and the solo cross member is already starting to warp under the stress of weighted dips after just 2 weeks of use
My local metal supplier had a killer deal on off cuts of 2x2 14g tube so I ended up getting enough material to basically brace the whole thing for under $50, and some additional thicker tubes to go over the handles to beef them up to 1.5 inch OD
Should be done next week, and hopefully will be a big upgrade in stability
Concentric remodeling LVH from resistance training vs endurance training "athletes heart"
"The cavity size is normal. There is moderate concentric hypertrophy. Systolic function is normal. The estimated ejection fraction is 55-60%. Wall motion is normal; there are no regional wall motion abnormalities. Grade I diastolic dysfunction."
My echo came back with minor dysfunction, showing 60% EF but evidence of concentric LVH - I lift with a very high intensity and my BP spikes considerably while lifting
The PA said there's no correlation between resistance training and concentric remodeling and insisted that the concentric hypertrophy was from sleep apnea , but I have a clean sleep study
What is the current consensus on concentric LVH and resistance training? I've read that lifting can indeed cause it counter to what the PA was telling me, and if I should be at all concerned about this
Neural adaptions are awesome, up +40lbs in 5 days on weighted dips
The neural adaption honeymoon phase is probably going to be over in a week or so, but this was a nice motivation to keep pushing dips as my primary exercise on Push day (dips, lateral raise and pec deck were today's combo)
Going up in weight on any new lift, especially at this pace, is 100% down to learned skill factors rather than actually gaining any muscle tissue, but I'll take it
Let's see if I can get 135lbs next time for a double
Weighted superslow dips
I don't know how to update my other post with a video, so here's a new post with my new dip stand being put to use - Bodyweight is about 210 plus 3 x 25s
Forgot how much I love dips, Mike was right about them being an exceptional exercise
I took a long, long hiatus from dips after some shoulder issues, but since switching to super slow training those are a distant memory.
Titan fitness has their V bar dip stand up for about $120 including tax and delivery so I ordered one last week and its surprisingly good for the money.
Last session I did a bodyweight set to see how everything felt, and this week I hit some reps with a 45lb plate. Felt amazing, and my tris got worked in a way they haven't been worked in years
I'll put up a video of my next session when I see if I can hit some reps with 2 x 45s (these are superslow reps which are brutally hard to do on dips)
Figure that for now I'll do the dip as my main compound press on my A push workout, then pec fly and high incline machine press right after that until the novelty wears off.
Anyone else using dips as a primary pushing exercise in their current routine?

On the band can I get some other data to show other than HR while walking?
HR is the only value with the "link" icon - and I want to show step count or distance on my band face while I'm walking vs having to look at the app
How big is your meal? Getting down 4-5lbs in one go is making me just want to nap after eating
I basically eat the same thing most days,1 pound of chicken breast, 1 lb of lean beef, 1 lb cauliflower rice, 1lb of stir fry veggies and sometimes add a 12oz bag of butter nut squash to the mix
It's a lot to cram down in one go and I feel bloated and tired for hours post meal. Eating mid afternoon most days
