A super kind lady on FB Marketplace gifted me a free Bamboo, Monstera, and two Pink Princess cuttings! Need advice on rescuing/planting them...

Hey everyone!

A sweet person on FB Marketplace gave me a huge haul of free plants today: a bamboo, a monstera cutting, and two Pink Princess Philodendron (PPP) cuttings! I'm super excited, but a few of them need some TLC and I want to make sure I plant them correctly.

Could use some expert advice on a few things:

1. The Bamboo:

It’s flopping over and clearly needs to be repotted into a sturdier setup.

Should I pull off the yellowish/white leaves on it?

Is the main stem supposed to be turning yellow, or is that a bad sign/rot? What’s the best way to handle it?

2. The Monstera Cutting:

Should I trim off the damaged leaf, or leave it alone for now?

Does this cutting need to be rooted in water first, or is it ready to go straight into soil?

3. The Two Pink Princess Cuttings (PPP):

I already own a PPP in a nursery pot, but I've never planted fresh cuttings before and have no clue how to plant these two!

Should I pull off the yellowing leaves on the cuttings?

What is the best method/setup to plant or root them so they survive?

I attached photos of all three so you can see their condition and roots. Any tips on saving the bamboo or planting the cuttings would be amazing! Thanks in advance!

Plants have no light as I just got them and are currently laying on the floor as in the picture 😭

23rd birthday req

Hey everyone. I honestly debated posting this because I feel a little awkward asking, but today is my 23rd birthday and things have been pretty rough lately. I’m currently deep into grad school, completely unemployed, and living on a budget that leaves zero room for extras. To top it all off, I lost my sweet baby cat a few months ago, and the house has felt so empty ever since. I see all the amazing posts on here and wondered if there is anyone out there with some spare yarn and time who might be willing to do something kind. I know custom pet replicas usually cost a lot, which I completely respect and understand since it takes so much skill and labor! But I figured it doesn't hurt to ask if any generous soul might want to practice their pet replicas or happen to have an extra little mini crochet lying around that they wouldn't mind mailing to a lonely student. Because I have zero money right now, I unfortunately can't cover shipping costs, but I would be endlessly grateful if anyone was in a position to gift even just a tiny emotional support potato or a little bumblebee. It would genuinely make my entire month.

New to bamboo! Planted my mom’s mystery work gift & now I have questions 🌿

Hi everyone!

My mom’s job recently gave her a gift of a small pot with bamboo seeds in a white packet. There was no label as to the specific brand of seeds or where it came from—just a box with a pot featuring her company logo and "bamboo seeds" on the box.

My mom doesn’t like to care for plants, and I’ve always wanted to grow something on my own. I’m not usually the person to go out and do heavy research—I honestly just planted it, and to my surprise, it’s actually starting to grow! Now I have a few questions because searching Google has been super confusing.

I’m pretty sure she’s healthy overall! I’ll be adding photos in the comments, but I wanted to ask:

Does the stem get thicker on its own over time (We have a gifted adult? bamboo with thick stems somewhere in this house)? Or is the initial width pretty much what it stays at?

Am I supposed to be doing anything specific right now in terms of care, pruning, or feeding?

Is clipping the stem upright a good idea? At first she was drooping, so I added a little support clip. Now she’s able to stand up much better on her own, but I still left the clip on just in case. Should I remove it or keep supporting it?

Any advice for a complete beginner would be so appreciated! Thanks in advance!

NYSTCE Multi-Subject CST (222)

Hey everyone! I’m currently freaking out getting ready to take the NYSTCE Multi-Subject CST (222) math section, and the stress is definitely hitting hard. 😭For anyone who has already taken and passed it, I would be so grateful for your insight/advice!

Formulas & Terms: Were there any specific formulas, math concepts, or terms that were NOT provided on the official reference sheet, but came up on the exam? What do you wish you had memorized beforehand? Calculator tricks ?

Question Wording & Phrasing: Did you run into any weirdly phrased or confusing word problems? How did you approach decoding what they were actually asking for?

Time Management & Strategy: Any general tips for pacing or managing test-day anxiety for this specific module?

AITAH for refusing to take a family friend’s cat right after my 20-year-old cat passed away

I’m struggling with a mix of deep grief and overwhelming frustration right now, and I really need some outside perspective. My cat recently passed away at around 19–20 years old. I had her for 5 years, and she meant the world to me. For context, I’m normally terrified of animals, so she was my first and only pet. Building that bond with her was so special to me, and losing her has been incredibly hard. Instead of being given space to process this loss, my family is being hounded. Almost immediately after my cat passed, a family friend started calling my mom and grandma, pushing us to take her cat. She’s owned this cat for 7 years, but all of a sudden, now that I no longer have a cat, they’re constantly trying to offload her pet onto us (saying they are unable to take care of her , can’t afford to buy him food/litter..) Whenever my mom talks to this friend, their family immediately launches into a guilt trip. They keep saying that if they can’t find a home for the cat, they’re going to drop it off at a shelter. To make matters worse, my mom and grandma keep bringing this up to me—we’ve had this exact same conversation 5 times already—asking me what I want to do. It feels completely insensitive. I am actively grieving a companion who meant everything to me, yet I'm being put on the spot to make a decision while being emotionally blackmailed with a threat about a shelter. Pets aren't interchangeable replacements, and I have zero connection to their cat. Down the line, when I’ve had time to heal, I’d love to rescue another stray on my own terms. But right now, I am simply not ready, and it feels wrong that they are using my loss as an easy opportunity to rehome a pet they've had for nearly a decade.

