Olympic Lifting After Spinal Fusion

NOT ASKING FOR MEDICAL ADVICE

I herniated a disk several months ago doing heavy deadlifts. Broke form and it was completely my fault. After trying to rehab it on my own, and attempting epidural steroids to improve it, I am still hurting all of the time, and a neuro-surgeon is recommending a PLIF. The only thing that concerns me about the surgery is that lifting is a huge part of my life, and I am afraid I won’t be able to get close to where I am at now, or that dynamic barbell movement will be restricted in general. Any lifters out there have a similar procedure and were able to return to lifting close to before? Surgeon is telling me I should be able to get to 90% but info online is so conflicting.

Need Comeback Stories from a Spinal Fusion

Hi all; been doing CrossFit a couple of years now and I love it; especially the lifting aspect. Ironically, I herniated a disk in my back doing a bad deadlift (being a dum dum), and now after months of it not getting any better, am having a PILF spinal fusion scheduled. I know it will be a long road to recovery and I am depressed already thinking about how I won't be able to go hard in the gym for a long time, which is really my therapy and thing I look forward to every afternoon. I am especially worried that even after I recover, I won't be able to lift heavy anymore. Granted, as an older athlete that has already injured myself, I have already decided not to attempt max deadlifts and squats out of caution, but it is really important to me that I am able to lift at least moderately heavy and continue to improve my clean and snatch maxes. Has anyone had a surgery like this and came back feeling and performing better than ever? Or did you have to permanently scale things back?

I didn't like DACI (MGT 8823)

I have one course remaining prior to graduation, and this is one of my least favorite courses. Mainly because of how grading was done in the class. I think the lectures are well done, but some of the assignments felt a little like busy work. The grading on the assignments is pretty lenient, but I didn't like that it is the same TA grading all of your assignments (including your project) throughout the class. I think this allows for bias from one TA to potentially effect your overall grade. The project is 50% of your grade, and they provide very little guidance around what specifically needs to be included in the project. The feedback they do provide on the project related items comes so late that it's practically too late to re-tool if needed. They allow you to submit your project in advance for TA feedback, but the feedback comes in around 2 days before the project itself is due. Despite incorporating the feedback into my submission, I still had a lot of point deductions in my project, and the TA comments don't say what specifically the deductions are for. With the project being half of your grade, they should be much more specific. I ended up doing well in the class overall, just sharing my experience for anyone else considering taking it.

Urinary Tract Irritation after Intercourse - Pelvic Floor Repair

I had pelvic floor repair surgery about 2 years ago. Generally, it has helped a lot with stress incontinence. I still have some issues with frequent urination, and recently have had some problems with repeat UTIs, which have never been an issue for me in the past. I am starting to see a correlation between having that additional irritation, and intercourse, which again was never a problem for me before the repair surgery. I haven't changed anything from a hygiene perspective. I am wondering if anyone else has had this issue. I have a follow up appointment with my uro-gyno to discuss but I am wondering if this is common.

My Experience with the Program

I wanted to share some of my thoughts on the program as someone who is almost finished (graduating in the Fall). My background is in Industrial Engineering. It was about 10 years after undergrad that I started, and was working in Manufacturing as an Engineer. I was interested for a few years before I actually started it. Wasn't sure about the value at first. I have always been interested in the data side of my job and analytics/stats in general, and was hoping it would open some doors for me. I am fortunate enough that my employer pays almost all of my tuition, so I figured I had nothing to lose.

I did a lot of research before I started and talked to some others who had graduated for their advice. I was concerned that I would 1) Not be able to get back in the academic game after being out of it so long and 2) Would not benefit OMSA after putting in a lot of hard work. I am here to say that I am glad I did it. Some of the courses were a bit of a grind, but I was able to fit my studies into my life with a career and young kids with minimal disruption. I didn't really put a lot of time into refreshing my math or coding and was able to pick it back up. I have been able to get a new role in analytics with my current employer while studying, and have been able to apply things I have learned immediately, which helped the concepts sink in.

Just wanted to put this out there for anyone who may be in the boat I was in 2 years ago. It may not be for everyone, but for me, OMSA has been well worth my time and moved my career in the direction I wanted.

Husband seems into feet - advice

My hubs and I have been together for about 20 years. In general, I would say he’s an ass man. We have a pretty good sexual relationship and have experimented with different stuff. Recently, he’s dropped some pretty heavy hints that he is into my feet. For example, sitting on the couch I will playfully rub my foot across his face and he’ll say things like “you don’t want to open that Pandora’s box”. I do want to explore it actually to see if it is something I am into, but I don’t really get it, so I don’t know how. What are some things I can try? He isn't the type to directly tell me what he wants so I am trying to figure it out.

Hot hot hot

Like many others, I am a member of a box that does not have air conditioning. We are in the South, and it’s hotter than hellfire. I do all of the obvious things to keep myself hydrated and as cool as I can. I hydrate throughout the day, and have a liquid iv before and after workouts. I dress as cool as I can. I am the type who sweats a lot and overheats easily and I can’t help but wonder if I am hurting myself sometimes. I am losing a good bit of time in WODs just trying to cool off for a second. It was so hot in the gym one day, we actually had a guy nearly pass out and had to be driven home. How are you all coping with the heat? Any pro tips that might help me out?

