I had been friends with this girl, “Indy,” for a while, and looking back, I ignored a lot of red flags because I cared about her.

She could be extremely manipulative with me. She would get upset over really small things, make me feel like I had done something terrible when I hadn’t, and would sometimes use money as leverage. If she had helped me financially or paid for something, she would later bring it up during arguments or make me feel like I owed her for it. It became exhausting because I never knew what tiny thing would suddenly make her angry.

While she was dating her boyfriend, “Jett,” she constantly complained about him to me.
She called him clingy, immature and apparently had plenty of negative things to say about his appearance, hygiene, finances and personality. She also told me multiple times that she was thinking about breaking up with him, talking to other people, or liking someone else.
At the same time, she was still with him. There were also times when she talked to me about another guy she was interested in. Whenever I asked who it was or what was happening, she wouldn’t give me a straight answer and would tell me to keep it anonymous.
Then she eventually broke up with Jett.

After the breakup, she started telling people her version of the relationship. One of the things she told me was that Jett had cheated on her. She showed me messages between them and used those conversations as evidence that he had supposedly been the problem.
The problem was that I knew things about the relationship that didn’t line up with the story she was telling everyone.
So eventually, I decided Jett deserved to hear what I actually knew.

I messaged him and asked if he was Jett. I told him that Indy had been going around talking about their breakup and explained what she’d told me.
I told him she had described him as clingy and emotionally immature, and that she had shown me messages from their relationship. I also told him that she had repeatedly talked to me about breaking up with him, being interested in other people and potentially talking to someone else while they were together.
Jett responded.

He admitted that he had been clingy at times and that he struggled to communicate his emotions, but he strongly denied ever cheating on her. He said he had genuinely loved her and had tried hard to make the relationship work. He also told me that she had tried to break up with him more than once, but that he had tried to keep the relationship together.

Then he asked me the question I knew was coming:

I didn’t actually know enough to give him a definite answer.

Indy had talked about another guy, but whenever I pushed for details, she refused to tell me. I told Jett exactly that instead of pretending I knew something I didn’t.
He also told me that two mutual friends had contacted him after the breakup and told him what Indy had said about him. Apparently, they hadn’t been taking her side in the way she claimed they had.
The conversation got more complicated when Jett asked about some of the things she’d said about him personally.
I told him that she had called him poor and had made comments about his hygiene and teeth. I also told him that she’d frequently complained to me about him not having a job.

Jett basically responded that yes, he was struggling financially, but that he’d spent a significant amount of money on her during their relationship.
He also said some things about her behaviour that I hadn’t known. At that point, I started realizing just how different the two versions of the relationship were.
Indy had portrayed herself to me as someone who was constantly being mistreated by an immature boyfriend.
Jett was describing a relationship where he had felt manipulated, criticized and repeatedly threatened with a breakup while trying to keep things together.
And honestly, knowing Indy, I could believe that both of them had been hurt—but I couldn’t ignore the things she’d personally told me.

There was another part that really bothered me.
Indy had previously talked to me about wanting to take their relationship further physically, then would change her mind or say she wasn’t ready. She had even asked me for help getting birth control because she was considering becoming sexually active with him. I never told Jett those things to embarrass her; I brought them up because she had used the situation as part of her complaints about him afterward. Jett’s reaction made it pretty clear that he had genuinely been confused by some of what had happened.
Eventually, he asked me if the other guy she’d mentioned was “Oscar.”

I told him there was a different guy she had never given me details about. And that was basically the moment I realized how much information I’d been carrying around without realizing it. I don’t think Jett was perfect. He admitted himself that he could be clingy and that he struggled with communicating his emotions. But I also don’t think someone being imperfect gives their partner the right to manipulate them, constantly criticize them, use money against them, or tell completely different versions of the relationship to different people.
Looking back, I also feel guilty for not saying something sooner.

I was scared Indy would turn on me, and considering how she’d treated me over relatively small things, I had a pretty good reason to be scared of losing the friendship.
But eventually I realized that keeping quiet was also allowing her version of events to become the only version people heard. I don’t know exactly what happened between Indy and Jett in every single part of their relationship, and I’m not claiming I do. I just know what she personally told me, what she showed me, and what she told other people—and a lot of it didn’t match the story she was telling after the breakup.

**TL;DR:** My former friend constantly complained about her boyfriend to me, criticized him, used money to control me, and told me she was interested in other people while they were together. After they broke up, she told people he had cheated and portrayed herself as the victim. I eventually contacted him and told him what she’d actually been saying to me. He denied cheating and explained that their relationship had been much more complicated than the story she’d been telling. I don’t know every detail, but I do know her stories didn’t consistently line up with what she’d told me

every time i would hang out with her and Jett and i had a conversation with him about our mutual interests she would get upset and start an hour long argument with us about how were trying to have an affair

My great aunt (my grandma’s sister) is married to my great uncle we will call Bob. My great aunt (Barbra) and Bob have 2 daughters who we will call Sienna and Lola. Barbra’s mother (my great grandmother) is still alive and thriving at the age of 95. Me, my nan, uncle (nan’s son) and my great nan go down to this island (you will probably know if you’re from Melbourne) and spend most of our time there. My nan and Barbra own a caravan on said island. Barbra and Bob USED to look after great grandma. However due to horrible treatment by Barbra and Bob (not feeding her, ignoring her, ect). She was put into a nursing home by my nan. Barbra and Bob were furious! They eventually moved to an apartment in the city and expected my great nan and my nan to sell their house

Now.. for the drama!
I went down to the island for new years and with my uncle being a messy drunk he decided to still the beans about the drama between Barbra, bob, nan, great nan and even Sienna and Lola.

My uncle said “remember how Bob never showed up to family gatherings for a couple years?” I said “yeah? He was always working. Why?” He looked at me like i was a poor kid who stumbled into a place they shouldn’t have. I was so confused and then when i asked him some more he eventually cracked. He then mentioned how Barbra and Bob won’t come down to the island if nan or great nan are there. I was even more confused.

He then got even drunker and told me about how about 8 years ago, Bob claimed he had gotten cancer. My uncle (my dad and uncle’s brother) sadly got blood cancer and died in 2010 a few months before my sister was born. Obviously we all knew what we were doing and we all rallied around Bob.

He claimed that he immediately started chemotherapy.. but something was off.. he never lost weight, never lost his hair, never looked sick. Nothing, not how a person would look if they did actually go through chemotherapy.

Everyone thought this was strange but something people don’t actually look like they’re going through chemotherapy so we all just assumed maybe he was going through an easier set of chemo? How wrong we all were.

My uncle eventually caved after lots and lots of begging he told me that Bob actually was having an AFFAIR FOR 8 YEARS!! He claimed he had chemo so he could go see his mistress!!!

When everyone obviously told Barbra to leave bob she got furious. You would have thought that she ripped hell apart and she decided to unleash all the rage and demons it holds. She cut everyone off. Me, my sister, her sister, her own 95 year old mother. Everyone BUT BOB!!

She wont visit Lola or Sienna who both recently had kids. Bob is still seeing his side family (he has 3 kids with his side piece) and is still married to Barbra.