Am I wrong or out of line for being frustrated, refusing to take this cat, and being upset with my family for not protecting my boundary and shutting this down?

edit : it has been less than a month that my cat has passed

how to raise my karma ?

I’ve been on here for over two years now and i have under 200 karma points . I’m not even sure how I actually acquired these points to begin with. However, whenever I try to make posts in most communities it keeps telling me I need to have “at least 500 “ then deletes my post. how does one even obtain this ? I’m so confused because if my posts were posted , I would be able to gain my karma points i think . I feel like i’m already on reddit so much not sure what i’m doing wrong .

Custom plush of my late cat

Hi everyone,

I recently lost my sweet cat, Stacy, and I’m really hoping to get a custom crochet plush made of her so I can keep a part of her with me. I’ve looked around on Etsy, but to be completely honest, a lot of the custom ones I saw looked a little... scary and didn't really capture a soft, cute look. I’m hoping to find an artist who can do something sweet and cozy.

I am a college student, so my budget is on the lower side and quite tight. Because of this, I am absolutely not expecting a massive, hyper-realistic replica! I would be incredibly happy with a smaller version that just matches her colors and vibe. There is absolutely no rush on the timeline—I'm happy to wait as long as you need. I added some references (I know very different, because im indecisive) of some ideas I was looking at .

Please let me know if this is something you’d be interested in taking on, and we can discuss pricing and details. Thank you so much in advance. ❤️

Senior Cat

I’m writing this through tears and I really need some advice or guidance. Five years ago during COVID, an older stray cat ran into my house to escape the snow. I took her in, and she’s been my only pet and my absolute world ever since (I am terrified of all animals, so this is really big) The vet estimates she is somewhere between 17 and 20 years old now.
The past two days, New York has been hit with really hot weather, and she stopped eating. Yesterday, she had a seizure. I saw blood and completely panicked, rushing her straight to the vet. To be honest, I don't know a lot about cat medicine, vets , cats in general —I just know how to give her food, love, water, and keep her safe from toxins (google). At the clinic, the vet did a physical exam. They told me her heartbeat didn't sound right, she’s gotten very skinny, they felt a mass in her abdomen and she has multiple underlying conditions—including complete blindness, which wasn't fully there before the seizure (she could still see a bit before). They told me that doing X-rays and bloodwork "didn't really make sense" because, given her age and condition, there isn't much they can do for her anyway. They gave me Gabapentin just to keep her comfortable.
Because she is suffering, I asked the vet if we could put her down. They refused, telling me that without running the $800 bloodwork and X-ray panels first, they legally or ethically cannot perform euthanasia.
I don't have $800. I am a full-time college student and currently unemployed. This morning, she took a massive step back. She is barely moving, won't eat or drink, and isn't meowing at all. It was my first quiet morning in 5 years and the reality of losing her just hit me so hard. I can't afford the tests just to be told what we already know—that she is actively passing away. But I also cannot stand to watch her suffer.

Is it normal for a vet to refuse euthanasia without expensive diagnostic tests when a cat is clearly at the end of her life?

Are there low-cost clinics, human societies, or charities in the NYC area that can help with affordable end-of-life care or compassionate euthanasia?

How can I keep her as comfortable as possible right now with the Gabapentin?

Please help me, I am so lost ..

Senior kitty

Hey everyone, looking for some insight or advice. I’m currently dealing with a really confusing situation with my cat and I’m incredibly stressed out. For background: According to the vet, she is around 20 years old. She has been an outdoor street cat her entire life, but with the weather in NYC getting so insanely hot lately, she seemed really weak, so I brought her inside to stay with me full-time. A bit of context about me: I have been absolutely terrified of every single animal my entire life. I am still completely afraid of cats—except for her. She is the only exception. She is the sweetest soul, never bites, and never scratches. Because of my lifelong phobia, I know absolutely nothing about cat health or behavior. She has always been an extremely picky eater. I’m used to having to switch her cat food brands and flavors literally every week because she will just refuse to eat the same thing after a few days. But now, it’s gotten worse. She is completely refusing absolutely every cat food I try. I’ve even tried watering down her wet food to make it easier to lap up, and she won’t touch it. Here is the part that confuses me: she clearly still has an appetite. If I walk into the room with a plate of my own food, she will literally run over to snatch it. She will also happily eat her cat treats. It's just her actual cat food she is striking against. I don't have the money for a vet visit right now. Given that she’s 20, I’m wondering if this is just what happens when they get very old, but the mixed signals of her refusing her bowl while begging for my plate are throwing me off.
Has anyone dealt with an incredibly elderly cat doing this? Is it the heat, or is there a trick to getting her to eat regular food again? I have also heard of getting pet medicine from places like petco , if anyone has any alternative suggestions please let me know !
