Shadow pickets for wind--optimal layout?

We live in Middle Tennessee. Spring and Fall are generally windy and we get periodic storms that deliver brief periods of high to very high winds (20mph+)

I'm in the middle of replacing our 8' high, 10' wide (double) gate it and about to install pickets. The old gate just had normal 8' pickets, one after the other-- this matches the rest of the fence but the gate would sometimes take a beating from the

This time, I'm considering using shadow pickets on the gate to help with wind stress on the gate and it's hardware. This should help, right?

Wondering about how much picket overlap I should plan on? Obviously, more overlap more privacy but also less benefit with regard to wind.

Moved from Edge 830 to Edge 840 and all the fonts are smaller--any way to fix?

Got a new Edge computer and migrated over all my data fields from my old one, and all the fonts got smaller. The screen is the same size so I just have a ton more white space now.

I can't find any way to adjust the font size in the settings. Am I missing something?

Pixel watch band hack

Just going to leave this here in case anyone is interested is trying it out. This is a Pixel watch band solution that I came up with back in February and have been using for the last 6 months. I've been extremely happy with the versatility it offers and have not intention of moving away from it.

The "hack" is that it takes advantage of the fantastic quick release system Garmin came up with for its line of watches. If you don't know, the Garmin system uses a clasp to attach the strap to the spring bar that's already in place like this .

It seemed like an obvious thing to try on a Pixel but I haven't seen anyone discussing it here.

And it's pretty easy to make it work. You only need to buy three things:

  1. a decent set of Pixel lugs (i bought these and they're solid with absolutely zero wiggle or rattle)

  2. a set of "fat" 22mm spring bars like these (these aren't essential but they make for a better fit with the Garmin comparable straps)

  3. any one of the *many* quick release watch straps designed for larger Garmin Fenix/Forerunner watches. I have several straps like this. They're silicone and super comfortable, offering very fine adjustability

Overall I've been very happy with this strap solution. Using the Garmin system offers a ton of strap choices for the Pixel and the quick release makes swapping straps a breeze. Obviously it's also 100% reversible back t either traditional spring bar straps or even back to the native Pixel strap system.

Also note, my experience only applies to my 45mm Pixel Watch 4 (though i wouldn't be surprised if some slight modifications could.make this work for other Pixel watches, including the 41mm sizes.

Keep getting white floating film on my ferment. Is this just inevitable??

Second attempt at fermenting peppers (mostly cayenne and serrano).

Sliced the peppers and put in a 3.5% brine inside of a glass jar. Added glass weight to keep them submerged. Lid closed and airlock added. Put jar in my 65-70 degree basement. Fermentation started within two days.

Now it's been 8 days and i have white floaties on the surface of the liquid (which I'm pretty sure it's yeast)

Should i just try to separate the peppers from the surface stuff and continue on with adding vinegar etc?

Or am I doing something fundamentally wrong??

Same thing happened with my first attempt but the yeast was growing on a couple of floating peppers so thought that was my error. Getting discouraged.

Local wildlife rehab service advised neighbor to continue feeding a fox with mange even after successful administration of medication. Is that ideal?

Neighbor noticed an (early stage) mangy red fox and we contacted a local rehab service. The local guy responded quickly and seemed to know what he was doing (install a trail cam, establish feeding routine for fox, deliver oral bravecto in food).

The fox took the med-treated food withing a a few days, and I had assume that that would be the end of it.

However, the neighbor is telling us the urban wildlife guy told her to continue to feed the fox will need to be fed "continuously" for 6 more weeks

Is this standard practice? This goes against a lot of the advice I can find online, and am now not sure of the guys' qualifications. Is there a good reason he might have told here that?

Why am I getting mold on the top of my submerged cayenne fermentation?

This is NOT a "do i have mold" post

I know that I have mold :(

I just want to try again (and not have mold)

What i did was make a 4% brine (by weight) and threw in some sliced peppers (i sliced them hoping that would get the fermentation going more quickly). I used an improvised plastic lid to keep the peppers submerged. Fermentation was in glass.

Fermentation started within 24 hours and was smelling very good. Then after 5 days I began to see a pale, cloudy film on the surface of the brine.

It still smells okay but i don't like having a mold that can grow at this pH and salinity.

For my second attempt, what else can I do to not have this happen again? Is 4% salt enough? Is slicing the peppers a bad idea?

PS the "warning" before I posted says there's a sticky for mold identification? There's no sticky that I can see.

Hertz switched car class on me after completed the complete check-in. Now they won't respond to my emails requesting credit for the downgrade

I rented a Hybrid SUV. Every indication i had told me the car would be waiting for me at the airport.

I have Hertz Gold and it was supposed to be a geton, drive away situation. They finally (after too much waiting) admitted they didn't have the car type I had reserved.

I had family waiting to be picked up at the terminal. I explained that i specifically wanted a hybrid because of the distance we needed to drive. The agent said they had a hybrid sedan and i said okay.

I was already late so just took it and assumed they'd adjust the cost (sedan was $150 less for the rental period).

Of course they just charged me the the SUV price and now i cannot get any response to a ticket i filed with them

Any suggestions on what to do or who to contact next?

Want a DWX Compact. Am nervous about DW's reputation for customer service. Will I regret it?

I have maybe been watching too many YouTube channels about Dan Wesson. But their customer service sounds borderline horrible.

