Hi I’m new resident. I live in Ward 2. Looking for some insights on these mayor and councillor candidates. Who would be a good mayor? Our current one is not running I think. And for councillors, do they make a huge difference? What do people care about here?
I’m in an extreme rut right now. I am 48f. I was very disciplined, motivated and kept up with daily exercise and tracking my eating for awhile. I couldn’t lose weight but had been able to transform my body turning fat into muscle. Then I got sick with back to back stomach flu and worst flu or covid which together lasted 5 weeks.
I’ve completely atrophied and lost my strength. The flu really hit my lungs hard and my cardio now is non existed. It’s been a few weeks since my flu went away but I’m still soo tired.
I’m in such a rut I have gained 10 more lbs, of fat and everything is off. I feel I’ve aged so much. My hair my skin etc everything has gone to shit.
I feel so unmotivated but know I really need to turn this around and get back on track
Im in a role that pays very well but is lower manager level with limited advancement until my manager retires which is in another 5 years at least. It’s public sector and I have been looking for other higher title jobs. However I’m realizing I’m over paid for my title and I have to go two levels up elsewhere just to make higher salary.
I feel like I should be happy where I am and just wait for her to retire but it would mean limited growth in title though I feel like we do the same things.
But if I stay here too long it would give impression of limited growth. I’m about 7-10 yrs from retirement

I work in a public sector municipal dept where a junior staffer barely out of school who reported to me was appointed as acting manager of an adjacent team. The decision to appoint her was openly communicated that it was politically driven due to her relationships with councillors.
This was 3 level position jump. The previous manager was fired for a lot of issues including backlash from staff after years of micromanaging, toxic behaviour.
This new acting manager is disappointedly adopting many of the traits of the previous manager and she is now going to be formally appointed the role with lack of fair transparency in the hiring of the position. They “posted” it with only 1 week over holidays when staff wouldn’t see the job being posted.
Her staff are complaining to me about her. You may think I’m bitter about not getting the role. However that position is a parallel team that is operations based I have no interest in nor reflective of my area of work
I feel like I should care but sadly I just can’t.
This organization is known to promote people without lack of experience just for them to have “yes people” who will do the politicians bidding. I feel quite at a loss know as I hoped to be moving up in the org but realizing that being a competent experienced person won’t get me any higher.
The current director who appointed this young staffer also is inexperienced. She herself was appointed by her boss. And that boss was appointed as well due to politics and not experience. This is the culture here.
I feel I should leave. However I’m in lower management role but paid very high here for what I do. Going elsewhere for a higher role is a paycut of about 10-15 percent.
Im about 7 years away from retirement. If I stay I just have to turn a blind eye and not care and witness the next train wreck about to happen.

Based on the municipal elections candidates list, it’s pretty much just the same names and no challengers with the exception of Ward 1.

So if nobody runs against the mayor or councillors, there is no actual need to campaign right?
So why would people bother to vote if there is only one choice?
And I suppose we would be spared of the littering of election signs and they won’t even need to make an effort with pointless propaganda of false promises.
I’m a manager working in a municipal public works organization focusing on transportation projects. Without getting into too much details our Mayor is pretty much forcing staff to direct external funding to a suspicious unknown vendor through a third party contract.
It’s unethical (and illegal). Without this huge sum of money, our operations are cut off at the knees .
This is the last straw for me in a long line of “decisions” he’s made.
I’m 6 years away from pension eligibility. Market is shit. Limited other municipal options but I feel compelled to go.
This can be a big scandal down the road and I don’t want my name and reputation to be involved at all with this.
As staff it’s so disheartening we are just here to do the bidding of politicians. We are not allowed to question them.
I feel like I’m ready to throw jn the towel. Not how I want to spend my last years before retirement.
Edit: the awarding or administration of said suspicious contract is not my responsibility however dealing with the affects of the removal of those funds are in my domain as I have to operationally now figure out how to run our division with a few less $$$. This affects our services delivery, staff and ability to meet public demands.
And wish there could be opposition but I’m in a setting where the mayor has absolute power including power to execute agreements during a certain “time period.”
Seriously … voters only cared to get rid of the “libs” during the last provincial election, not understanding federal and provincial politics and policies. Now we are stuck with him until 2029? Is there no way to remove Ford? The corruption is staggering.
Municipal elections are coming up and he is stacking regional chairs with his corrupt buddies and got his favourite mayors in his back pocket lining their pockets and awarding fraudulent contracts.
I’m mid-management in municipal public sector (Canadian OMERS). I’m at the point where bailing at earliest eligibility (6 years out) with a reduced pension is looking way more appealing than grinding another 7 years for the unreduced mid-tier number, let alone 13+ years for max.
The numbers: mortgage + HELOC will be fully paid off in 3 years, so I’d have 3 debt-free years before retiring to aggressively dump into TFSA. Combined RRSP between my spouse and I is around $700K, growing.
We’re planning to sell and downsize at retirement, which frees up more capital. I wouldn’t fully stop working, I’d shift into private consulting, so there’d be income after I retire from public sector just not a paycheque-and-pension combo.
Our household income now is $350k.my spouse is about 5 years behind me on a DC pension (not DB), so he’d still be working while I’m consulting. I’m well known in the industry and have prior consulting experience, so jumping back even part time in I can easily get about $50k revenue per year
For anyone who left a DB pension at first eligibility instead of waiting for the max (or even the unreduced minimum): any regrets, or was the freedom worth it?
To me this looks like a good diversified retirement income stream. Wanted to see how common this may be by others in similar situation.
We would be selling our home and downsizing into a condo and travelling a few months each year, mainly Asia.
