Water Country Pro Tips

Hi friends. We have been to BGW many times but our family of 6 - 2 adults, 4 kids ages 3-11 - is visiting Water Country for the first time on Friday.

Tips? Thoughts? Do we b-line to Surfer's Bay and stake out some chairs for the day and work from there? All-day Dining worth it? Does the park thin out drastically during the final few hours? Should we prepare ourselves for a busy, potentially frustrating day? Can you take cell phones on slides if you have them in a waterproof lanyard? Just thinking about how to stay in communication with a spouse if we divide and conquer.

I'm slightly apprehensive about this experience given the complexities of managing a day at a water park compared to a theme park, but we're excited to have a day on the slides before school starts.

I welcome all advice!

I Want to Know Who Was Getting Married in the Portrait Gallery Tonight

Just curiosity, that's all. It was a big production and the guest list posted in the lobby was full of some known figures from now and the past. (I waved at Maury Povich - what an evening!)

No other reason. Just wondering who pulls off stuff like this. It was gorgeous. The whole museum smelled wonderful because of all the flowers they'd put out. Nice of the staff to still let us enjoy the place while workers were getting the wedding ready.

The Math Isn't Mathing

What am I missing here? The "sale" has Prestige at $20/month + an initial $20 fee. That would put it at $260 + I assume the roughly $10 processing fee and tax.

But just buying it on its own is $238.99 out the door, renewal or new.

Final Results of Jimmy Discography Voting

Hey Everybody,

I'm sorry I'm so late on this. Earlier in the year, I put out a bunch of polls to let you, the fanbase, rank various tracks across the band's discography. I meant to compile all of it into a final graphic, but I wound up starting a new job and life got busy.

Anyway! Here's the final result from all your voting 6 months ago. To no surprise, Clarity and Futures dominate on a lot of fronts, but there are sill some standouts. And look how even Best Title Track is across 5 records.

What really struck me is how dominant "A Praise Chorus" was for second track. I did not expect it in a world where "Lucky Denver Mint" exists, but I must be out of touch on the love for APC!

Poor Damage performed as one might expect Damage to perform. But when you are up against the entire body of work (minus the EPs - sorry "Disintegration" and "Roller Queen), someone has to come in last.

It was fun doing this with all of you. Thanks for your input.

Experiences with Water Country?

The family has been to BGW several times, but we've never been to Water Country. We've also been to Great Wolf Lodge and it was... fine. But we're debating some sort of water park visit.

A day at Water Country and a hotel is probably cheaper for us than a day at GWL because of our Platinum passes and guest tickets.

How would Water Country be on the weekend of Aug 13-14?

And for those who have experienced it and GWL, how do they compare? (I know the obvious one - GWL is contained, climate controlled, etc., and probably has more to do for littler kids. WC is larger, probably has more variety, has to deal with the elements, etc.)

Overall, I find GWL to be overpriced for what it is, but it's still fun for our kids. And our kids are tween and younger.

San Diego has atrocious ops

Haven't been here in years until today. Doubt I'll come back. BG Williamsburg does pretty ok but this place is simply terrible when it comes to rides.

I hate to be a complainer, but it's nuts. They have like 3 rafts cycling on Shipwreck Falls. This is supposed to be a capacity attraction.

And the app is hot garbage, with posted wait times that don't reflect reality at all - or even match the poster wait time outside the ride.

How are the crowds today?

Typical summer slam? A bit better? Worse?

I grew up out here but live elsewhere now, but I have a Six Flags Prestige pass and might have some time this afternoon to enjoy the park for a few hours.

Toy Story: The Case of Declining Multipliers?

It's interesting how box office shifts over time, especially with the prevalence of streaming and other options.

The Toy Story franchise is a juggernaut, no doubt whatsoever, but it's become increasingly frontloaded, which is also common to box office performance today compared to 1995.

And of course, Toy Story 5 is hardly done. But even if it finishes with $505M domestic, it'll still sit at around a 3.15 multiplier. For context, if it had Toy Story 3's legs, it'd finish at over $600M domestic.

A 3.15 multiplier is fantastic, regardless, and nothing to shake a stick at in today's marketplace.

Other Disney property comparisons:

  • MCU: 2.69
  • Pixar: 3.71
  • Disney Animation Overall: 6.39 (harder to measure given the history)
  • Disney Animation Since 1989: 5.77
  • Disney Live Action Remakes: 3.40
  • Disney-Era Star Wars: 2.94

But I do wonder why Pixar can't drum up as much repeat business for Toy Story as they used to, outside of people waiting for streaming. Only 3 years ago, Elemental managed to leg out the 3rd-highest multiplier in all of Pixar.

DRL Module Fried?

I've read this can be an issue in the Mk7 Jettas. I noticed this week my passenger side DRL is not producing as much light as the driver one. Headlights, turn signals, and high beams are all fine.