I'm cool with DIY gunsmithing for anything that doesn't require a mill or a lathe.

Will I regret my decision should I buy a dwx compact?

Optimal way to keep lots of small devices charged while not damaging their batteries?

I'm wanting to devise a charging solution to a bunch of small rechargeable devices (several flashlights, a bike computer, a small rechargeable blower for electronics, etc) that i need to have at least at 75% whenever i reach for them.

I'm trying to figure out a good way to keep them charged but without damaging their batteries by leaving them on an always on, "dumb" charger.

Ideally there would be a solution that allowed for some battery cycling. Is there such a thing?

My DIY hack was going to be to put everything on good power strip and then us a smart plug to only energize the strip for a few hours a day. Not an ideal solution I know.

EDIT okay, AI says my DIY hack might not be that crazy after all. It recommended a Kasa power strip with plugs that can be individually configured for when and how long they're on/off. Worth a shot?

Clik valve maintenance while on the road--convert all equipment to Clik or just carry presta cores?

Need a sanity check here

I just installed Clik on my bikes and absolutely love their eases-of-use. Like, it's way nicer than I ever even imagined.

However, my on-board bike maintenance equipment (hand pumps and CO2 inflators) is all set up for Presta. Moreover, I have separate such kits for different of my bikes. I also realized that anytime I might need to borrow equipment it'll likely be Presta as well.

So am I crazy for just planning on making Step 1 of on-the-road tire maintenance a Clik to Presta valve core swap? Basically, using Clik for routine, administrative tire pressure top ups and reverting to Presta for real world "emergencies"

EDIT: okay. apparently Presta gear is mostly backwards compatible with Clik. This never occurred to me but makes perfect sense. I tested out a few of my Presta hand pumps and they all seem to work! I'm glad I got set straight. Thank you all (especially u/HG1998)

What's going on with my Edge 830"s screen?

Looks like the top layer is separating. If it spreads to the display it'll probably affect legibility.

Started a couple of months ago and has really accelerated.

Computer is 5 years old so probably no hope of any warranty repair I guess?

EDIT: Garmin customer support will not acknowledge a problem. Offered me a "reconditioned" 830 for $150. They will not guarantee that the issue won't appear again

They blamed the unit as simply being "old" (which seemed like a strange strategy to sell me on any future Garmin products)

Modern coating options for an aluminum grip frame and trigger guard?

I'm considering refinishing an Ruger Blackhawk and want to refinish the grip frame and trigger guard as well

My knee jerk solution would be black anodizing. But I'm wondering if there are other options i should consider?

Kitchen cabinets with 1/2" plywood back. Can I attach directly to studs?

Just want to confirm that 1/2" plywood will be thick enough to withstand the weight of a cabinet full of stuff.

These are over-counter cabinets. The cabinet will be screwed into two studs (through dry wall). I'm planning on using 4 lag screws (with washers): two at the top and two about midway down.

[meta] is anyone noticing an extreme uptick in low effort posts by hidden accounts?

Again this morning there are more vapid posts like "what's your favorite _____ movie" or "which of these ____ movies is the best"

Invariably the posting accounts' histories are hidden and a lot are relatively new.

So, probably bots fluffing up engagement for unknown purposes.

Then you see posts that are clearly from real people sharing real thoughts and they get almost no engagement. So you have to wonder: if those bot posts weren't here sucking up attention, would the real posts would get more real discussion?

I'm sure reddit has a rule against requiring posters to have open account histories but man, I would like to see that.

IMO Reddit really broke reddit when it allowed accounts to hide post histories. Basically an open invitation to bot-guided content (which may have been intentional for all i know)

/rant

Okay, bring on the bot replies

EDIT: here's an example. I just went and picked the first low effort post I saw

https://www.reddit.com/r/Letterboxd/comments/1u16wfu/whats_the_last_movie_you_rated_less_than_2_stars/?ref=share&ref_source=link

Of course the poster history is hidden. But if you search for the poster's actual history you can pretty easily see it's a bot:

Limited space. How accessible does my charge controller need to be?

Adding small solar setup to my garden shed (controller, battery, and inverter). There's not a ton of unused wall space (because it's all for tool storage). So am thinking of just mounting the charge controller down low in a corner; it'll be near the battery and near where the solar panel's cable comes through the wall.

Will I regret having to move a storage box every time i want to access it?

Context: first time solar project DIY-er here, so I have no idea how often I will be interacting with these pieces of equipment.

Thanks for your thoughts

Would like a plain black grill emblem replacement. Not a blacked out H but just nothing.

Is there such a thing?

Michelin starred restaurant served a dish consisting of shaved, raw porchini mushrooms and rice. Could this make some people sick?

Had a great meal on Saturday night, but vomited most of it back up about 10 hours later (after a very uncomfortable night of not sleeping).

Wife and I ate the exact same food (off of the same shared plates). She was fine.

Other than my stomach feeling more-and-more bloated over the ensuing 10 hours, I never really felt nauseated up until the final moments. And, once it came back up, that was basically it. No further symptoms.

My stomach is normally pretty robust to a wide variety of foods and have no food allergies I know of, so this was a strange thing for me. Could I have had some immune reaction the mushrooms?

Trying to figure out what happened (so I can avoid it next time lol).

EDIT: Doesn't sound like an allergic reaction. Just sounds like different people can react differently to the chitin. For me, looks like I just had a prolonged episode of ye old dyspepsia.