Repeat UTIs after pelvic floor repair and hysteroscopy

Had pelvic floor repair about 1.5 years ago. I am generally happy with my results, although I do have some problems with urine retention and urgency. Also had a hysteroscopy a couple of months ago to remove some polypoid tissue from my uterus. In the last several weeks, I am getting recurrent UTIs. I have very rarely had UTIs up until this point, and haven’t had any changes in hygiene practices, etc. Had a culture done that showed Group B Strep and E. Coli in my urine. Been back and forth between gyno and primary care and no one can give me an explanation for why this is happening. Not sure where to go from here. Has anyone else had this experience?

Low back popping after deadlift injury

Want to give a little background; I am in my early 40's and do CrossFit. I have occasionally had some issues with low back pain in the past, but it's always gone away after a little rest. A few months ago, was doing a bunch of heavy deadlifts and my form went out, heard 3 successive pops and felt some pain but nothing excruciating, no tingling, etc.

Afterwards, I had a dull ache in my low back and would pretty frequently feel a popping sensation especially when turning certain ways. Finally went to the ortho who did x-ray and MRI. MRI showed that I have arthritis in my L5, which they said is likely the source of my pain which was exasperated by deadlift straining my back. They had no explanation for the pops I heard when my injury happened. Have a steroid injection scheduled which I hope will give me some relief.... after 3 months I have a dull ache in my back almost always.

I am concerned that 1) the steroid shot is not going to be a permanent solution to resolve my pain, and 2) I still at times have the popping in my low back. The ortho assures me that this is nothing to be concerned about, but my back never popped like that before I got injured.

Not sure where to go from here..... second opinion maybe?

Bird Feeders

Hi all, I would love to have a bird feeder in my yard but have the obvious concern that killing them would then be like shooting fish in a barrel for my GSP. Any of you guys have a bird feeder that you have been able to set up in a safe location? Any advice?

My dog got fired from the kennel 😂

Never boarded my baby before (3 year old female) and we ended having to over the weekend. Boarded her at a place that trains dogs and also keeps other dogs. I was nervous since it was her first time obviously, but also she does get anxious at times at night when we stay away from home.

Long story short, when I picked her up they said she’s a sweet girl but because of her anxiety (mostly at night) they recommended that she stay with an in home sitter in the future. She had issues with settling down and was barking and trying to chew through her crate there (which she doesn’t do at home where she is familiar with surroundings).

Anyone else have experience with this? I am wondering how much of it is breed related and how much is that I haven’t trained her properly. Her typical day is running the yard and sleeping in her crate at night, and staying in her crate when we are out or at work.

MGT 8823 DACI Projects Clarification

For anyone who has taken MGT 8823 (Data Analysis for Continuous Improvement) can you shed any light on the expectations for the project? The syllabus has very scant information about what will be required. Makes it really tough to choose a project topic. Multiple students are asking TAs for clarification in Ed discussion and we aren't really getting an answer, so any insight that can be given would be super helpful.

Friend's kid is awful; not sure what to do

We have some family friends who are good people, and who we enjoy being around. We have some differences in our parenting styles, but that has not effected our friendship up until this point. However, the more that we are around their family unit, we are seeing that one of their children has severe behavior problems. By that I mean lashing out, screaming, directly ignoring instructions and saying 'no' to commands.

Our friends have somewhat acknowledged the child's issues in passing statements, but are not addressing the child's behavior in the way that we would as parents. It puts us in a weird situation because we want to continue to grow our family friendship, but their child's behavior is becoming a deterrent.

We don't allow their child to disrespect us, but since we are not the parents, we feel limited in how we can help address the kid's behavior. Anyone else successfully navigate a situation like this?

Spider bites? Georgia

Apologies, I know the picture isn’t the best. I keep getting 1-2 bites a night in bed. All on my arms and hands. I am the only one getting bitten. Every time, it is two marks the same distance apart, which makes me wonder if they are spider bites. They are super itchy.

Spring ISyE 6644 Final Grades

Anyone have any insight on the curve that was applied to final grades in 6644 this Spring? I ended the class with a straight B and was kind of expecting a curve to an A based on previous semesters and some of the issues with the final and canvas. I had my final done before the outage and it seems like some students got to retake the final after seeing it already due to when the outage occurred, so I am feeling a little slighted...

Been doing CrossFit a couple years at the same gym now and have made a lot of gains and am generally happy with my progress. The programming at my gym tends to be more upper body focus, and thus my arms/lats,etc. have gotten bigger and stronger, and while my legs are stronger too, my body is starting to be a little disproportional. For context, I am a 130 lb. female. Looking for advice on how I can supplement to get my legs to catch up. I have some lower back issues so I can’t go super heavy for now.

We have a 3 year old GSP and she has NEVER peed in the house. Then suddenly yesterday she peed on the floor in our bedroom. Of course this has me worried. Has anyone else had this happen? Wondering if I need to take her to the vet.