My battery is fine. I tried removing the housing that connects cables to the unit to make sure the connector wasn't shot, but I couldn't get it off.

Googling has led me to believe the DRL component got overheated and fried, which is a common flaw in the Jetta. But that's an internet search. I'd appreciate any feedback you have as owners.

It's a 2019 SEL Premium.

Pro Tips for an Out-of-Towner

Hi Friends,

I'm a Prestige passholder from Kings Dominion. I'll likely be in Chapel Hill for some work in early August and I thought it could be a good time to drive the 2 or so hours over to Charlotte to hit up Carowinds for the first time. I imagine I'd be visiting the park on a Tuesday or Wednesday.

Any pro tips here? Do you think I'd fill a full day or knock everything out, including multiple rides on the marquee attractions after only a few hours? I'm trying to figure out if I want to overnight in the Charlotte area or if I'd get enough done to still drive back to Northern Virginia the same day.

I know it's all down to personal preference. I've never been to Carowinds and I want to experience it in all its glory! But I also don't know how much there is to "explore" compared to simply trying to knock out some of the top-tier coasters and call it a day. I'm expecting a sister park to Kings Dominion in overall approach (but without an Eiffel Tower 😄 ).

Monarch just announced AI integration with external services.

It looks relatively complicated to set up based on the instructions. Wondering if anyone else has hooked Monarch up with Chat, Claude, Gemini, etc. You only get 5 data pulls per day on the regular plan.

Is the only value that it brings Monarch data into the larger AI ecosystem you already use? Monarch has its own AI bot that can answer plenty of questions.

Would I get the same functionality by downloading a .csv of my transactions and asking my AI tool to analyze it?

I Didn't Appreciate Onward As Much As I Should Have

Onward has been something of a joke in our family. We watched in in 2020 when it hit Disney+ after the world shut down, and my kids didn't like it much at the time. We've never touched it since, and it's usually come up in the form of a threat, "Calm down or I'll pick Onward for movie night!"

Now, six years ago, my oldest was five, my next oldest was two, and we were about to have our third. Now I have four goons I'm responsible for, and I figured I could give this flick another shot. After all, kids who complain about a cartoon are still more likely to sit and watch the cartoon than run away in protest.

I remember Onward being perfectly enjoyable, but I feel like it's all but forgotten, jettisoned to that weird realm as the movie that came out over the same weekend when everything started closing up around the world. We don't remember it as a straight-to-streaming Pixar feature like Soul or Turning Red (and maybe Luca, but I feel like that's another forgotten film). It just kinda showed up, got creamed at the box office by COVID, did better on streaming, but then disappeared from public consciousness.

I owe Onward an apology. I remember liking the little twists in the end upon first viewing - that Ian looks at his list of things he wants to do with his dad, initially dismayed that he'll do none of them, and then coming to the realization that he had an older brother to have those experience with, all while his "screw up" older brother never had any of them. It's really pretty dang poignant and made me tear up a bit on this viewing. It's a big turn for a character that wants nothing more than to see his dad, but he realizes his brother doesn't just want to see their dad, but needs to see him and have that experience. I'm a sucker for selflessly portrayed on screen, and I think the film nailed it.

It has its flaws like any movie, and you could argue Barley's character arc is almost undone by the coda, but I think Onward has a beautiful message that's easy to miss because it's rolled up in this intentionally goofy D&D-adjacent vibe.

I actually think Onward deserves a place in the upper tier of Pixar. It might not be in the pantheon of absolute classics, but it is, at worst, standing right outside the door.

Wait, Surviving Is Orange???

I picked up the special pressing with white vinyl, but I always thought surviving was more of a red. For over six years. Red. Apparently it is orange.

Co-Worker Selling an Old Samsung U8000 Series

I don't have high expectations for this model, but he's offering a 65" version for $100.

Samsung 65-inch Class Crystal UHD TU-8000 Series 4K UHD HDR Smart TV (UN65TU8000FXZA, 2020 Model).

Worth the plunge? I'm using a 14-year-old 47" 1080p Vizio paired with a 2017 Nvidia Shield. Admittedly, the picture quality on the Vizio has always been pretty good, especially with motion and without fake-looking smoothing, etc. I'd keep using the Shield on the Samsung.

I was looking at making my next TV purchase a Sony OLED, but if $100 is worth it to level up the Vizio, I might consider it. It costs me nothing (literally) to walk away and move on with life.

I haven't heard amazing things about this series, so I'm not ranking it against today's TVs. I'm ranking it against what I currently have.

Thanks for your thoughts!

The Mickey & Minnie's Runaway Railway building at Disneyland is enormous, and the ride itself is longer than its predecessor in Florida.

But I noticed windows around the east and north faces. Anyone have insights into what goes on there?
