Doja just completely changed my perspective on music

I used to think that a crazy technical flow could carry a rap song, or an incredibly detailed bass could carry an EDM track but really it just doesn’t work like that.

I was just scrolling through insta and I see a clip of Doja performing Streets and I was actually completely just blown away. Every aspect of the song, aesthetic and performance blended so perfectly. The flow isn’t super technical but it’s so dialled in and well done. The lyrics are so well written, they get the point across and keep to the story and theme of the song. Her delivery is 10/10 and it compliments the beat and lyrics perfectly. Her look and the whole aesthetic of the performance fit the song completely and all in all it just ties the whole thing together perfectly. I’m not even a big listener of her or to be honest Rap or Rnb in general but the whole execution of this performance really just made my mind click as to what makes a real artist so good. It makes me think of how someone like Eminem doesn’t hit for me anymore and it’s because the focus is on making 1 or 2 aspects insane instead of just flowing and making the whole project blend and work off of each peace.

So yeah I’m definitely an outsider to this Reddit page but I literally just got a musical paradigm shift and I wanted to tell someone so I chose the Reddit of the artist that caused it. Doja is brilliant and I will be listening to more of her stuff.

Wait until ur Pro to upload or treat it as a journey?

I’m debating on releasing my first track. It’s not crazy, it’s a 1 minute 24 second Tearout/Dubstep track that I look at as more of a Snippet or start of a discography rather then a be all and end all full on release but this is where I’m stuck.

I’m only 7 months in but I think I’ve got all the basics down and I can make a listenable track for the amount of time I’ve been going but although I like it and it’s probably the best mix down I’ve done since I started, there are clear signs that I’m not a pro. There’s a lack of variation in the track and apart from the main bass and little response fills not much is really going on. Whereas if I compare it to a pro track there’s much more going on and it’s busier.

So would you guys in an early position say “it’s not good by pro standards but I like it and it’s good for my level” and upload it to SoundCloud or would you wait until your tracks can sit next to an artist you look up to? Long post but any opinion is appreciated.

I’m about 7 months into learning production I’d say I’m okay at making a basic mediocre track. I keep going through again and cleaning little bits up but what I can’t figure out is why my kick and sub are so prominent. When I listen to my reference track which is a Svdden death track his sub and kick are so subtle where as mine almost drown the mix out when I listen on my portable speaker

I’ve been saving and researching for a while about getting a controller or decks and a mixer. At the moment I’m most inclined on getting an XZ due to it being everything you could need and being pretty close to club standard but I do often see the 1000mk2s and I wonder how good of a setup they are today seeing as they are pretty old now. Would anyone recommend them over a controller like an XZ or RX3 or would you say stick to the Controllers unless you got for a CDJ setup?
